The femoral prosthesis designed for use with a proximal spacer ensures that the prosthesis, when implanted in bone cement in a prepared femoral cavity, will have sufficient space between the prosthesis and the bone to receive an adequate thickness of bone cement.

A method and apparatus for performing hip surgery utilizes a preformed sleeve formed of bone cement material and having apertures which is positioned in the femoral cavity. Fresh bone cement is injected under pressure to fill the femoral cavity including the apertures and any spaces or voids between the preformed sleeve and the wall of the cavity. A femoral prosthesis having a stem portion is implanted therein. The interior wall of the sleeve is larger than the stem exterior wall portion encircled by the sleeve such that fresh bone cement is between the interior wall of the sleeve and the stem.

A cannulated tamp having a proximal compressive flange as used for compacting bone graft material in a femur having a cavity being prepared to receive a femural prosthesis. The tamp of the present invention is particularly useful in achieving uniform compaction in the proximal area of the femur. The compressive flange may be monolithic with the stem of the tamp or may be a separate modular member affixed thereto. Under one embodiment a series of passageways are provided for attachment to a source of vacuum for evacuating blood and other fluids from the prepared cavity.

A glenoid component for a shoulder prosthesis includes a body having a concave lateral articulating surface and an opposing medial surface with a stem extending along a central axis from said medial surface. The medial surface includes a central portion extending outwardly from the central axis and tapering toward said lateral articulating surface from an area of greater thickness of said body in the vicinity of said central axis to an area of lesser thickness outwardly from said central axis. Under one embodiment the body portion has an edge having a generally circular configuration while under a second embodiment the body portion includes an edge having a non-circular configuration and the tapering central portion terminates in a circular line of termination which is spaced from said edge in one or more areas and cooperates with said edge to define one or more extension portions. A method for and apparatus for use in implanting the glenoid component includes a combination sizer and guide and a reamer having a tapered cutting edge extending from a head in which a peripheral edge portion is contoured to engage the glenoid surface to prevent reaming to an excessive depth.

An acetabular cup assembly having a non-metallic inner cup to be positioned within a metal shell with a dome shaped interior surface. The non-metallic inner cup is formed with a plurality of interconnecting grooves and ribs. The ribs are configured to contact the interior surface of the metal shell while the grooves have inner surface areas spaced from the interior surface of the metal shell. The combination of the ribs and the groove define cavitites in the outer surface of the inner cup. The assembly further includes groove insert members that are configured to be positioned in and filling substantially all of the cavities.

An apparatus for performing hip prosthesis revision surgery includes means for preparation of the cavity left after removal of the original prosthesis. A tamp having a longitudinal passageway extending longitudinally through the stem portion thereof and a guidewire positioned in the cavity function to compact bone graft material in the cavity and form a precisely contoured new hip prosthesis receiving cavity.

A femoral stem prosthesis with a preapplied cement mantle having a design with elongated interstices configured to enhance the ability of additional bone cement to fully encapsulate those portions of the metal femoral stem intended to be within the cement mantle. A hip joint prosthesis includes a stem and integral neck having a tapered wall sized to receive a ball having a cavity for snugly receiving the tapered wall. The neck and the ball have matching configurations with probes and extensions of varying cross-sectional configuration designed to prevent rotation of the ball on the neck.

A patellar prosthesis has a dome and a body having a central post and an outwardly facing surface tapering toward said dome in a direction extending away from said central post. A plurality of cavities are formed in said body outwardly facing surface. The cavities include an undercut wall for retention of bone cement upon implantation in a prepared patella.

A lateral patellar retractor for use in performing knee surgery includes a handle, an integral flat support extending downwardly from said handle and joined to said handle by an arcuate section and a pair of integral prongs extending from said integral support in spaced apart relationship, each terminating in a pointed free, said integral prongs including a curve which is reverse of the curved path followed by said arcuate section, said support and said prongs being sized to permit the prongs to engaged the shelf of the lateral tibial condyle while said support is engaging soft tissue. Means may be provided for anchoring the support and detaching the handle.

Method for performing knee surgery and retractors for use therein

A tool intended to facilitate the trimming of the stem of a patellar prosthesis to adapt the length of the stem to fit differing cross-sectional thickness of a human patella is disclosed. The trimming tool includes a seat area for receiving the prosthesis and a cap member for securing the prothesis in the seat. The cap area includes an aperture therethrough which exposes a specific length of stem for trimming. A cutting guide on the cap member ensures that the stem is cut in a perpendicular orientation to the centerline axis of the prosthesis.

A femoral distractor for use in performing knee surgery includes a rod for insertion in the medullary canal of a human femur and a detachable handle assembly. The detachable handle assembly permits the leg of the patient to be moved between positions of extension and flexion without the necessity of removing the rod from the medullary canal by simply removing the handle assembly from such rod.
