A tobacco smoking mixture including an ammonia-release compound adapted to be formed into a lit-end cigarette is provided. The ammonia-release compound is incorporated in or on tobacco cut filler in an amount effective to reduce the cytotoxicity, and/or selective smoke constituents of cigarette smoke. Exemplary ammonia-release compounds include ammonium acetate, ammonium hydroxide, hexammine cobalt (III) chloride, hexammine cobalt (III) acetate, and combinations thereof. The ammonia-release compounds can release ammonia at temperatures between about 60&#xb0; C. and about 400&#xb0; C. Ammonia-release compounds can be combined with additives, such as glycerine, cobalt acetate, copper (II) acetate, zinc acetate, other metal salts or combinations thereof, to further reduce the cytotoxicity of cigarette smoke.

A smoking composition for inclusion in a combustible smoking article includes a combustible organic material, such as tobacco and/or tobacco substitutes and at least one alkanoylated glycoside for enhancing the flavor of mainstream smoke. Method of making a cigarette and method of reducing cytotoxicity in tobacco smoke

Provided is a method for reducing TPM cytotoxicity, mutagenicity, and/or phenolic compounds and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the particulate phase of mainstream smoke. Also provided is a smoking article including tobacco material treated with a bismuth containing compound and optionally glycerin. The method includes forming a suspension of a bismuth containing compound, water, and optionally glycerin. Tobacco material is contacted with the suspension, and then dried to evaporate the water. The tobacco material is used to form smoking articles with potentially reduced TPM cytotoxicity, mutagenicity, and/or targeted constituents in mainstream smoke.

Incorporation of ammonia-release compounds in smoking articles

A tobacco rod having reduced levels of at least one phenolic compound precursor selected from the group consisting of gentisic acid, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, chlorogenic acid, rutin, scopoletin, quinic acid, a quinic acid derivative, caffeic acid, inositol and lignin. The concentration in mainstream smoke of phenolic compounds such as phenol, hydroquinones (e.g., hydroquinone, methyl hydroquinone and 2,3-dimethyl hydroquinone), catechols (e.g., p-coumaryl quinic acid, feruloyl quinic acid and syringoyl quinic acid) and cresols (e.g., o-cresol, m-cresol and p-cresol) can be reduced by reducing the concentration in uncured (e.g., green) or cured tobacco of the phenolic compound precursors. The concentration of phenolic compound precursors in tobacco can be reduced by forming an extract of tobacco solubles, removing phenolic compound precursors from the extract by treating the extract with polyvinylpolypyrrolidone or polyvinylimidazole in the absence of an enzyme to form a treated extract; and restoring the treated extract to the tobacco.

A cigarette paper includes heat-degradable filler particles to increase the porosity of the cigarette paper during smoking of the cigarette. The porosity of the cigarette paper during smoking of the cigarette will typically be from about 30% to abut 60%. The heat-degradable filler particles are capable of being dissipated at temperatures from about 25&deg; C. to about 350&deg; C. and/or at distances from about 0.1 mm to about 10 mm in advance of a charline formed in the cigarette paper during combustion of the cigarette. Methods of making the cigarette paper, a cigarette using the cigarette paper, and methods for making and smoking such a cigarette are also provided.

This invention provides a cigarette product which releases vanillin or ethylvanillin aroma in sidestream smoke under cigarette smoking conditions. The paper wrapper of the cigarette product has a content of a flavorant-release additive which is a novel 3-vanillyl-2-hydroxypropyl or 3-ethylvanillyl-2-hydroxypropyl substituted ether derivative of cellulose.

This invention provides smoking compositions which contain a novel .beta.-hydroxycarboxylate flavorant-release additive. In one embodiment this invention provides smoking compositions which contain a novel oxalate ester flavorantrelease additive. Under cigarette smoking conditions, a combustible filler additive such as methyl 4-oxo-.beta.-ionyl oxalate pyrolyzes and releases megastigma-5,7,9-trien-4-one as a natural flavorant component of the cigarette smoke. ##STR1##

This invention provides smoking compositions which contain a novel vanillin flavorant-release additive. Under cigarette smoking conditions, a combustible filler and/or paper wrapper additive such as ethyl 3-(4'-butoxycarbonyloxy-3'-methoxyphenyl)-3-hydroxy-2-phenylpropanoate pyrolyzes into vanillin and ethyl phenylacetate flavorants as volatile components of the cigarette smoke. A present invention flavorant-release additive is represented by the formula: ##STR1## where R is methyl or ethyl; R.sup.1 is hydrogen or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl substituent; R.sup.2 is hydrogen or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aromatic substituent; and R.sup.3 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aromatic substituent.
