A roll angular velocity sensor and an occupant sensor are operatively coupled to a processor, which provides for detecting a rollover condition responsive to a measure of roll angular velocity and controlling a safety restraint system responsive thereto, wherein a detection criteria associated with the rollover detection process is responsive to a signal from the occupant sensor. In one embodiment, a closure time is estimated from estimates or measurements of occupant velocity or acceleration, and the estimated closure time is compared with a threshold. If the estimated closure time is less than the threshold, activation of the safety restraint system is either inhibited or advanced relative to that otherwise provided by the rollover detection process alone. Otherwise, the activation may be delayed to provide additional time for the rollover detection.

Vehicle rollover detection system

A time-varying signal is applied to at least one coil in magnetic communication with at least a portion of a vehicle susceptible to deformation responsive to a crash. A sense resistor in series with the at least one coil provides for detecting a current therethrough responsive to a voltage thereacross. The current is responsive to a magnetic condition affecting the magnetic field generated by the at least one coil, responsive to the reluctance of a magnetic circuit with which the at least one coil is in magnetic communication, and responsive to associated eddy currents in proximal conductive elements, responsive to the magnetic field generated by the at least one coil.

Magnetic crash sensor

At least one time-varying signal is applied to a plurality of coil elements in cooperative relationship with and spanning different portions of a vehicle. The coil elements generate an associated plurality of magnetic field components that interact with the vehicle. At least one detection circuit generates a detected signal responsive to signal components from the coil elements so as to provide for detecting a change in a magnetic condition of the vehicle.

A magnetic flux is sensed within a gap at a first location between two portions of a vehicle body/structure and a signal generated responsive thereto controls an element of the vehicle, wherein the magnetic flux is responsive to a disturbance of the vehicle body/structure. In one embodiment, the first location is proximate to the A-pillar, B-pillar or C-pillar. In another embodiment, at least a portion of the magnetic flux is generated by a coil at a different second location. A gap coil is located within a gap between portions of the vehicle body/structure for generating or sensing magnetic flux. A plurality of gap coils of various orientations provide for multi-axis sensitivity. In another aspect, a magnetic crash sensing system comprises a first coil at a first location, and a plurality of magnetic sensors at a plurality of corresponding second locations.

Magnetic sensor

A roll angular velocity sensor and a lateral velocity sensor are operatively coupled to a processor, which generates a signal for controlling a safety restraint system responsive to measures of roll angular velocity and lateral velocity. In one embodiment, the processor delays or inhibits the deployment of the safety restraint system responsive to a measure responsive to the measure of lateral velocity, either alone or in combination with a measure of longitudinal velocity. In another embodiment, a deployment threshold is responsive to the measure of lateral velocity. The lateral velocity may be measured by a lateral velocity sensor, or estimated responsive to measures of lateral acceleration, vehicle turn radius, and either longitudinal velocity or yaw angular velocity, wherein the turn radius is estimated from either a measure of steering angle, a measure of front tire angle, or measures of forward velocity from separate front wheel speed sensors.

A rollover condition is detected responsive to the comparison of a figure of merit with a threshold, wherein the threshold is given generally as a function of a period of time commencing with a time of inception determined from one or both of a measure of lateral acceleration and a measure of angular velocity. The measures of lateral acceleration and angular velocity are filtered, and are compensated to remove offset errors. In one embodiment, the figure of merit comprises a measure function that incorporates a damping term and a product term. The product term comprises a force measure and a kinetic energy measure, wherein the force measure is responsive to the measure of lateral acceleration, and the kinetic energy measure is responsive to the measure of angular velocity. The product term may further comprise a potential energy measure that is responsive to a measure of roll angle.
