A method for detecting a user input based on a gesture in which image data of at least two individual images are acquired and recoding times are allocated to the individual images. Each of the acquired individual images is segmented, an individual image object is identified in each of the individual images and a reference point is determined based on the individual image object. A trajectory is determined based on the reference points in the individual images and a gesture is determined based on the trajectory. An output signal is generated and output based on the gesture determined. A device for detecting a user input based on a gesture having an acquisition unit for acquiring image data, a segmentation unit for performing segmentation, a trajectory computing unit for determining the trajectory, an allocation unit for determining a gesture and an output unit.

A method which includes detecting a user input based on a gesture, acquiring image data and performing segmentation based on the acquired image data, and determining an object with an outline. A reference point is determined based on the object, a distance between each of a number of points located on the outline of the object and the reference point is determined and a measured distance profile is generated based on these distances. A method for evaluating gestures based on data of a sensor having lateral drift-field photodetector diodes (LDPD) diodes, the method includes sequentially measuring first, extraneous light in order to obtain two dimensional (2D) data in the form of reflectance data; measuring second, laser light in order to obtain three dimensional (3D) data in the form of distance data; measuring third, residual light; obtaining movement artifacts in the 2D and/or 3D data which were caused by residual charges in a moved object; detecting a movement by processing the movement artifacts; and evaluating the detected movement with regards to a possible gesture.

The inventive relates to a method for external operation of an actuator of a vehicle having an optical sensor. The following steps are provided: obtaining an approach of a person in an approach area of the optical sensor; determining, within an obtaining area of the optical sensor, a targeted approach of a person's steps towards an operating area of the optical sensor; and operating the actuator when a step made into the operating area of the optical sensor is determined. It is the object of the invention to simplify the operation of an actuator of a vehicle by a gesture.
