A system and a method may determine formation strength of a well. The system and the method may use pressure measurements and temperature measurements to determine controlled fracture pressures before the uncontrolled fracture pressure is reached. The system and the method may use pressure measurements and temperature measurements to determine closure stresses while drilling and may use the closure stresses with core and log measurements to optimize a hydraulic stimulation program.

Methods for determining formation strength of a wellbore

A method for controlling drilling fluid rate in a wellbore is disclosed. A drill string is disposed into the well and connected to a formation testing or sampling tool. Drilling fluid is circulated at a first rate through the drill string. Data related to the wellbore, a formation about the wellbore or the formation sampling tool is transmitted to a processor. Upon analysis of the data, the drilling fluid circulation rate is changed to a second rate that is different from the first rate.

Adjustment of mud circulation when evaluating a formation

Embodiments of the invention include methods and systems for perforating a well using a wired work string assembly. According to embodiments of the invention, the method includes positioning a wired work string assembly in a wellbore, the work string assembly comprising a plurality of wired pipe communicatively coupled at each joint, a depth correlation tool, and a perforating gun assembly. A depth of the perforating gun assembly is determined from a depth correlation tool positioned within the wellbore, and an electrical signal related to the depth of the perforating gun assembly is transmitted to a surface above the wellbore. Firing of the perforating gun assembly is initiated via a signal transmitted from the surface above the wellbore. An electrical signal from the wellbore is transmitted to the surface to confirming the firing of perforating gun assembly. The system includes various tools for perforating the well using the disclosed methods.

A technique enables a simplified approach for providing subsea hydraulic control. A subsea installation comprises one or more devices that are actuated hydraulically. A simple signal carrier, such as a wireline logging cable, can be routed down to the subsea installation. However, hydraulic fluid for controlling the one or more hydraulic devices in the subsea installation is delivered via an open water umbilical that extends to the subsea installation from a separate workover control system.

An embodiment of the integrated sandface completion tool includes a casing section having a casing wall, at least one explosive charge connected to the casing wall, and a screen assembly connected within the casing section forming a screen-casing annulus, the screen assembly having openings formed along a portion thereof and a port in selective communication with the screen-casing annulus. A method and apparatus for improving reservoir communication includes, in one arrangement, use of one or more chambers to create an underbalance condition and/or a fluid surge in the wellbore. In another arrangement, a tool string comprises a packer, a circulating valve, and an atmospheric chamber, in which the circulating valve, when open, is adapted to vent a lower wellbore region below the packer when the packer is set, and the atmospheric chamber is capable of being operated to create an underbalance condition below the packer. In yet another arrangement, a tool string for use in a wellbore extending from a well surface comprises a closure member adapted to be positioned below the well surface, and a chamber defined at least in part by the closure member. The tool string further comprises at least a port selectively openable to enable communication between the chamber and a wellbore region. The port when open creates a fluid surging to the chamber to provide a low pressure condition in the wellbore region. A tool in the tool string is adapted to perform an operation in the low pressure condition.

Reservoir communication with a wellbore

A packer for use inside a casing of a subterranean well includes a resilient element, a housing and a rupture disc. The resilient element is adapted to seal off an annulus of the well when compressed, and the housing is adapted to compress the resilient element in response to a pressure exerted by fluid of the annulus of a piston head of the housing. The housing includes a port for establishing fluid communication with the annulus. The rupture disc is adapted to prevent the fluid in the annulus from entering the port and contacting the piston head until the pressure exerted by the fluid exceeds a predefined threshold and ruptures the rupture disc.

Packer

A system that is usable with a subterranean well includes a downhole assembly and an apparatus. The downhole assembly is adapted to respond to a command that is encoded in a stimulus that is communicated downhole. The apparatus is adapted to change a pressure of a gas in communication with the well to generate the stimulus.
