A data transmission includes a sequence of information symbols followed by zero or more non-information symbols, which carry no power. A receiver determines the size of a data block, i.e., the number of information symbols in the transmission, by calculating a series of transition indicators. Each transition indicator represents a likelihood that a particular symbol position corresponds to a transition between the information symbols and non-information symbols of the transmission.

The present invention provides systems and methods for the assignment of a plurality of processors to a plurality of data servers. An exemplary embodiment of the present invention provides systems and methods for addressing the problem of transmitter/receiver assignment for softer handoff in CDMA systems as well as any other system that requires variable size allocation of processors in a resource sharing environment. An exemplary embodiment of a system for processing data received from data servers according to the present invention comprises a shared medium, a plurality of processors and a smaller plurality of intermediate nodes partitioned into K sets, wherein at the kset, every 'k' processors are associated with one intermediate node. The shared medium couples the data servers to the intermediate nodes. Additionally, the system may include a system controller for controlling the operation of the system and the assignment of processors to the intermediate nodes and to the data servers at the beginning of each service request and thereafter upon each modification request to the service.

Systems and methods for the assignment of a plurality of processors to a plurality of data servers

A new protocol layer is provided as part of a protocol stack associated with a packet-based multiaccess mobile communications system. The protocol layer is preferably located above a medium access control (MAC) protocol layer and a physical protocol layer of the system and below a transport/network protocol layer. Such a subnetwork protocol layer provides, inter alia, the communications system with various mobility management functions, for example, tracking mobile user stations throughout the system, mobile station access to the system, and connection/call continuity within the system. The subnetwork protocol layer of the invention also performs packet routing functions associated with the system. Routing can be accomplished in many ways, for example, via source routing, connectionless routing, or tunneling. Further, the new protocol layer of the invention is preferably located above a data link layer with respect to the protocol stack associated with communications between network nodes.

Subnetwork layer for a multimedia mobile network

The present invention provides systems and methods for adaptively decoding transmitted frames efficiently in non-Gaussian, non-stationary environments. One such system comprises a decoder adapted to decode a received transmission frame using a decoding scheme, a channel assessment unit for sensing channel characteristics, and a tuning unit for adjusting the decoding scheme based, at least in part, on channel characteristics sensed by the channel assessment unit.

Systems and methods for adaptively decoding transmitted frames

The present invention provides systems and methods for correcting errors in a received frame. The present invention introduces diversity into an error detection and correction system at the receiver side by decoding a received frame using a plurality of decoding schemes. Each of these schemes are optimized for a different set of underlying assumptions. The schemes may be optimized to account for various types of noise including, not limited to, Gaussian noise and impulsive noise. The plurality of decoded frames are then validated using an outer decoder to choose a valid frame from candidate decoded frames. By including a plurality of decoders using a plurality of decoding schemes, the error detection and correction system may accurately detect and correct errors in a constantly changing environment having constantly changing noise patterns.

Systems and methods for correcting errors in a received frame

A distributed dynamic channel allocation algorithm for a multi-carrier CDMA cellular system having at least one mobile base station. The distributed dynamic channel allocation algorithm uses channel power measurements from both the requesting mobile station and the mobile base station attempting to allocate an available resource to the mobile station. The distributed dynamic channel allocation algorithm attempts to allocate the best available resource for the requesting mobile station, in terms of interference, while minimizing the amount of interruption that the allocated resource may cause to existing connections in neighboring cells. Thus, the distributed dynamic channel allocation algorithm follows a 'least-interference, least-interruption' strategy. The distributed dynamic channel allocation algorithm is load balancing, since it tends to assign new resources to mobile base station with lighter loads.

Distributed dynamic channel allocation technique for multi-carrier CDMA cellular systems with mobile base stations

In the method of processing soft handoff information at a base station, soft handoff information of a mobile station is received at the base station. The soft handoff information indicates at least a number of base stations in an active list of the mobile station. The active list is a list of base stations involved in a call of the mobile station. The base station applies a rules set to the soft handoff information to determine changes in the active list. The rules set requires more stringent conditions be met to add a base station to the active list when the active list includes a first number of base stations as compared to when the active list includes a second number of base stations; wherein the first number is greater than the second number. The determination results are then sent to the mobile station.

