A cathodic gas diffusion electrode for the electrochemical production of aqueous hydrogen peroxide solutions. The cathodic gas diffusion electrode comprises an electrically conductive gas diffusion substrate and a cathodic electrocatalyst layer supported on the gas diffusion substrate. A novel cathodic electrocatalyst layer comprises a cathodic electrocatalyst, a substantially water-insoluble quaternary ammonium compound, a fluorocarbon polymer hydrophobic agent and binder, and a perfluoronated sulphonic acid polymer. An electrochemical cell using the novel cathodic electrocatalyst layer has been shown to produce an aqueous solution having between 8 and 14 weight percent hydrogen peroxide. Furthermore, such electrochemical cells have shown stable production of hydrogen peroxide solutions over 1000 hours of operation including numerous system shutdowns.

Selective extraction of one or more metal anions from an aqueous solution, by contacting the aqueous solution with an organic solution including a diquaternary amine, wherein the diquaternary amine has two diquaternary nitrogens spaced at a distance of less than about 10 &#x212b;, selectively binding the metal anions to the diquaternary amine, and then separating the organic solution from the aqueous solution, wherein the diquaternary amines having the selectively bound metal anions are concentrated in the organic solution. Alternatively, the diquaternary amines may be adsorbed or chemically bonded to a solid, and the metal anion-containing aqueous solution passed over the solid having the diquaternary amines. Palladium may be selectively extracted by contacting the acidic solution with an iodide and an organic solvent, allowing the palladium to bind to the iodide, and then separating the organic solution from the aqueous solution, concentrating the bound palladium ions in the organic solution.

Extraction of metals with diquaternary amines

Selective extraction of a metal anion complex, such as a platinum-group metal halide, from an aqueous solution containing other metal anions or anion complexes, by contacting the solution with a diquaternary ammonium salt having two quaternary nitrogens spaced at a distance less than about 10 &#x212b;, selectively binding the metal anion complex to the diquaternary ammonium salt to form an organo-metallic complex, and separating the organo-metallic complex from the solution. Alternatively, the diquaternary ammonium salts may be adsorbed or chemically bonded to a substrate, and the metal anion complex-containing solution passed over the substrate. Preferably, the two quaternary nitrogens are spaced a distance apart that is complementary to the ionic diameter of the target metal anion complex. Typically, the platinum group metal halide anion complexes have a valence of &#x2212;2 and each of the two quaternary nitrogens of the diquaternary ammonium salt have a valence of +1, such that the organo-metallic complex formed is a stable pair.

Extraction of metals with diquaternary ammonium salts

A method for molecular imprinting polymers with large biomolecules. The imprinted polymer composite is made by the interfacial polymerization of a monomer in the presence of the print molecule and host polymer. Since polymerization occurs at the interface between an organic solvent and an aqueous solution, the print molecule can be disposed in the phase that allows the print molecule to remain in its native configuration. The choice of the host polymer and the monomer to be polymerized can be varied to enhance the specificity of the composite toward the biomolecule that is selected to be imprinted.

Imprinting large molecular weight compounds in polymer composites

The present invention provides a formulation for forming an electronically conducting polymer. The formulation contains an electron acceptor comprising a dopant anion and a metal cation selected from Ag , Fe , Cu or combinations thereof. The preferred electron acceptor is a silver salt, preferably selected from AgNO , AgClO and AgNO . The formulation also contains between 2 and 100 moles of a polymerizable component per mole of the electron acceptor, the polymerizable component being selected from pyrrole, aniline, their oligomers, or combinations thereof. In addition, the formulation includes an aqueous solvent selected from acetonitrile, acetone, and combinations thereof, the aqueous solvent having up to 30 volume percent water.

Electronically conductive polymers

An apparatus is disclosed having at least one cathode adapted to maintain a line of contact with at least one substrate surface during relative movement therebetween. There is at least one anode located in a spaced relationship to the cathode and an electronically insulating member located between the at least one anode and the at least one cathode adapted to provide a gap between the substrate surface and the insulating member. When placed in a plating bath, the electric field is directed toward conducting patterns on a substrate to uniformly plate the patterns while minimizing plating on the electrode. The same device may also be used for electroetching by reversing the polarity of the electrodes.
