An improved stent design and stent delivery catheter assembly for repairing a main vessel proximal to a side branch vessel and the opening to the side branch vessel forming a bifurcation. The stent is particularly useful in treating a bifurcation where plaque is present proximal to the side branch vessel but not distal to the side branch vessel. The present invention includes a trap door stent design, a stent delivery catheter assembly, and the method for delivering and implanting the stent in a bifurcated vessel. More particularly, the invention relates to a stent having rings aligned along a common longitudinal axis and connected by links. The stent has first rings that are implanted in the main vessel proximal to the bifurcation and one or more second rings forming a trap door section to appose the opening to the side branch vessel and the main vessel.

Stent for treating bifurcations and method of use

An apparatus and method is provided for stenting bifurcated vessels. A proximal angled stent is configured for implanting in a side-branch vessel wherein the proximal angled stent has an angulated portion that corresponds to the angle formed by the intersection of the side-branch vessel and the main vessel so that all portions of the side-branch vessel at the bifurcation are covered by the proximal angled stent. A main-vessel stent is provided for implanting in the main vessel, wherein the main-vessel stent has an aperture or stent cell that aligns with the opening to the side-branch vessel to permit unobstructed blood flow between the main vessel and the side-branch vessel. Side-branch and main-vessel catheter assemblies are advanced over a pair of guide wires for delivering, appropriately orienting, and implanting the proximal angled stent and the apertured stent.

Stent and catheter assembly and method for treating bifurcations

An improved catheter assembly and method are provided for treating bifurcated vessels. The catheter assembly of the present invention includes a tubular sheath for restraining dual balloons normally biased apart. Withdrawal of the sheath allows the balloons to separate and deploy intravascular stents in a bifurcated vessel. The catheter assembly also includes the feature of containing two guide wire lumens in a single catheter designed to track over a single wire prior to arrival at the bifurcation, thus preventing wire wrapping and crossing of the wires.

The present invention provides for an improved stent design and stent delivery catheter assembly for repairing a main vessel and a side branch vessel forming a bifurcation. The present invention includes a trap door stent design, a stent delivery catheter assembly, an apparatus for crimping the stent and the method for crimping the stent onto the catheter assembly, and the method for delivering and implanting the stent in a bifurcated vessel. More particularly, the invention relates to a stent having rings aligned along a common longitudinal axis and connected by links, where the stent has a proximal section, a distal section and a central section. The number of rings and the expanded diameter of the sections is varied to create a &ldquo;trap door&rdquo; capable of expanding to a slightly larger diameter than the proximal section and distal section of the stent. The stent is implanted at a bifurcation so that the proximal section and distal section are in the main vessel, and the central section covers at least a portion of the opening to the side branch vessel. A second stent can be implanted in the side branch vessel and abut the expanded central section to provide full coverage of the bifurcated area in the main vessel and the side branch vessel.

The invention is directed to an guide wire for intraluminal deployment of a medical device within a patient, the guide wire having an elongate core member with an intermediate core section comprising a plurality of contiguous segments in alignment with the longitudinal axis of the core member with alternating flexible and rigid core segments, so that the articulated section bends in a discontinuous, discrete manner when advanced through a curved blood vessel or other body lumen within the patient. When an obstruction on a vessel wall causes the catheter or other coaxial device to be impeded, the guide wire and intermediate core section may alternately be advanced and retracted a short distance through the catheter distal tip causing a &ldquo;nodding&rdquo; motion of the catheter tip while the catheter is pushed through the vessel, so as to avoid and bypass the vessel obstruction.

A stent delivery catheter assembly for delivering and implanting a stent at or near an area of septal perforators includes a torquing member which, in cooperation with a tracking guide wire and a positioning guide wire, facilitates torquing and rotation of the catheter and hence the position of the stent mounted thereon to accurately position and implant the stent at or near the area of septal perforators. The stent of the present invention has an elongated side aperture which is designed to be implanted next to the area of septal perforators to prevent covering of the orifices of the septal perforators.
