Hydrokinetic torque converter with lock-up clutch

An hydraulic servo device for a friction brake in a planetary transmission for motor vehicles contains a cylinder with stepped interior wall, a stationary dividing wall that has a hole and divides the interior of the cylinder into two regions, one piston in each of the two regions formed by the dividing wall, and a hollow piston rod that passes through the hole of the dividing wall and connects the two pistons. The wall of the cylinder has passages, through which a pressure medium enters or exits the cylinder, in each one of the regions formed by the dividing wall. The pistons in each of the regions of the cylinder divides each of the regions into an application-pressure chamber and a release-pressure chamber, forming four chambers in the order of an application-pressure chamber, a release-pressure chamber, an application-pressure chamber, and a release-pressure chamber. The hollow piston rod has openings which allow the pressure medium to enter or exit the piston rod and the application-pressure chambers. One of the ends of the piston rod is connected to the friction brake. The pressure caused by the inflow of the pressure medium moves the two pistons, which because of the rigid connecting rod, move with the same speed and direction, and the connecting rod, which engages or releases the friction brake, depending on the direction of the two pistons' motion.

In a bush insert with an orifice for a liquid-containing housing, which is insertable as a bush (22) in a passage opening (21) in the housing (3), includes an orifice (25) in its base, the base of the bush insert (22') is formed as a cone (29) pointing counter to the direction of flow (P') of the liquid and having the orifice (31) located in its tip (30).

A planet gear carrier arrangement is provided for an automatic transmission having axial support. The planet carrier arrangement comprises a planet gear hub member, a plurality of planet gear pins carried by said hub member, a plurality of planet gears rotatably carried by said pins and an oil collecting ring carried by said hub member. The ring has formed at its inner circumference a truncated cone. The ring further has a thrust surface provided on a side of said ring axially opposite the hub member.

In a planet carrier (1) comprising two carrier parts (2 and 3), connected together axially, at least one of which is provided with axially extending posts (8) and the other with fitting openings (12) corresponding to the posts (8), and wherein the posts (8) engage in the openings (12) in a form-fitting manner and in addition are connected to one another, the posts (8) extending axially from the one carrier part (2) have a triangular cross-section making use of the maximum amount of free space; the posts (8) are provided at their ends facing the fitting openings (12) with a step (10) of height substantially corresponding to the thickness of the other carrier part (3) in the region of the openings (12); and the fitting openings (12) formed in the other carrier part (3) have a triangular shape (11) cut back by a radius (9), which is connected to the openings (12) by a force fit.

In an arrangement for fastening an annular member on a hub member, wherein the annular member (1) has a locking tab (14) formed on its inner surface which engages in an annular locking groove (13) formed on the outer circumference of the hub member (2). The annular member (1) is provided with a radially extending wing tab (8) for fixing non-rotatably to the hub member (2).

In an axial bearing with an adjoining seal between two members, which form contact surfaces for the rolling elements (2) of the bearing, which are held by a cage (1, 15), one of the two members is formed by a thrust washer (4, 14, 18) for the rolling elements (2), which is integrated as a part of the bearing assembly and is provided at a central centering opening (7) with a conical seating surface (8) through which the thrust washer can be resiliently loaded radially by a sliding surface (11) of complementary shape to provide a radial seal.

A planet gear carrier with an annular oil shield that is secured in a region outside the planet wheel spindle to a side wall of the planet wheel carrier formed as a drum member of an adjacent clutch and extends so far radially inward that its inner edge inwardly overlaps the axial lubricating bores in the planet wheel spindles. The oil shield comprises a self-locking cone ring spreadably braced against the inner circumference of the drum member, a plastic molding clipped or welded to the smooth inner circumference of the cone ring, and an O-ring received in a retaining groove of the plastic molding.

