A display device comprising a light guide (), a front plate (), and an intermediate electromechanically operable foil (). Two electrode layers () are arranged on either side of the foil () to induce electrostatic forces on the foil () and to bring selected portions of the foil into contact with the light guide (), thereby extracting light from the light guide (). The second electrode layer () is arranged on the opposite side of the light guide () with reference to the foil (), and separated from the light guide () by means of a refractive layer (). As no electrode layer is required on the light guide itself, the light path of rays extracted from the light guide is cleaner, and the absorption of light is reduced. The light guide can have a thickness such that the light extracted from the light guide per unit length is sufficient to allow for line-at-a-time addressing.

Line-at-a-time foil display

The electrophoretic display panel() for displaying a picture and subsequently displaying a subsequent picture has a pixel() having an electrophoretic medium () having first and second charged particles () and an optical state depending on the positions of the particles () in the common region () of the pixel (). Furthermore, transition control means are able to control a transition of the first and the second particles () being in substantially separated domains of the common region () for displaying the picture to substantially separated domains of the common region () for displaying the subsequent picture. For the display panel () to be able to have an attainable optical state for displaying the subsequent picture which is unequal to the optical state determined by the mixture of the first and second particles (), even if the particles () have substantially equal electrophoretic mobilities, the transition control means are further able to control the first and the second particles () to be in substantially separated domains of the common region () during the transition.

Electrophoretic display panel

A display device for displaying a three dimensional image such that different views are displayed according to the viewing angle. The display device includes a display panel having separately addressable pixels for displaying the image, where the pixels are grouped such that different pixels in a group correspond to different views. The display device further includes a retarder in optical association with the display panel. The retarder includes retarder pixels, where at least one retarder pixel is associated with each corresponding pixel in the display panel. Optical parameters of the retarder pixels are varied as function of the viewing angle associated with the corresponding pixel in the display panel.

Image quality in an image display device

A display device comprises a backlight () and a light modulating layer () such as an LCD device. The backlight () can be controlled to operate as a single homogenous light source for producing 2D images or a series of narrow parallel light sources for producing 3D images. Preferably, the backlight () is an OLED device and the 2D/3D mode switching is achieved by selectively energising all or a subset of parallel control electrodes () of the OLED device.
