A communication system including a first station having at least two first narrow beam antennas and a second station having at least two second narrow beam antennas. The first and second stations establish a first communication path for wireless communication via a pair of first and second narrow beam antennas. When communication via the first communication path is disturbed by obstacles, the first and second stations automatically establish at least one alternative communication path, which is spatially different from the first communication path, for wireless communication using the at least two first narrow beam antennas and the at least two second narrow beam antennas.

Communication system and method

The present invention relates to the field of multi-path wireless communication. The present invention provides a system for assisting in providing a wireless communication link between a first communication device and a second communication device based on a plurality of communication paths comprising a history manager for providing, based on a recorded history of communication path states, a proposal for one or more communication paths based on which the communication link can be provided. The present invention further provides a corresponding method and a communication system and a communication device comprising the system of the present invention. Based on the proposal provided by the present invention, path switching can be performed more effectively, less and shorter interruptions of the communication link can be obtained and an enhanced transmission quality can be provided for multi-path wireless communication systems.

Adaptive history aware beam steering

A heterogeneous wireless network topology suited for low-power, short-range and ubiquitous ad-hoc communication. The network topology integrates different wireless transmission technologies, in particular to a wireless sensor network including different node types and communication technologies. The network is highly heterogeneous and can be operated according to the master-slave principle. The nodes can have different wireless communication means tailored to their individual role in the network and other constraints, thus allowing different communication patterns.

The present invention relates to a method for transmitting signals in a wireless communication system, in which signals are transmitted from a first communication device to a second communication device, said signals being transmitted in consecutive frames, each frame having a preamble section including preamble information, at least one of said first and said second communication devices having a narrow beam antenna which is adapted to be steered to different positions, each of said different positions corresponding to one of a number of different transmissions paths from said to said second communication device, including the steps of transmitting and receiving a first preamble section including preamble information enabling the estimation of a channel quality of a current transmission path, while said narrow beam antenna is in a current position corresponding to said current transmission path, steering said narrow beam antenna from said current position to a different position corresponding to a candidate transmission path, and transmitting and receiving a second preamble section including preamble information enabling the estimation of a channel quality of said candidate transmission path while said narrow beam antenna is in said different position.
