A pointer for a gauge or an instrument cluster assembly is provided. The pointer is formed of a light conducting material. In one form, indicia are disposed about the axis of rotation and/or on a surface, the plurality of indicia configured to be selectively illuminated by the pointer. A second end of the pointer may be configured to be selectively rotated adjacent to each indicium of the plurality of indicia and to illuminate the indicia when the light guide pointer is disposed adjacent to the indicia. The second end may be wider than a first end of the pointer. In some variations, the pointer may have a fan shape, and the indicia may be configured as tick marks defining a bar graph. In some forms, opaque material may be disposed on the pointer, the opaque material defining a plurality of indicia on the pointer.

Light re-reflection in a picture generation unit for a heads up display is reduced by a housing having walls that are 'surfaced' to have inclined surfaces, which reflect light incident upon them toward inclined surfaces on a second and opposing surfaced wall. Re-reflections of light off the surfaced sidewalls attenuates light to a degree that it cannot generate a visible image.

An illuminated pointer for a vehicle instrument cluster provides a more uniform light by propagating light from a source, through an elongate, light-transmitting prism formed to have multiple, inclined light-reflecting surfaces. Each surface being at a different angle, reflects light at a slightly different angle producing a corresponding number of refracted light maxima along the length of the prism. A more uniform refracted light is produced.

Uniform illumination is provided to a ring-shaped or round instrument panel guage by a light-conducting ring made the exterior surface of which is roughened. The ring is formed to have a light inlet tab that receives illuminating light from a bulb or LED. The ring can have any odd or even-number of light inlet tabs.

The mount is movable to adjust a position of the display relative to the vehicle occupant. A controller receives information utilized to determine an orientation of the display that would result in a reflection effecting viewing of the display by the vehicle occupant and commanding movement of the mount to eliminate reflections on the display viewable by the vehicle occupant.

A pointer for an instrument cluster assembly of a motor vehicle is provided. The pointer includes a pointer arm and a light distributor formed of light conducting material. The pointer arm has a proximal end and a distal end. The light distributor is disposed at the proximal end. The light distributor has a light receiving side and a light reflecting surface. The light distributor is configured to receive rays through the light receiving side. The light reflecting surface is configured to reflect rays into the pointer arm. The light receiving side has an inner portion and an outer portion. The inner portion is disposed closer to the distal end of the pointer arm than the outer portion is with respect to the distal end. Angled surfaces are disposed on the inner portion. The angled surfaces are configured to refract rays toward the light reflecting surface.

A lighting assembly for a vehicle instrument panel includes a light guide supported within a light housing proximate to a light source. The light guide includes a top surface with a plurality of prisms for efficiently transmitting light toward a display and operator. The light guide may be coupled to a diffuser with a plurality of serrations that include a light reflecting surface for directing light from the light guide in a direction toward an operator.
