A controller may identify an indication to initiate an engine braking procedure associated with an engine of a machine. The controller may obtain, based on identifying the indication to initiate the engine braking procedure, information relating to a requested amount of engine braking power of the engine. The controller may cause one or more components of a variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) of the engine to adjust, and a throttle valve of the engine to adjust, based on the information relating to the requested amount of engine braking power of the engine.

Increasing braking power and exhaust gas temperature

A compression ignition internal combustion engine system includes an engine and an exhaust system with an upstream exhaust conduit, a downstream exhaust conduit, and an exhaust placement mechanism for mixing exhaust with fuel and air within engine cylinders. The upstream exhaust conduit has a raw exhaust inlet, a raw exhaust outlet, and a diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) inlet between the raw exhaust inlet and the raw exhaust outlet. The downstream exhaust conduit includes a bare particulate filter and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) device. Related methodology including operating the engine in a startup mode, and in a running mode once the SCR device is warmed, is also disclosed.

Engine system and operating strategy for selective in situ and ex situ limiting of NOx production

An aftertreatment system for treating exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine includes, in series, a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a diesel particular filter (DPF) downstream the DOC, and a primary selective catalyst reduction (SCR) catalyst downstream the DPF. A supplemental SCR catalyst is disposed upstream the DOC, DPF, and primary SCR catalyst to receive raw exhaust gases from the internal combustion engine. The supplemental SCR catalyst may conduct an SCR reaction on the raw exhaust gases until the supplemental SCR catalyst reaches a reaction temperature, at which time the supplemental SCR catalyst may conduct the SCR reaction.

Aftertreatment system and method

A fuel system for an internal combustion engine includes a fuel system, a valve train, and a fuel injector including a cam actuated plunger. The fuel injector has a noise suppressor fluidly connecting a plunger cavity to each of a spill passage and a nozzle supply passage in the fuel injector. The noise suppressor has an inlet configuration forming a fuel admission flow area to the plunger cavity, and an outlet configuration forming a fuel discharge flow area. The fuel discharge flow area is smaller than the fuel admission flow area, and the noise suppressor adjusts to the outlet configuration to throttle discharging of fuel from the plunger cavity to limit valve train noise.

A system is disclosed that may include a gas recirculation passageway configured to recirculate gas exiting an engine to an intake of the engine prior to the gas reaching an aftertreatment system associated with the engine. The system may include a valve configured to control a gas recirculation of the gas recirculation passageway. The system may include a controller configured to cause, during a compression braking procedure for the engine, actuation of the valve to produce the gas recirculation when the aftertreatment system is performing an operation that is temperature-dependent.

A method of increasing parasitic load on an internal combustion engine includes injecting a fuel into a combustion chamber of an active cylinder of the internal combustion engine, combusting the injected fuel in the combustion chamber of the active cylinder, and determining that increasing a temperature of an exhaust aftertreatment device is required. The method includes increasing a parasitic load on the internal combustion engine by deactivating a cylinder, wherein no fuel is injected in the deactivated cylinder for a combustion cycle of the internal combustion engine, and further increasing the parasitic load by pulsing a spill valve member of a spill valve of a fuel injector in the deactivated cylinder between a fully closed position and an at least partially open position.

Engine and method for exhaust aftertreatment

A fuel injector includes an injector body, and a plunger movable within a plunger cavity in the injector body. The fuel injector also includes a spill valve positioned at least partially within a main fuel passage, a fill passage forming a fluid connection between the plunger cavity and the main fuel passage, and a cross passage forming a second fluid connection between the plunger cavity and the main fuel passage. The fuel injector also includes a metering edge within the plunger cavity and positioned such that the plunger passes the metering edge during pumping to the plunger for valvetrain noise suppression. A metering slot may be formed in the injector body or the plunger.

An after-treatment system includes, in series along an exhaust gas flow direction through the after-treatment system: a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) delivery device, a soot-reducing device and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst.

A catalyst is disclosed. The catalyst contains a ternary nitride and at least one of gold, osmium, iridium, palladium, rhodium, rhenium, ruthenium, or cesium. The catalyst may be used for a particulate filter in an engine exhaust treatment system.

The system includes a first and a second group of exhaust valves associated with a plurality of engine cylinders. The system also includes an energy recovering assembly. An exhaust system for use with an engine is disclosed. The exhaust system may have a first treatment device situated to receive a flow of exhaust and convert a first constituent of the exhaust to a second constituent, and a second treatment device located downstream of the first treatment device to reduce the first and second constituents. The exhaust system may also have a sensor configured to generate a signal indicative of one of a temperature and an oxygen concentration of the exhaust, and a controller in communication with the sensor. The controller may be configured to vary the other of the temperature and the oxygen concentration based on the signal such that a desired amount of the first constituent is converted to the second constituent by the first treatment device prior to reduction by the second treatment device.

An exhaust system for use with an engine is disclosed. The exhaust system may have a first treatment device configured to receive a flow of exhaust from the engine and convert a first constituent of the exhaust to a second constituent. The exhaust system may also have a second treatment device located downstream of the first treatment device and configured to reduce the first constituent and the second constituent. The exhaust system may further have a flow regulator configured to selectively vary a rate of exhaust passing through the first treatment device, and a controller configured to operate the flow regulator such that a desired amount of the first constituent and the second constituent is received by the second treatment device.

An exhaust system for use with a combustion engine is disclosed. The exhaust system may have a passage connected to receive exhaust from the combustion engine, and a cooling device located external to the passage to create a thermal gradient across a flow area of the passage that causes particulates within the exhaust to agglomerate on a wall of the passage. The exhaust system may also have a filtration device located to separate agglomerated particulates from the exhaust.

A filter includes a housing including an inlet and an outlet, and the housing includes a first section and a second section. The filter also includes a plurality of parallel channels defined by a plurality of porous walls within the first and second sections of the housing. The plurality of channels extend between the inlet and the outlet. The plurality of channels in the first section of the housing includes at least one first channel including an inlet stopper and at least one second channel including an outlet stopper. The plurality of channels in the second section of the housing including at least one open channel.

An exhaust treatment control system includes a controller configured to determine a value representative of a NOconcentration associated with an exhaust gas upstream of a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst, and determine a value representative of a NO concentration associated with the exhaust gas upstream of the SCR catalyst. The controller can also be configured to transmit a signal to at least partially control an injection of a hydrocarbon into the exhaust gas, wherein the hydrocarbon injection can occur upstream of an oxidation catalyst to at least partially decrease the NOconcentration of the exhaust gas downstream of the oxidation catalyst, and wherein the oxidation catalyst can be located upstream of the SCR catalyst.
