A wireless terminal and a first node communicate according to a first radio configuration of a first set of radio configurations supported by the first node. A second radio configuration that is available for a second node that supports a second set of radio configurations that is different from the first set of radio configurations is then identified. The wireless terminal and respective ones of the first and second nodes then simultaneously communicate according to the identified second radio configuration. In other embodiments, a wireless terminal is handed off from a first base station to a second base station based on a determination of whether a common radio configuration is available for the first and second base stations. Related wireless communications systems and wireless terminal apparatus are also described.

Systems and methods for soft handoff and other diversity communication using base stations supporting common radio configurations

According to some embodiments of the present invention, a reverse link traffic channel code used by a terminal accessing a CDMA wireless communications system is controlled responsive to determining whether the terminal has a duplicate Electronic Serial Number (ESN). In some embodiments, for example, an alternative ESN may be sent to the terminal having the duplicate ESN for use in generating the reverse link traffic channel code. In other embodiments, a time shift may be applied in generating the reverse traffic channel code, such as by time-shifting the reverse link traffic channel code or a long code used to generate the reverse link traffic channel code. In still other embodiments, an alternative long code mask, such as a private long code mask used for a voice privacy feature, may be used responsive to detection of a duplicate ESN. The present invention may be embodied as methods of operating wireless communications systems and/or terminals, wireless communications apparatus such as network components and terminals, and computer program products including program code configured to execute in a wireless communications apparatus.

Methods, apparatus and computer program products for controlling a reverse link traffic channel code responsive to detection of a duplicate terminal identity

A broadband communication network uses a point and shoot approach for data transmission. A broadband information signal is transmitted from a transmitting station to a receiving station. The information signal is divided into a series of data packets, each including addressing information and data intended for a particular receiver. The information signal is parsed to extract addressing information. The addressing information parsed from the information signal is used to construct a narrow band index signal. The narrow band index signal is transmitted, along with the broadband information signal, to a plurality of receiving stations. Each receiving station demodulates and decodes the narrow band index signal. The address information contained in the index field includes pointers to data packets in the information signal. Using the addressing information and pointers in the index signal, each receiving station can locate and extract data packets from the broadband information signal which are intended for that particular receiver. The data packets from the information signal are buffered to permit demodulation and decoding the particular packet(s) belong to that particular receiver at the same rate of the information signals.

Methods for acquiring service for a wireless terminal can include the steps of camping on a control channel and receiving a request for an operation to be performed by the wireless terminal that is performed by the wireless terminal mutually exclusive of camping on the control channel. Control channel information associated with the control channel on which the wireless terminal was camped is stored and the requested operation is performed. The stored control channel information is used to acquire service for the wireless terminal. Related wireless terminals and systems are disclosed.

Methods, wireless terminals, and systems for acquiring service using stored TDMA digital control channel information

A method of providing push-to-talk and push-to-conference functionality in a CDMA system. Participants, in one embodiment, may be divided into active and inactive participants with active participants assigned a private uplink/downlink channel pair by the communication system. Inactive participants may be assigned a public downlink channel. In one embodiment, silent active participants of a conference or talk session are timed out and the private uplink/downlink channel pair previously assigned to such individuals are released for use elsewhere in the network or by other members of the conference. In a push-to-talk embodiment one private uplink/downlink channel pair may at any given time be passed between the presently active members of the group.

Push-to-talk and push-to-conference in a CDMA wireless communications system

Methods, receivers, transmitters, and systems are provided for performing a soft hand-over of a mobile terminal between base station transceivers that communicate using different communication channels. A mobile terminal may be configured to receive and demodulate signals on a plurality of different communication channels concurrently and to modulate and transmit signals on a plurality of different communication channels concurrently. This allows, for example, multiple communication connections to be concurrently established between the mobile terminal and a plurality of different base station transceivers that use the different communication channels to communicate. The mobile terminal and cooperating base station transceivers may perform a soft hand-over by allowing the mobile terminal to establish communication connections with one or more new base station transceivers to decide which base station transceiver should be given control before terminating any pre-existing communication connection with a current base station transceiver.

Methods, receivers, transmitters, and systems for performing a soft hand-over of a mobile terminal between base stations that communicate using different communication channels

A baseband signal phase-compensation technique offsets undesirable phase shifts, or changes in phase shift, introduced in a transmit signal when changing transmit amplifier operating modes. Such mode changes may, for example, entail switching amplifier stages in and out of an amplification signal path. A phase compensator selectively operates on the baseband signal or signals to subtract out an amount of phase shift equal to the amount of phase shift added by switching one or more additional amplifier stages into the amplification signal path. Compensating baseband signals is this manner may be particularly valuable for the reverse link signal of a mobile terminal operating in a wireless communication environment such as CDMA2000. In such environments, abrupt phase shift changes in the transmit signal associated with transmit signal power control are undesirable.

Amplifier phase change compensation

Downlink signal bursts are transmitted from a plurality of visible satellites to a plurality of user terminals in a downlink region that is serviced by the plurality of visible satellites. A first downlink signal burst is sent from a first one of the visible satellites to a first user terminal in the downlink region. A second downlink signal burst is sent from a second one of the visible satellites to the first user terminal to be received at a time that is a function of a separation distance of the first user terminal in the downlink region from the Time Alignment Center (TAC) of the downlink region. First downlink signal bursts and second downlink signal bursts also are sent to other user terminals in the downlink region. The first and second downlink signal bursts preferably are sent over respective first and second carrier frequencies. In preferred embodiments, the downlink signal bursts are transmitted in a plurality of repeating frames of downlink signal bursts of a predetermined frame repetition period. The second downlink signal burst is sent so that it will be received by the intended user terminal at a time offset from the first downlink signal burst that is one half the predetermined frame repetition period plus a delay time &Dgr;T that is a function of a separation distance of the first user terminal in the downlink region from the TAC of the downlink region.

Timing systems and methods for forward link diversity in satellite radiotelephone systems

Methods and systems are provided for a wireless terminal to select a control channel from a plurality of channels provided on a plurality of respective operating frequencies in which a first group of the operating frequencies are first scanned to locate a control channel that satisfies a first set of selection criteria. During this scan, channels are identified that fail to satisfy the first set of selection criteria but that have an increased probability of satisfying a second set of selection criteria. If a channel that satisfies the first set of selection criteria is not located during the first scan, the wireless terminal determines an order in which a second group of operating frequencies are to be scanned based on the identified channels, and then scans the second group of operating frequencies in the determined order to locate a control channel that satisfies the second set of selection criteria.

Methods and systems for scanning and locking onto a control channel via a multi-level search in a wireless communications system

A method for rapidly processing a directed retry (&ldquo;DR&rdquo;) message on a mobile station while the mobile station is void of an up-to-date neighbor list or in the process of completing neighbor list measurements. In one aspect of the invention, the method comprises the steps of receiving a directed retry message on a mobile station; setting SCANINTERVAL to zero and HL_FREQ to high if an up-to-date neighbor list does not exist on the mobile station; completing at least one neighbor list measurement within a wait time period; and invoking RTC-4. The step of completing the least one neighbor list measurement is accomplished within a wait time of about four seconds. The step of completing the least one neighbor list measurement preferably comprises completing 2 neighbor list measurements. If the wait time exceeds about four seconds the mobile station reverts to camping or idle condition.
