A service gateway provides a proxy between a client protocol and a plurality of standard communication protocols. The service gateway provides asymmetrical routing, data compression and encryption to optimize client processing power and communication link bandwidth. The service gateway enables content translation between clients and service providers. The service gateway keeps track of client available memory and sequence numbers in messages to generate error codes when applicable. A store and forward message capability is provided along with abstract session identifiers. The service gateway supports user datagram protocol.

This invention relates to methods and systems for the transmission and reception of targeted content. Using the systems and methods, a wide variety of different types of content can be targeted to a single client or a group of clients. The methods and systems utilize action handlers to handle different types of content. Further, the system can distribute packets with different rates depending on their priority.

Targeted content streaming and reception system

Content can be segmented and each segment encoded at multiple different quality levels. A manifest file can describe the segments, and encodings thereof, present on each computing device. A channel definition can define content, users and computing devices among which such content is shared. Computing devices receive notification of any new shared and can stream or download it from any one or more other computing devices that have such content encoded at a quality appropriate for the capabilities of the recipient computing device. The recipient computing device can aggregate manifests from currently available computing devices, or can receive an already aggregated manifest. The multi-segmented multi-encoded content can be obtained from multiple computing devices simultaneously by obtaining interleaving segments from individual computing devices. If content still cannot be obtained efficiently, a different encoding can be selected, thereby potentially making available other computing devices as additional sources.

Distributed smooth streaming utilizing dynamic manifests

Described herein is technology for, among other things, selecting a representative thumbnail from a video clip. The technology involves analyzing frames of the video clip to determine which frames are stable, the result of the analysis being a number of segments of stable frames. From the stable segments, a number of candidate segments are selected, where candidate segments are those segments determined to a degree of certainty to be program content. The representative thumbnail is then selected from among the frames of the candidate segments.

DATP reduces the overhead of the communication protocol handler at the STB and makes the communication protocol handler common for all STBs applications. The preferred DATP protocol is portable for all STBs since it is written in a native language that interfaces with the underlying operating system of the STB. A SGW (SGW) performs as a DATP server. The SGW translates between DATP messages and standard communication protocols. SGW enables SP clients at STBs utilizing DATP to communicate with service applications using a variety of communication protocols. A content converter is provided to convert standard Web content into content suitable for display on a client-viewing device, e.g., a TV.

Digital television application protocol for interactive television

The present invention provides a method and apparatus for managing the presentation and regulation of E-Commerce, content and service providers access in an interactive television environment comprising interactions between a server, a client, and a service provider. Components are provided for managing and completing a purchase or delivery of an item offered by a service provider. A purchase transaction uses client information comprising partial client information from the client and a list of purchased items. Upon receiving partial information from the client, the server retrieves corresponding additional related information within its database and transmits this retrieved data from the server, along with the list of purchased items to complete the transaction. Business Agents are provided for logging the transaction, creating an electronic receipt, logging patches, logging error events, and viewer logging. The invention further comprises a method for measuring audience behavior and response to particular events or programs and advertisements; and a method for adaptive delivery of advertisements to a client. Advertisements are scheduled according to an agreement and manifested into campaign rules and desired run times. A profile of a viewer that resides on the client device is used as the criteria for selection of a particular advertisement from a broadcast and for polling of audience viewing habits. The present invention further monitors the integrity and connectivity of the interactive television network and service providers.