A means for securing a connection between a planetary gear unit including one or more planet gear sets and a drum member surrounding them, wherein the planet gear carrier (8) carrying the planet gears (10) rotatably mounted on planet gear spindles (9) includes a larger diameter disc member (14) connected to the open end of the drum member (16) by a projection and recess (17/18) connection. Connection is axially secured by a securing element (30) formed as a ring adjacent the disc member (14) and having at least two, and preferably three, pairs of spreading arms extending radially into the recesses (18) of the drum member (16). The recesses (18) are provided with grooves (19) located in front of the plane of the disc member (14). The end edges (36) of the radial spreading arms (32) are engageable in the grooves (19) in the circumferential direction by plastic or elastic deformation.

Securing means for a planetary gear unit

A overrunning clutch having a lateral rolling bearing, wherein clamping elements (21) and rolling elements (23) are carried in respective separate cages (22 and 24) between an inner ring (15) and an outer ring (16). The rings are provided with tracks (17, 19 and 20) adapted to the clamping and rolling elements. The breadth of the rings exceeds the length of the clamping elements (21), the cages (22 and 24) adjoin one another, and at least one of the cages (22) is snap-fitted and axially secured by means of radial projections (27) in an annular groove (28) in one of the rings. The clamping element cage (22) has, adjacent the rolling bearing, an axial shoulder (25) and a radial flange part (26). The rolling bearing cage (24) has axially projecting annular beads (29 and 30), one of which merges into a radial guide flange (31), which is guided axially between the annular shoulder (18) and the adjacent flange part (26) of the free-wheel cage (22) and radially by the shoulder (25).

Roller element overrunning clutch

The connection for releasably joining two drum components of a hydraulically-actuated double friction disc clutch includes first and second drum components having circular cylindrical surface directed substantially axially, one overlapping the other. The inner component is formed with a catch groove or two catch recesses and the outer drum component includes catch projections, offset mutually 180.degree. and adapted to become locked within the catch groove. The outer drum includes tabs at an axial end adapted to fit within recesses formed on the periphery of the inner drum between catch projections. The drums are driveably connected by applying oppositely directed axial force sufficient to snap the catch projections into the catch groove. The drums are disassembled by elastically deforming the outer drum until the catch projections clear the catch groove and then applying an axial force that separates the drums.

An axial needle bearing assembly includes needles guided in a needle cage and located between thrust washers. The needles are distributed about the axis of the assembly and spaced angularly apart by the cage. The cross section of the thrust washers are L-shaped having nested legs surrounding the needles. One thrust washer has its leg inclined with respect to the legs of the other thrust washer and spaced apart defining a region in which lubricant is contained. At several angularly spaced locations, beads are formed on a leg of one of the thrust washers which overlap the other thrust washer and prevent disassembly but permit axial play between the thrust washers.

A compound planetary gear system for an automotive vehicle comprising a pair of planetary gear units with a common sun gear and a driven shaft disposed concentrically within the sun gear whereby an annular lubrication oil flow passage is formed in the sun gear, the sun gear being supported by its meshing engagement with multiple planet pinions journalled in a carrier, and a flow directing funnel registering with the oil flow passage which is adapted to direct lubrication fluid into the sun gear, when it is distributed to desired lubrication points.

An overrunning roller brake, in particular for automatic transmissions for motor vehicles having a brake race fixed to the gearbox casing, a rotating brake race connected to one element of a planetary gear unit and overrunning brake rollers arranged between the two bearing raced wherein support rings with a C-shaped cross-section are disposed between the races, the rotating brake race being in the form of a one-piece extrusion which forms both the rotating outer brake race of the overrunning roller brake and a friction brake drum for the gear unit, and retainer rings within the support rings for accommodating radial loads and for stabilizing the outer race.

A thrust washer assembly for a planetary gear mechanism including a pair of thrust washers on each side of each planet gear of the mechanism, the planet gear being mounted on planet pinion shafts in a carrier by means of uncaged needle bearings, the washers directly adjacent the planet pinions having angularly spaced ports located at a position radially outward from the needle bearings and the washers between the ported washers and the carrier having sector-shaped recesses at diametrically opposite positions whereby the recesses and the ports register to establish a pumping action that circulates lubricating oil through the needle bearings.