Method of processing soft handoff information at a base station

A method and system of decoding data including a padding unit, interleaver unit and decoder. A block of data symbols where each data symbol represents an encoded data bit, is received by the padding unit. The padding unit determines if the block data symbols has a number of data symbols equal to a threshold value M. If the number of data symbols is less than M, the padding unit pads the block of data symbols with at least one padding symbol. The decoder decodes the padded block of data symbols.

Method and system of decoding an encoded data block

A novel topology sensing methodology is provided for point-to-point link setup among a set of network nodes, which are mobile. The technique provided is TDMA contention-based, where each network node sends pilot signals to announce its existence. Pilot signals transmitted by network nodes are used by surrounding nodes to extract various pieces of information such as node identity, node location and potential link quality. Information collected from pilot signals of neighboring nodes is used in conjunction with other topological criteria to identify the best set of nodes with which a given node should establish links. The topology sensing methodology avoids duplexer problems and attempts to achieve minimum collision by allowing the nodes to continually monitor available pilots and transmit on the least-interference channels. The topology sensing methodology can also optionally make use of GPS information, when available, in order to provide an accurate map for communicating nodes and improve the link setup process.

Methods and apparatus for topology sensing in networks with mobile nodes

In an ad-hoc mobile network, a geometry-based routing protocol (GRP) is used to route traffic from a source node to a destination node. In the GRP, each node maintains a location list, which comprises location information for a number of nodes of the ad-hoc mobile network. Periodically, each node transmits to its direct neighbors (i.e., those nodes with which it has a point-to-point link) (a) its location, and (b) its location list. Each node that receives a location list from an adjacent node merges the received location list into its own location list such that location information for existing nodes, and/or newly identified nodes, is current.

Location based routing for mobile ad-hoc networks

A method of detecting the format of received information by detecting the format of a guiding channel of a communication system. With the use of a lookup table or other mapping technique, the detected guiding channel format is used to determine the format of the other channels of the communication system. Therefore, the format of received information can be determined without the use of TFCI information.

Method of blind transport format detection

A symbol synchronizer comprises a distance metric computation module for computing a metric from received samples using a distance metric function within a symbol sampling period and based on a timing signal for each of the possible symbols in a constellation, a control signal computation module for selecting a smallest and a second smallest metrics, producing a difference by subtracting the smallest metric from the second smallest metric, and deriving a control signal from the difference, and a voltage-control clock for producing the timing signal based on the control signal.

Symbol synchronizer for impulse noise channels

A method of detecting the format of received information by measuring the time period during which information being received have a power that is at or above a defined threshold. The measured time period and the information rate of the received information are then used to determine an estimate information size value of the received information. The estimated information size value is then applied to an algorithm that determines the format of the received information. Therefore, the format of received information can be detected without the use of TFCI information.

Method of blind transport format detection based on power transition

An addressing scheme for a packet-based multiaccess mobile communications system, which includes a plurality of mobile user stations and a plurality of network nodes, is provided. In such addressing scheme, each mobile station is assigned an address which is a combination (preferably, a concatenation) of a unique identifier of a network node with which the mobile station is currently associated and an identifier of the mobile station. The network node identifiers may be uniquely assigned by a network administrator, while the identifiers of the mobile stations may, for example, be set to a universal MAC address assigned to the station. The address may also include a port identifier which indicates the particular application flow associated with the accompanying packets. Similarly, each network node is assigned an address which is a combination (preferably, a concatenation) of its network node identifier and, preferably, an interface identifier. The address may also include a port identifier.

Addressing scheme for a multimedia mobile network

In an ad-hoc mobile network, a geometry-based routing algorithm (GRA) is used to route traffic from a source node to a destination node. In the GRA, a source node maintains location information and routing information for all nodes in a local area and approximate location information for at least some nodes outside the local area. If the source node has to send a packet to a destination node outside their local area, then the source node uses the approximate location information of the destination node to identify which node in its local area is closer to the destination node than the source node. The source node then sends the packet to the identified local node for further routing.
