A method for reducing the pollutant emissions in the exhaust gas in a start/catalytic converter heating phase of an internal combustion engine featuring externally supplied ignition and having at least one catalytic converter in an exhaust gas tract of the internal combustion engine, and for adapting a catalytic converter heating strategy to suitable state variables of the internal combustion engine and the catalytic converter as well as to the fuel quantity, the aging state and ambient conditions. The internal combustion engine is operated in a first phase of the start/catalytic converter heating phase using a lean air-fuel mixture in a range between a lambda value of 1.05 and at a lean misfire limit of the internal combustion engine that lies at a higher lambda value, and/or in a second phase of the start/catalytic converter heating phase, initially using a rich air-fuel mixture.

Method and device for reducing the emissions of an internal combustion engine

A method for operating a combustion engine after a cold start, the combustion engine including a supercharger device, a plurality of combustion chambers, a fuel-injection device injecting into each of the combustion chambers, and a gas-exchange valve control device that controls gas-exchange valves in a variable manner. A rich fuel-air mixture is generated in the combustion chambers, and the combustion-chamber charges are ignited in a retarded manner. Following the cold start, the combustion engine is operated with first valve overlaps that are greater than in a warm combustion engine. A first exhaust valve of a first combustion chamber is initially closed at such a late point that its opening duration overlaps with the opening duration of a second exhaust valve of a second combustion chamber that directly follows the first combustion chamber in the ignition sequence and that discharges into the same exhaust manifold as the first combustion chamber.

Method for operating a combustion engine following a cold start

A device and method for controlling an internal combustion engine () includes a charger () for increasing pressure of air supplied to the engine. IN addition, a catalyzer () for refining exhaust of the engine is provided. In dependence on the temperature of the catalyzer (), the charger () is activated and the time point of the combustion is shifted in the direction of 'late'.
