A battery charging system is provided which is comprised of a battery pack (30) and a charging system (20). The battery pack (30) includes a battery (10) and a battery capacity detect circuit (32). The battery capacity detect circuit (32) is interfaced with the charging system (20) through a single line to output a CHG-Bar signal. The battery capacity detect circuit (32) is operable to perform numerous monitoring operations on the battery by detecting the charge input to the battery and detecting charge taken away from the battery in a discharge operation. This operation is performed independent of the charging operation by the charging system (20). However, the charging operation of the charger (22) can be affected with the CHG-Bar signal.

Battery pack with monitoring function utilizing association with a

A battery charge/discharge monitor circuit (10) is operable to be disposed in a battery pack (12) which can be connected to a battery (13). The monitor circuit (10) is operable to be connected to an external CPU (24) or similar system through a single wire communication port (22) for transferring information back and forth. There is also provided an external signal on a line (30) for indicating charge or discharge activity in the monitor circuit (10). The monitor circuit (10) is operable to collect information regarding the amount of charge input to the battery and the length of time that the charge is input to the battery and also the amount of charge that is removed from the battery and the length of time that the charge is removed. This information is stored in a memory block (62) for later access by the external CPU (24). This system also provides offset information to provide some type of compensation for non-linearities of the part. This offset is determined during a calibration operation which operates over a long period of time during a period of inactivity. Regulation circuitry is operable to provide internal regulation to the circuitry with an external JFET (20).

Battery monitoring circuit with storage of charge and discharge

A temperature compensated current source for driving a multi-vibrator (19) includes a voltage generator (10) that outputs a voltage that is proportional to absolute temperature (PTAT) and a resistor (12) for setting the current output by the voltage generator (10). The temperature coefficient of the resistor (12) is chosen such that any variations in the current supplied by the voltage generator (10) are compensated for to result in a current that has substantially no temperature variation. This current is mirrored to a current source (18) for driving the multi-vibrator (19). The voltage across the resistor (12) is a function of temperature, with the current being a function of the value of the resistor (12). The temperature coefficient of the resistor (12) is substantially equal to the temperature coefficient of the voltage generator (10) to yield a temperature coefficient of substantially 0 ppm/.degree. C. for the current.

Temperature compensated bias generator

An integrated circuit with programmable output drive/program pins includes a plurality of output pads (30) which are each operable to interface with a separate and dedicated output driver (38). The output driver (38) is operable to drive an LED output device (14) in an operating mode. In a program mode, the driver (38) is disabled and a program buffer (40) enabled. At the same time, the LED output device (14) is disabled such that no impedance is presented to the output pad (30) due to operation of the LED output device (14). A programming resistor (18) is disposed between the pad (30) and one of three program reference voltages. A first program state is represented when the resistor (18) is tied to ground, a second program state is represented when the resistor (18) is tied to an open circuit and a third program state is represented when the resistor (18) is tied to a positive voltage. The program buffer (40) senses the presence of the resistor and what voltage it is tied to by either sinking current to the pad (30) or sourcing current therefrom. Therefore, the resistor (18) can be disposed on the pad (30) during operation and a power on reset or any type of external reset controlling a CPU (46) to initiate the program operation.

Programmable output device with integrated circuit

A temperature compensated current source for driving a multi-vibrator (19) includes a voltage generator (10) that outputs a voltage that is proportional to absolute temperature (PTAT) and a resistor (12) for setting the current output by the voltage generator (10). Temperature compensated current source operable to drive a current

A battery detect circuit (32) is provided that is operable to dispose a sense resistor (50) in series with the battery to determine whether the charge is being provided to the battery or being extracted from the battery. The voltage across the sensor resistor (50) is sensed by a voltage/frequency converter (52). The voltage/frequency converter (52) is a differential structure comprised of two integrator structures (102) and (104) that are operable to utilize a switched capacitor configuration to drive comparators on the output thereof. Each of the integrator structures (102) and (104) has associated therewith passive elements and active elements. The integrators (102) and (104) have associated therewith integration capacitors (147) and (149). Additionally, there are two operational amplifiers (143) and (145) that provide the active components of each of the integrators (102) and (104). The various switched capacitor circuits (161) and (163) associated with the amplifiers (143) and (145) are provided to provide the integration operation. Both the amplifiers (143) and (145) and their associated switched capacitor circuits (161) and (163) are dynamically balanced such that they are switched between integrator (102) and integrator (104) on a periodic basis. This therefore allows the errors between the active and passive elements to be switched between the two integrators (102) and (104) such that no accumulative error occurs.

Dynamically balanced fully differential circuit for use with a battery

A battery detect circuit (32) is connected to a battery, with the current A battery V:the battery and the current extracted from the battery measured with a sense resistor (50) and convened to charge and discharge voltages with a V/F converter (52). A microcontroller (64) is operable to increment a nominal available charge (NAC) register (180) during a charge operation and to increment a discharge rate counter (DCR) (184) during a discharge operation. The NAC register (180) indicates the available charge, i.e. the charge state of the battery, which value is output to a display (34). The display (34) is controlled to operate in either an absolute full mode or a relative full mode. This is determined by an external programming pin which has first and second programming states associated with the two modes. In the absolute full mode, a Programmed Full Count (PFC) determines the upper capacity value of the display (34), which PFC is predetermined and represents the maximum capacity of the battery when the battery is new. The charge state value displayed is then determined relative to the maximum capacity value. In the relative full mode, the actual capacity of the battery is determined and defines the upper capacity value of the display (34). A translation device (186) is operable to vary the output of the NAC register (180) as a function of temperature, this changed in discrete steps.

