A system and method for assessing an intravenous catheter site is described in embodiments herein. An application accessible on a mobile device may be used to take calibrated photographs of an intravenous catheter site. The resulting calibrated image may be compared to previously taken calibrated images to determine a complication. Success of treatments to the complication may be tracked and the patient's electronic medical record may be updated.

Clinical assessment of an intravenous catheter site

An infusion device for the passage of fluids to or from a patient via a syringe. The infusion device includes a valve assembly and a coupling apparatus. The coupling apparatus comprises a coupler, a first gland, a cannula, a second gland, and an inlet. The coupling apparatus defines a central lumen for the passage of fluids in an open configuration. The inlet may be coupled to a syringe.

An intravascular valve component broadly includes a valve case and a flexible pressure-actuated flow control valve. The valve case includes attached proximal and distal case portions that present respective spaced apart fluid ports and a fluid passageway extending between the ports. The flexible pressure-actuated flow control valve is disposed within the fluid passageway and includes a slitted central valve wall and an annular flange surrounding the central valve wall. The annular flange includes a radially-extending flange wall and a projection extending axially from the flange wall, with the projection engaging one of the case portions to restrict radial movement of the flow control valve relative to the valve case.

Intravascular valve component with improved valve positioning

A pressure actuated flow control valve for an infusion catheter permits gravity flow of a liquid through the catheter and into a patient while resisting back flow of blood from the patient and into the catheter. The valve has a hemispherical body with an outstanding circumferential flange and a normally closed, diametric slit. The slit is longer on the convex outer surface than on the concave inner surface. Dome thickness diminishes in the area adjacent the slit, reducing total apical deflection upon collapse of the slit toward the concave surface. An inner orthogonal rib biases the slit closed. Upon application of a predetermined pressure, the slit opens toward the concave surface to permit forward fluid flow. At lower pressures, the slit closes to check fluid flow. Greater reverse pressure is required to collapse the slit toward the concave surface to permit reverse fluid flow.

Pressure actuated flow control valve

An injection site () for infusion of parenteral fluids has a pressure-actuated valve () and a split septum unit (), which prevent reflux of blood into the assembly (). The septum unit () includes a resilient split septum body () precompressed so that the septum body () is caused to protrude proximally () upon insertion of a cannula (). Consequently, upon removal of the cannula (), there is essentially no 'drumming' or creation of friction-induced negative pressures sufficient to generate blood reflux. The preloaded septum body () also has its proximal surface () essentially flush and coplanar with the adjacent proximal end () of the tubular septum holder () to enhance the cleanliness of the unit ().

An improved injection site () for infusion of parenteral fluids and the like is provided, having a pressure-actuated valve () and a novel split septum unit (), which effectively prevent reflux of blood into the assembly (). The septum unit () includes a resilient split septum body () which is precompressed so that the septum body () is caused to protrude proximally () upon insertion of a cannula (). Consequently, upon removal of the cannula (), there is essentially no 'drumming' or creation of friction-induced negative pressures sufficient to generate blood reflux. The preloaded septum body () also has its proximal surface () essentially flush and coplanar with the adjacent proximal end () of the tubular septum holder () to enhance the cleanliness of the unit (). The specialized well () and septum unit () afford a resilient seal between the periphery of the septum body () and the surface (), and a separate hard-surface seal between the outer margin of the surface () and the septum holder ().

A catheter anchoring assembly includes a permeable adhesive strip, a platform for securing the catheter, and a flowable adhesive layer. The flowable adhesive layer adhesively secures the platform to the adhesive strip. The flowable adhesive is applied to one side of the strip with a skin-contacting adhesive on the opposite side of the strip. The flowable adhesive layer and strip are configured so that the flowable adhesive is spaced from the skin-contacting adhesive or, at the very least, is prevented from penetrating the skin-contacting adhesive. The flowable adhesive layer and strip also permit the assembly to be very flexible and, thus, comfortable for a patient to wear.

Intravenous securement device with adhesively interconnected anchoring component and permeable adhesive strip

An intravenous catheter anchoring assembly is disclosed and includes a patient-contacting membrane, a platform, and a retaining strap for securing a catheter or tubing of an administration set to a patient. The strap is attached to the platform with adjustable pull-tabs that permit a variety of catheter shapes and sizes to be secured. The strap is also elastomeric so that the strap is stretchable and thereby grabs the secured catheter. The strap and platform further define a plurality of passageways that permit the catheter to be secured in a plurality of non-aligned directions.
