A device for monitoring, in particular for closed-loop control, of a thermal cutting process carried out on a workpiece. The device includes a focusing unit for focusing a machining beam, in particular a laser beam, onto the workpiece for the formation of a kerf on the workpiece. The device also includes an image acquisition unit to generate at least one image of a region of the workpiece, and an evaluation unit configured to determine, based on the at least one image, at least one measured variable for the course of the gap width of the kerf in a thickness direction of the workpiece. The invention also relates to an associated method for monitoring, in particular for closed-loop control, of a thermal cutting process carried out on a workpiece.

Monitoring a thermal cutting process

This disclosure relates to methods for cutting metal workpieces in sheet form with a thickness of at least 2 mm. A laser beam is positioned in a nozzle opening of a cutting gas nozzle configured to cut via the laser beam and a cutting gas so that a beam axis of the laser beam along a direction of propagation of the laser beam is at least a distance of 3 mm from a rear opening wall portion of the nozzle opening. Cutting gas configured for concurrently exiting the nozzle opening with the laser beam is emitted through the nozzle opening at a cutting gas pressure (p) of at most 10 bar.

Method for laser cutting with optimized gas dynamics

A laser machining head includes a focusing optical unit for focusing a laser beam in a direction of a machining zone of a workpiece and includes a cross-jet nozzle for producing a cross flow that passes through the focused laser beam transversely (e.g., at a right angle to) a beam axis of the focused laser beam. The distance of the cross-jet nozzle from the workpiece is less than 20 mm (e.g., between 8 mm and 12 mm). A nozzle body having a bottom opening that faces downward toward the workpiece is provided laterally adjacent to the focused laser beam. A protective gas flows out of the bottom opening, which is arranged below the cross-jet nozzle in order to entrain the protective gas flowing between the nozzle body and the workpiece due to the cross flow of the cross-jet nozzle so that the protective gas flows over the machining zone.

A laser processing head comprises an optical focusing unit for focusing a laser beam on a processing zone of a workpiece and an annular nozzle arranged coaxially with respect to a central axis of the laser beam for introducing an auxiliary gas into a region surrounding the processing zone. The annular nozzle is mounted on the laser processing head so as to be displaceable along the laser beam axis and can be secured to the laser processing head in different positions along the laser beam axis.
