A regulated current source that provides high DC current and low voltage ripple to a superconducting electromagnet. The current source is a multi-phase synchronous rectifier, wherein the rectifying elements are cryogenically-cooled MOSFETS coupled with a superconducting filter.

Conduction cooled cryogenic current source with a high-temperature superconducting filter

A multi-filament high temperature superconducting cable having improved AC current carrying capacity, quench resistance and flexibility. The multi-filament cable is formed from a plurality of stacked exfoliated filaments which provide current sharing between adjacent superconducting layers.

Flexible multi-filament high temperature superconducting cable

A structure and method provide cables of high-temperature superconducting flat tape and/or filament wires, with a small bending diameter. A cable has a former having cross section that includes a rectangle having rounded ends (i.e. an obround), and the flat tape is wound around the surface of the former at an angle to minimize bending. The former surface may have raised helical ribs or lowered grooves to provide tape registration in multi-layer configurations. Tape may be wound from a spool onto the former under tension, and cut with a laser cutter to produce fine filaments immediately before winding. The former may be slit longitudinally to prevent loop eddy currents and reduce AC losses. The wound cable may be jacketed to provide a cable-in-conduit conductor (CICC), and coolant channels may be provided in the jacket or in the former.

Cabling method of superconducting flat wires

A high-temperature superconducting filament and cable, and a method for manufacturing same. The substrate used to grow the superconducting layer is removed, and the exfoliated superconducting layer is coated with a protective layer, and then sliced into narrow strips. The strips are thereafter encapsulated with a conductive metal to provide a high-temperature superconducting filament. The filaments may be bundled together to provide a high-temperature superconducting cable.

The substrate and buffer layers, of either one-sided or two-sided superconducting tape, are separated from the YCBO layer(s) of the tape by a combined action of radiative or inductive heat and mechanical force via a reel-to-reel manufacturing process. The exfoliation process may also utilize an air blade(s) to facilitate the separation of the layers of the tape.

Reel-to-reel exfoliation and processing of second generation superconductors

A method for producing a long length high temperature superconductor wire, includes providing a substrate, having a surface with a length of at least 50 meters and a width. The surface supports a biaxially textured high temperature superconducting layer and the biaxially textured high temperature superconducting layer has a length and a width corresponding to the length and width of the surface of the substrate. The method includes irradiating the biaxially textured high temperature superconductor layer with an ion beam impinging uniformly along the length and across the width of the biaxially textured high temperature superconductor layer to produce a uniform distribution of pinning microstructures in the biaxially textured high temperature superconductor layer.

Long length high temperature superconducting wires with uniform ion implanted pinning microstructures

A radio frequency-assisted fast superconducting switch is described. A superconductor is closely coupled to a radio frequency (RF) coil. To turn the switch 'off,' i.e., to induce a transition to the normal, resistive state in the superconductor, a voltage burst is applied to the RF coil. This voltage burst is sufficient to induce a current in the coupled superconductor. The combination of the induced current with any other direct current flowing through the superconductor is sufficient to exceed the critical current of the superconductor at the operating temperature, inducing a transition to the normal, resistive state. A by-pass MOSFET may be configured in parallel with the superconductor to act as a current shunt, allowing the voltage across the superconductor to drop below a certain value, at which time the superconductor undergoes a transition to the superconducting state and the switch is reset.

Radio frequency-assisted fast superconducting switch

This invention provides a method of making a fluorinated precursor of a superconducting ceramic. The method comprises providing a solution comprising a rare earth salt, an alkaline earth metal salt and a copper salt; spraying the solution onto a substrate to provide a film-covered substrate; and heating the film-covered substrate in an atmosphere containing fluorinated gas to provide the fluorinated precursor.

Fluorinated precursors of superconducting ceramics, and methods of making the same

The present invention is a method for producing a crystalline end-product. The method comprising exposing a fluoride-containing precursor to a hydrogen fluoride absorber under conditions suitable for the conversion of the precursor into the crystalline end-product.

Methods of controlling hydrogen fluoride pressure during chemical fabrication processes

The present invention is a method of forming thick films of crystalline YBa Cu O that includes forming a precursor film comprising barium fluoride (BaF ), yttrium (Y) and copper (Cu). The precursor film is heat-treated at a temperature above 500&deg; C. in the presence of oxygen, nitrogen and water vapor at sub-atmospheric pressure to form a crystalline structure. The crystalline structure is then annealed at about 500&deg; C. in the presence of oxygen to form the crystalline YBa Cu O film. The YBa Cu O film formed by this method has a resistivity of from about 100 to about 600 &mgr;Ohm-cm at room temperature and a critical current density measured at 77 K in a magnetic field of 1 Tesla of about 1.0&times;10 Ampere per square centimeter (0.1 MA/cm ) or greater.
