There is described an a bias charge roller including an electrically conductive core and an outer layer axially supported on the core. The outer layer includes a continuous raised pattern above a non-contact surface wherein the continuous raised pattern includes a contact surface having a height of from about 10 microns to about 40 microns above the non-contact surface. The outer layer transitions from the contact surface to the non-contact surface over a minimum linear distance of 100 microns or greater. The contact surface is configured to contact a charge-retentive surface of an electrophotographic imaging member so as to charge the charge-retentive surface.

An imaging apparatus includes an imaging member having a surface, a delivery member that is spaced apart from the imaging member, and a power source for generating an electric field between the imaging member surface and the delivery member. A functional material is electrohydrodynamically transferred from the delivery member to the imaging member surface when the electric field is generated.

Coating apparatuses and methods

A method and apparatus for displaying a reflective image in response to light emitted from an emissive display is disclosed. An apparatus includes an emissive display, a processor in communication with the emissive display, and an electronic cover proximate to the emissive display. The electronic cover includes a passive display layer having a plurality of passive display elements and a photosensitive layer responsive to emitted light from the emissive display. A method includes forming an emitted light image on the emissive display and exposing the photoconductor layer of the electronic cover to an emitted light image, causing the plurality of passive display elements to form a reflective image on the passive display layer so that the reflective image corresponds to the displayed image.

There is described an image forming apparatus including an imaging member having a charge retentive-surface for developing an electrostatic latent image thereon, a substrate and a photoconductive member disposed on the substrate. A bias charge roller for applying an electrostatic charge on the charge retentive surface to a predetermined electric potential is included in the image forming apparatus. The bias charge roller includes a first circumferential area in contact with the photoconductive member (CC), and a second circumferential area (CC) spaced a distance of from 1 &#x3bc;m to 1 mm from the photoconductive member. The image forming apparatus includes a power supply for supplying an oscillating voltage signal to the bias charge roller wherein the oscillating voltage signal has a frequency Am[f] and an amplitude Am[V]. The following relationship is met: (CC/CC)&#x2266;(Am[f]/Am[V])&#x2266;(CC/CC) by the image forming apparatus.

A bias charge member is pulsed into contact with a photoreceptor at high frequency as a mean to reduce contamination and wearing on both the bias charge member and photoreceptor.

Method for bias member charging a photoreceptor

Systems and methods are described that facilitate using TFT control of electronic discharge for surface potential reduction and latent image formation on an imaging member. Corona charging is performed to first create a background surface potential, followed by selective discharge of individual pixels using an array of TFTs to supply free charge carriers to reduce the electrostatic surface potential to nearly zero. This is followed by discharged area development (DAD) to develop the latent image on a print medium (e.g., paper). The described systems and methods do not require a HVPS to drive the backplane; therefore, the TFT matrix is electrostatically decoupled from the developer and other system components in direct contact with the imaging member. Accordingly, known addressing systems may be used to address the TFT array.

The presently disclosed embodiments relate generally to an image forming apparatus comprising: a) an imaging member, b) a bias charging roller in contact with the surface of the imaging member, and c) a delivery unit in contact with the surface of the bias charge roller, wherein the delivery unit is fabricated as a polymer matrix impregnated with functional materials, such that the functional material is transferred onto the imaging member from the delivery unit via the bias charging roller. Embodiments also pertain to an improved electrophotographic imaging member comprising a very thin outer layer on the imaging member surface, where the outer layer comprises functional materials, such as paraffin, that act as a lubricant and or a barrier against moisture and/or surface contaminants. The improved imaging member exhibits improved xerographic performance, such as reduced friction and deletions in high humidity conditions.

Apparatus and methods for delivery of a functional material to an image forming member

The presently disclosed embodiments relate generally to an image forming apparatus including a delivery member for delivering a functional material in contact with an intermediate transfer belt such that functional material is transferred onto one or more imaging members via the intermediate transfer belt. Embodiments also pertain to an improved electrophotographic imaging member comprising a very thin outer layer on the imaging member surface, where the outer layer comprises functional materials, such as paraffin, that act as a lubricant and or a barrier against moisture and/or surface contaminants. The improved imaging member exhibits improved xerographic performance, such as reduced friction and deletions in high humidity conditions.

There is described an applicator for use in an image forming apparatus. The applicator comprises a blade applicator comprising an elastomeric matrix and a functional material dispersed therein. The applicator blade is positioned in a trailing position with respect to a surface and wherein the functional material diffuses from the elastomeric matrix to the surface.

Delivery apparatus

There is described a delivery member for use in an image forming apparatus. The delivery member includes a cylindrical support member and an outer layer. The outer layer comprises an outer surface. The outer surface comprises a first surface section and a second surface section. The first surface section comprises an elastomeric matrix having a functional material dispersed therein and the second surface section comprises a cleaning material.

There is described an applicator for use in an image forming apparatus. The applicator includes an applicator comprising an elastomeric matrix and a functional material dispersed therein. The applicator includes an actuator for moving the applicator between a first position having the applicator in contact with a surface, and a second position. The actuator moves the applicator from the first position to the second position at a frequency of from about 10Hz to about 10 kHz wherein the functional material diffuses from the elastomeric matrix to the surface.

Presently disclosed embodiments relate generally to layers that are useful in imaging apparatus members and components, for use in electrophotographic, including digital, apparatuses. More particularly, the embodiments pertain to an electrophotographic imaging member having its outer surface patterned such that friction with the cleaning blade is significantly reduced.

Surface-patterned photoreceptor

Systems and methods are described that facilitate eliminating a need for a raster output scanner (ROS) or laser when generating a latent image on a photoreceptor. An addressable backplane is employed, comprising an array of field effect transistors (e.g., silicon or organic thin film transistors, or TFTs), wherein each TFT corresponds to a single pixel on a charge transport layer on the photoreceptor surface. Latent image formation is performed by forming a surface potential using corona charging, and then directing free charge carriers toward the photoreceptor surface to reduce electrostatic potential in areas that need to be toned. TFTs in the array are individually addressed, or selected, to connect to a common ground, which allows photodischarge to occur only in selected areas (e.g., pixels associated with the selected TFTs). Once the array of TFTs is addressed, an LED light source emits light over the surface of the photoreceptor, and only the selected (grounded) TFTs permit their associated pixels to discharge. In this manner, a latent image is formed without a need for a bulky and expensive ROS.

Presently disclosed embodiments relate to an improved electrophotographic imaging member or photoreceptor comprising a surface layer on the photoreceptor, where the surface layer comprises secondary electron emitting materials that act as a robust electrically active layer. Photoreceptors incorporating such materials into or on the surface will exhibit an increase photoreceptor life and also a reduction the operating voltage of bias charge roll (BCR) charging systems while maintaining excellent charge uniformity.

The presently disclosed embodiments relate generally to an image forming apparatus including: a) an imaging member, and b) a delivery member in contact with a surface of the imaging member, the delivery member has a surface layer comprised of an elastic material impregnated with a functional healing material, and the functional healing material is transferred onto the imaging member by diffusion through the elastic material to the surface of the imaging member. Embodiments also pertain to an improved electrophotographic imaging member including a very thin outer layer on an imaging member surface, where the very thin outer layer includes functional healing materials that act as a lubricant and/or a barrier against moisture and/or surface contaminants. The improved imaging member exhibits improved xerographic performance, such as reduced friction and deletions in high humidity conditions.
