A coupling module can be used to communicate high speed signals between an optical transceiver and a processing module of an optical communication device, such as an optical line termination (OLT) or an optical network unit (ONU). The coupling module can adjust the DC offset voltage level of the signal output by the optical transceiver to the DC offset voltage level required by the processing module. In addition, the coupling module splits the output signal from the optical transceiver and passes the signal to both a high pass filter and a low pass filter that are connected in parallel. The outputs of the high pass filter and the low pass filter are then combined and provided to the processing module. The high pass filter and the low pass filter can be configured such that all frequencies of the signal from the optical transceiver are provided to the processing module.

Systems and methods for communicating high speed signals in a communication device

The present disclosure generally pertains to systems and methods for allocating bonding engines among bonding groups. In one exemplary embodiment, a provision module is configured to allocate bonding engines. When selecting a bonding engine for a new bonding group, the provision module only considers bonding engines residing on access modules that terminate at least one of the communication links of the bonding group. Out of the bonding engines residing on access modules terminating at least one communication link of the bonding group, the provision module selects a bonding engine servicing the least number of external links and assigns the selected bonding engine to the bonding group. The provision module also provisions the access modules terminating the communication links of the bonding group such that the selected bonding engine bonds such communication links during operation.

An integrated system concurrently connects voice and data communications devices used by small and medium sized businesses to a network T1 data line terminating at the customer premises. A system chassis includes multiple slots and backplane connectors for removably receiving a bank controller unit (BCU), power service unit (PSU), and one or more different types of smart and dumb voice and data access modules that provide the functional interface to the customer premises equipment. The BCU controls the operation of the system, which can be configured by the customer through an external terminal interface.

A bidirectional serial TDM backplane&#x2014;UTOPIA interface contains an ATM cell boundary location and transmit flow control mechanism, to provide for the efficient capture and storage of ATM cells from a serial TDM channel. In the upstream direction from the UTOPIA bus toward the serial TDM backplane, ATM cells are stored in a multi-cell receive buffer, so that they may be serialized for application to the TDM backplane. A fiber quadrupler device and method multiplexes the four optical fibers in a synchronous optical network (SONET) ring into a single linking fiber for full duplex optical transmission. The fiber quadrupler device optically couples two of the SONET fibers to a transmit converter for communications of downstream data from the SONET ring to a network element linked to the quadrupler by a single linking fiber. Two other SONET ring fibers are optically coupled to a receive converter for communications of upstream data from the network element over the single linking fiber to the SONET. An optical transceiver processes and directs the downstream and upstream signals to the receive and transmit converters. Either subcarrier modulation (SCM) or wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is used in the receive and transmit converters.

An arbitration mechanism is distributed among channel units of a statistically multiplexed frame relay switching system serving a plurality of access lines, the cumulative bandwidth of which exceeds that of an aggregate data link over which data is to be transported. For each access line, an arbitration code is generated. This code includes a transmit request or start bit, a calculated multibit arbitration value based upon a combination of parameters, including queuing delay and the configuration and traffic rate of the line, and an address code that identifies the physical location of the respective channel unit. All arbitration codes are readable by each frame relay channel unit via a wire-ORed bus. A channel unit participating in an arbitration cycle compares the value of its arbitration code with those of the other participants. That channel unit whose arbitration code is uniquely the largest of all arbitration participants takes ownership of the aggregate data link, transmits data, and then releases the link.

A simple network management protocol (SNMP) agent is distributed among individual channel units of frame relay switching system, rather than in a proxy device. The SNMP agent is implemented by encoding the identity of an individual channel device for whom a data packet is intended in the community data string portion of an SNMP packet. For a read request, the address of a channel unit is encoded as an augmented community string, such as &ldquo;public.&num;&rdquo;. For a write request, the address is encoded as an augmented community string, such as &ldquo;private.&num;&rdquo;.

In order to transport digital data across a reliable digital communication link from a transmit site to a destination site, the data is processed in parallel paths to derive error detection information, such as a cyclic redundancy code, and to encode the data. The outputs of the parallel paths are combined into a composite digital data sequence, which is then transmitted over the reliable digital communication link to the destination site. At the destination site, the encoded digital data component of the composite data sequence is decoded and then subjected to the same error detection operation carried out at the transmit site to derive error detection information associated with the decoded digital data. This recalculated error detection information is compared with the error detection information component contained in the composite digital data sequence. If there is a mismatch, the reliable digital communication link and the encoder at the transmit site and the decoder at the destination site are reset.

Transmission of encoded data over reliable digital communication link

State of the art data compression-protocol engines provide high compression ratios for improving data transport over a high data rate serial communication link. However, a respective data port of data terminal equipment may not be capable of being clocked at a sufficiently high clock rate, which limits the performance of the data compression-protocol engine, and prevents full utilization of the available bandwidth of the serial link. To remedy this problem, data terminal equipment and data compression-protocol engine components that provide auxiliary data communication port connectivity are employed. Data from the data terminal equipment is clocked to the data compression-protocol engine over a plurality of parallel data paths. This increases the effective clock rate and enables the data compression-protocol engine to output a compressed data stream that fully utilizes the bandwidth of the network. The data compression-protocol engine is programmable for either parallel data path transport or single path data transport to the network interface. In one embodiment, plural data streams from the data terminal equipment are compressed and then time division multiplexed onto the network. In a second embodiment, the data streams are statistically multiplexed into a single compressed data stream to the network.

Mechanism for providing full utilization of high data rate serial

Network bit efficiency for transmitting a limited size data frame over a digital communication system is enhanced by a macro-header encoding mechanism which replaces plural header portions of a data frame sequence with a single macro-header byte. The macro-header may be representative of protocol and signal processing operation fields that would otherwise require a longer overhead sequence as a precursor to data transmission. At the receiver, the macro-code is translated into a predefined sequence of opcodes, parameters and data bytes. Whenever the receiver requires another opcode, parameter or data byte, it initially looks to the macro-code. Otherwise, the necessary byte is obtained from the data frame segment being interpreted. Within a frame of data a multi-bit parameter header includes a first bit indicating whether the message is being aborted, a second bit indicating whether the frame is the first frame in the message, a third bit indicating whether the frame is the last frame in the message, a fourth bit indicating whether a sequence number follows, a fifth bit indicating whether the frame contains data representative of the length of the frame, a sixth bit indicating whether the frame contains data, a seventh bit indicating whether the frame contains frame check sequence signals, and an eighth bit indicating whether immediately following is an extension parameter header.
