A system and method for sample analysis using a portable gas chromatography (GC)-mass spectrometry (MS) is provided. The GC-MS system includes an injector configured to accept a sample containing a mixture of chemicals and release at least part of the sample for a separation by GC, a MEMS GC column with an integrated heater configured to accept and at least partly separate the mixture of chemicals, and a mass analyzer in a vacuum chamber configured to accept and mass-analyze the released separated chemicals. The MEMS GC column with the integrated heater is located mostly inside the MS vacuum chamber.

A system and method for sample analysis using sub-atmospheric pressure (sub-AP) laser ionization. The sub-AP ion source includes a holder with a sample containing analyte molecules, a pulsed laser beam configured to generate ionized species from the sample, an ion extractor adjacent to the holder configured to extract analyte ions from the ionized species by an extraction electric field Enear the sample, an ion funnel structure composed of orifice electrodes located along an ion funnel pathway direction z. The ion funnel structure has an entrance and an exit, the exit being the electrode with the smallest aperture in the structure. This structure is configured for accepting the analyte ions from the ion extractor at the entrance and dragging them toward the exit using an axial electric field Ealong the direction z. The extraction electric field Eis at least partly electrically shielded from the axial electric field E.

Sub-atmospheric pressure laser ionization source using an ion funnel

An interchangeable ion source for a spectrometer. The ion source includes an interface which mounts the ion source relative to a gas inlet of the spectrometer, a sample holder, a laser which produces a laser beam capable of ionizing the sample at ambient pressure, and an optical system. The ion source includes an equipment chassis which supports the interface, the sample holder, the laser and the optical system as a rigid unit such that the interface, the sample holder, the laser and the optical system remain in alignment upon attachment and detachment of the ion source from the spectrometer and an enclosure which embraces an atmosphere around components of the ion source. In addition, the ion source includes a circulator which circulates at least part of the atmosphere within the enclosure.

Ambient pressure ionization source using a laser with high spatial resolution

A method and system for deconvolution of a frequency spectrum obtained in an ICR mass spectrometer based on a detection of ion oscillation overtones of the M-th order (where the integer M&#x3e;1). A plurality of frequency peaks is collected within the frequency spectrum corresponding respectively to oscillations of different groups of ions, and associates at least one of the frequency peaks having a frequency f and a measured amplitude A with a particular group of the ions. The method and system identify whether the frequency peak is related to one of an overtone frequency, a subharmonic frequency, a higher harmonic frequency, or a side-shifted frequency of the oscillations of the different group of ions. The method and system derive calculated amplitudes of the overtone frequency peaks associated with the groups of ions by incorporating measured amplitudes of the frequency peaks related to the subharmonic frequency, the higher harmonic frequency, or the side-shifted frequency associated with the groups of ions into the calculated amplitudes of the overtone frequency peaks. The method and system generate a deconvoluted frequency spectrum including the overtone frequency peaks associated with the different groups of ions.

Spectral deconvolution in ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry

An orbital ion trap for electrostatic field ion trapping which includes an electrode structure defining an internal volume of the trap with at least some of electrode surfaces shaped to substantially follow equipotential lines of an ideal quadro-logarithmic electric potential around a longitudinal axis z. The ideal electric potential has an inner potential canyon, an outer potential canyon, and a low potential passage therebetween. The trap includes a trapping voltage supply which provides trapping voltages on the electrodes to generate a trapping electrostatic potential within the internal volume of the trap. The trapping electrostatic potential closely approximates at least a part of the ideal electric potential in at least a part of the internal volume of the trap.

Electrostatic orbital trap mass spectrometer

A mass spectrometry (MS) method which includes generating in a vicinity of the quadrupole ion trap hydrogen molecules, directing at least part of the hydrogen molecules into the quadrupole ion trap cell, applying AC and DC voltages to quadrupole ion trap cell electrodes to create a combined AC/DC trapping field, placing sample ions inside the quadrupole ion trap cell, cooling at least part of said ions using said hydrogen molecules as a buffer gas, changing the combined AC/DC trapping field to eject the ions from the quadrupole ion trap cell, and detecting the ejected ions.

