A forming body of a glass forming apparatus may include a first conduit comprising a first conduit wall and at least one slot in the first conduit wall, and a second conduit disposed above and vertically aligned with the first conduit, the second conduit comprising a second conduit wall and a slot extending through the second conduit wall. The forming body may include a first vertical wall and a second vertical wall extending between an outer surface of the second conduit wall and an outer surface of the first conduit wall at a first side and a second side, respectively, of the forming body. The forming body may include a first forming surface and a second forming surface extending from an outer surface of the first conduit wall and converging at a root of the forming body. Methods of forming a continuous laminate glass ribbon are also disclosed.

Methods and apparatus for forming laminated glass sheets

A glass manufacturing apparatus can include a conduit connected to a delivery vessel and an inlet of a forming vessel. The conduit includes a closed sidewall surrounding a channel extending in a flow direction of the conduit. The closed sidewall is continuous from the delivery vessel to the inlet of the forming vessel to define a closed atmosphere from the delivery vessel, through the conduit, and through the inlet of the forming vessel. The glass manufacturing apparatus can include a heating enclosure including a heating wall and a first heating element. The heating wall surrounds a chamber within which the conduit extends. The first heating element is positioned within the chamber between the heating wall and the conduit to increase a temperature within the channel. Methods for manufacturing a glass ribbon with a glass manufacturing apparatus are provided.

Glass manufacturing apparatus and methods

Apparatuses for making a laminated glass ribbon may include an upper forming body including an outer forming surface bounded by a pair of upper dams, and a lower forming body disposed downstream of the upper forming body and including an outer forming surface spaced from the outer forming surface of the upper forming body by an interior gap. An edge guide may be disposed along an interior upper dam wall and spaced apart in the interior gap from the lower forming body. Surfaces exterior to the outer forming surfaces of the upper and lower forming bodies may abut and be joined. A formed glass ribbon having a core glass layer and a pair of clad glass layers may include inner and outer portions that have substantially equal thickness ratios based on a glass core layer thickness compared to a combined glass cladding layer thickness in each portion.

Laminated glass ribbons and apparatuses for forming laminated glass ribbons

A laminated glass article comprises a core layer comprising a core glass composition, and a cladding layer directly adjacent to the core layer and comprising a clad glass composition. A stress of the cladding layer increases with increasing distance from an outer surface of the cladding layer from a compressive stress to a tensile stress, transitions to a compressive stress as a step-change at an interface region between the core layer and the cladding layer, and increases with increasing distance from the interface region to a center of the core layer from the compressive stress to a tensile stress.

A method for making a glass ribbon that includes: flowing a glass into a caster having a width (W) from about 100 mm to about 5 m and a thickness (t) from about 1 mm to about 500 mm to form an a cast glass; cooling the cast glass in the caster to a viscosity of at least 10Poise; conveying the cast glass from the caster; drawing the cast glass, the drawing comprising heating the cast glass to an average viscosity of less than 10Poise and drawing the cast glass into a glass ribbon having a width (W) that is less than W; and thereafter cooling the glass ribbon to ambient temperature. Further, the cast glass during the cooling, conveying and drawing steps is about 50° C. or higher.

Glass articles

Shaped glass structures, in particular to curved glass structures, having optically improved transmittance are provided along with methods of making such glass structures. Articles and methods described herein mask tube or reforming defects with help of refractive index-matching substances (e.g. optically clear adhesives) and/or additional glass layers. The articles and methods are applicable to any shaped glass, and is particularly useful for 3D-shaped parts for use in portable electronic devices.

Described herein are glass forming apparatuses with cooled muffle assemblies and methods for using the same to form glass ribbons. According to one embodiment, a muffle assembly for a fusion forming apparatus may include a muffle frame comprising a back wall, a front wall opposite the back wall, and a pair of sidewalls joining the front wall to the back wall in a closed-loop. At least one first cooling tube may extend through the back wall and the front wall across the closed-loop. At least one second cooling tube may extend through the back wall and the front wall across the closed loop such that the at least one second cooling tube is spaced apart from and parallel with the at least one first cooling tube.

A projection of the heat footprint in a resultant direction of the heating plane within the heat footprint can intersect the surface of the edge director. In further embodiments, a fusion draw method of making a glass ribbon can include radiating heat within a heat footprint of a heating plane toward a surface of an edge director. At least a portion of the heating plane within the heat footprint can face the surface of the edge director so that the surface of the edge director is intersected with heat radiating from the heat footprint of the heating plane.

A glass sleeve assembly for a portable electronic device may comprise a glass sleeve extending longitudinally from a first opening defined by a first rim to a second opening defined by a second rim. The glass sleeve may have an internal surface. A first end cap may be positioned adjacent to the first opening and may have at least a portion extending longitudinally beyond the first rim. A second end cap may be positioned adjacent to the second opening and may have at least a portion extending longitudinally beyond the second rim. A frame may comprise first and second ends and a central portion between the first and second ends. The central portion may be located within the glass sleeve. The ends of the frame may be connected to the end caps. Shock absorbing interlayers may be mounted to the end caps and the glass sleeve.

Apparatus and method for protection of glass display of an electronic device

A laminated glass article includes a core layer and a clad layer directly adjacent to the core layer. The core layer is formed from a core glass composition. The clad layer is formed from a clad glass composition. An average clad coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) is less than an average core CTE such that the clad layer is in compression and the core layer is in tension. A compressive stress of the clad layer decreases with increasing distance from an outer surface of the clad layer within an outer portion of the clad layer and remains substantially constant with increasing distance from the outer surface of the clad layer within an intermediate portion of the clad layer disposed between the outer portion and the core layer. A thickness of the intermediate portion of the clad layer is at least about 82% of a thickness of the clad layer.

Glass article with determined stress profile and method of producing the same

A method includes contacting a glass sheet with a forming surface to form a shaped glass article. An effective viscosity of the glass sheet during the contacting step is less than a contact viscosity of the glass sheet in contact with the forming surface during the contacting step.