Display system for a battery monitoring circuit

A battery detect circuit (32) is connected to the battery with the current input to the battery and extracted from the battery measured with a sense resistor (50) and then converted to charge and discharge pulses with a V/F converter (52). A microcontroller (64) is operable to increment a Nominal Available Charge (NAC) register (180) during a charge operation, and to increment a Discharge Count Register (DCR) (184) during a discharge operation. The NAC register (180) indicates the available charge, which value is output to a display (34). The maximum value to which the NAC value can rise is limited by a value stored in the last measured discharge register (182). This value represents the value stored in the DCR (184) whenever the battery is discharged from an apparent full state to a fully discharged state. This results in a qualified transfer to the LMD register (182) such that no knowledge of the actual battery charge is necessary. The charge rate is varied as both a function of temperature, voltage and also of the state of charge. A fast charge rate is initiated when the charge state is above a predetermined low voltage threshold and less than full. When the charge state reaches a level within approximately 80% of full charge, the charge rate is reduced. At full capacity, the charge rate is further reduced to a top off charge rate which continues for approximately two hours. If the temperature falls below a predetermined low temperature threshold, the charge rate is again reduced to a safe, slow, effective rate. Trickle charge is provided to replenish charge adaptively in accordance with a self-discharge counter. The trickle charge operates to momentarily pulse the battery (10) at a predetermined charge rate.

Method and apparatus for monitoring batttery capacity with charge control

The low power voltage comparator with hysteresis includes a comparator (10) that is operable to receive the output from a battery (14) on the positive input thereof and the output of a battery (16) on the negative input thereof. An offset circuit (22) is provided in series with the voltage of the battery (14) and the comparator (10), and an offset circuit (24) is provided between the battery (16) and the comparator (10). The offset circuits (22) and (24) are adjustable by a hysteresis control circuit (26) to offset the voltage thereof for the non-selected battery to be higher than that for the selected battery such that the voltage drop across the offset for the non-selected battery is greater than that for the selected battery. When the voltage on the selected battery falls below the offset voltage of the non-selected battery, the hysteresis control then decreases the offset upon selecting the other battery and increases the offset or the battery that is deselected. The offset circuits (22) and (24) each comprise primary resistive elements (26) and (36) which are connected through a current sink (50) to ground. The selection process by the hysteresis control circuit (26) is operable to place a parallel resistor (32) or (44) in parallel with the resistors (26) and (36), respectively. The selection process is effected with switches (34) and (46).

Low-power semiconductor voltage comparator with hysteresis

A battery detect circuit (32) is connected to the battery with the current input to the battery and extracted from the battery measured with a sense resistor (50) and then converted to charge and discharge pulses with a V/F converter (52). A microcontroller (64) is operable to increment a Nominal Available Charge (NAC) register (180) during a charge operation, and to increment a Discharge Count Register (DCR) (184) during a discharge operation. The microcontroller (64) is operable to determine the rate of discharge corresponding to the voltage across the sense resistor (50). When the rate of discharge exceeds a predetermined discharge rate, the operation of the microcontroller (64) is partially inhibited. When the rate of discharge falls below the predetermined discharge rate, the microcontroller (64) is again allowed to operate in a normal operating mode. A resistor (61) is switched across the battery (10) by a transistor (59) for a short duration of time after the discharge rate had fallen below the discharge rate threshold voltage.

Battery monitoring circuit for operating with high battery discharge

A power control circuit (10) is operable to select between a backup battery (14) on a terminal (16) and a primary power supply voltage on a terminal (12) to output a voltage to a powered device (20). The two voltages are compared by a comparator (28) that drives a well bias node (44) with transistors (36) and (38). The comparator (28) selects the highest of two voltages on either the battery supply terminal (16) or the power supply terminal (12) to power the node (44), which node (44) is then connected to the wells of switching transistors (40) and (42) which are operable to select the battery terminals (16) in the event of a fail of the power supply on terminal (12). This decision is made with a power failure device (20). In the event that both the primary power supply voltage falls below a predetermined threshold and the battery supply voltage is at a higher level, the battery (14 ) is selected for output on the line (18).

A differential comparator is provided for controlling two switches (40) and (42) to switch two supplies (10) and (12), respectively, to a common output node (22). The decision/control circuit (44) outputs two control signals (46) and (48), the logic state thereof being a function of whether supply (10) is higher than supply (12) or supply (12) is higher than supply (10). The operating power for the decision/control circuit (44) is derived from the supplies (10) and (12), and not from the common output node (22), such that when the switches (40) and (42) are closed and no power is being supplied by either of the supplies (10) and (12), the decision/control circuit (44) has sufficient power to make a decision.
