Cartridge for carrying test panel

A fluid specimen collection, storage, transport, and testing cup contains a chromatographic strip-carrying caddy which moves between an initial position allowing a deposited liquid specimen to contact the test strips, and a second, sealed position where the strips are hermetically isolated from a remainder portion of the specimen stored for later confirmatory testing. The caddy is moved between the two positions by screwing a threaded lid onto the top opening of the cup. The axial range of the screw is limited by a removable obstruction collar. The caddy can include a liquid specimen containing chamber having a lower opening sealed by a frangible barrier. The strips can be loaded in a cartridge mountable to the caddy. An adulteration panel having a transparent adhesive backed fronting can secure adulteration patches to the caddy.

An assay test device comprises a cup container having a detachable top cover that has a volume-reducing internal structure. A pocket shaped and dimensioned to nest a chromatographic test strip cartridge is mounted against a flattened transparent portion of the cup side wall. The cartridge is held in a vertical position with an aperture near the top edge of the cup. A splash shield projects for the brim region of the cup over that aperture preventing any part of the sample fluid poured into the cup from entering the cartridge and contacting the test strips prematurely. When the lid is installed and the cup flipped upside-down, the internally projecting structure raises the level of sample fluid for better access to the cartridge aperture. The structure can be adapted to extend all the way through the inside of the cup to contact its closed bottom. A central cavity in the structure having a open end captures a small volume of fluid and preserves it for later confirmatory analysis. In one embodiment of the invention the central cavity is created by a well secured to the bottom of the cup that is telescopically engage by a cap secured to an undersurface portion of the internally projecting structure.

A spongy swab () is mounted against the distal face () of a piston () at the end of a push-rod (). Once humected with a sample fluid, the swab and piston assembly is inserted into a tubular body () like the plunger of a syringe. As the swab is pushed and squeezed against the distal end () of the body up to a trippable stop, part of the fluid is excreted into a chromatographic immunoassay testing device () through a first aperture () in a distal section of the body. The remainder of the sample is kept in a sealed chamber () between the piston and the end wall of the tubular body until it is excreted through a second aperture () for a secondary test by pushing the piston beyond the trippable stop. That preserves the sample within the spongy swab that has been used to collect it; thus preventing the adsorption of the analytes on the surfaces of the sealed chamber, and to provide a convenient and rapid way to extract the remainder of the specimen in a syringe-like manner.

A fluid specimen collecting and testing device has two chambers each sealable by a lid. A first chamber has a portion of the specimen volume for carrying out a field test. A second chamber preserves an untainted portion of the fluid for more rigorous laboratory testing. A volume of fluid is temporarily allowed to pass from one chamber to the other through a sealable passageway. One lid carries one or more chromatic graphic reaction testing strips.