Portable ion trap mass spectrometer with metal hydride container as source of hydrogen buffer gas

A portable mass spectrometer having an atmospheric pressure interface for introducing ions generated at ambient pressure gas conditions into a vacuum of the mass spectrometer. The mass spectrometer has a vacuum chamber having at least one vacuum section and at least one gas inlet for directing the ambient pressure gas including the ions into the at least one vacuum section. The at least one gas inlet has a gas passage channel of a length L and a limiting cross section S with a ratio of L/S being less than 20,000 cm. The mass spectrometer has a radio frequency (RF) ion guide in the at least one vacuum section positioned for collecting the ions from the at least one gas inlet and transmitting the ions further to a mass analyzer for analyzing the ions transmitted from the ion guide.

Portable mass spectrometer with atmospheric pressure interface

A device and method for transporting ions along a longitudinal direction in an elevated gas pressure region. The device includes a multipole ion guide having a set of rods positioned along the longitudinal direction on an inscribed diameter equal to or less than 3.5 mm, a voltage source which provides alternating voltages to at least a subset of the rods to create a trapping field in a transverse direction, and a conductance limit having an opening d and placed at the exit of the multipole ion guide. At the end of this configuration near the opening of the conductance limit, a converging continuum gas flow through the conductance limit is provided that transfers the ions collimating near a center of the ion guide into a low gas pressure region. The method injects ions into the elevated gas pressure region of the ion guide, and transports the ions in the converging continuum gas flow into the low gas pressure region.

Multiple ion guide operating at elevated pressures

A liquid chromatography interface is provided having an integrated column/ESI tip assembly including a liquid chromatography separation column, an ESI tip for generating ions having at least one emitting channel, and a temperature-controlled enclosure surrounding the liquid chromatography separation column. The enclosure has at least one opening and the ESI tip is exposed outside the enclosure through the opening. The enclosure has a heating or cooling device providing a substantially homogeneous distribution of temperature throughout an internal space of the enclosure where the liquid chromatography separation column is disposed. The enclosure includes at least one gas flow mixing element to permit heat exchange by directing a flow of gas toward the ESI tip. The integrated column/ESI tip assembly resides within a thermo-stabilized volume of substantially the same temperature from an entrance of the liquid chromatography separation column to the outlet of the ESI tip.

Thermo-stabilized nano- and micro- flow LC/ESI-MS interface and a method thereof

A method for fragmentation of analyte ions for mass spectroscopy and a system for mass spectroscopy. The method produces gas-phase analyte ions, produces gas-phase odd-electron containing species separately from the analyte ions, and mixes the gas-phase analyte ions and the odd-electron containing species at substantially atmospheric pressure conditions to produce fragment ions prior to introduction into a mass spectrometer. The system includes a gas-phase analyte ion source, a gas-phase odd-electron containing species source separate from the gas-phase analyte ion source, a mixing region where the gas-phase analyte ions and the odd-electron containing species are mixed at substantially atmospheric pressure to produce fragment ions of the analyte ions, a mass spectrometer having an entrance where at least a portion of the fragment ions are introduced into a vacuum of the mass spectrometer, and a detector in the mass spectrometer which determines a mass to charge ratio analysis of the fragment ions.

Method and apparatus for ion fragmentation in mass spectrometry

A system and corresponding method for processing of biological samples prior to spectroscopy analysis. The system includes a support for an organic sample, a solution applicator configured to apply a solution for extraction of at least one biomarker protein from the organic sample. The system includes a digester-medium applicator configured to apply to the organic sample a digesting medium capable of at least partial digestion of the biomarker proteins into peptides. The system includes a heating device configured to heat at least one of the organic sample, the solution, the digesting medium, and the biomarker proteins to a temperature above room temperature.

Method and apparatus for processing of biological samples for mass spectrometry analysis

A method for fragmentation of analyte ions for mass spectroscopy and a system for mass spectroscopy. The method produces gas-phase analyte ions, produces gas-phase radical species separately from the analyte ions, and mixes the gas-phase analyte ions and the radical species at substantially atmospheric pressure conditions to produce fragment ions prior to introduction into a mass spectrometer. The system includes a gas-phase analyte ion source, a gas-phase radical species source separate from the gas-phase analyte ion source, a mixing region where the gas-phase analyte ions and the radical species are mixed at substantially atmospheric pressure to produce fragment ions of the analyte ions, a mass spectrometer having an entrance where at least a portion of the fragment ions are introduced into a vacuum of the mass spectrometer, and a detector in the mass spectrometer which determines a mass to charge ratio analysis of the fragment ions.

A system and method for cleanup of biological samples from contaminants prior to spectroscopy analysis. The system includes a support configured to hold a sample including a liquid having at least one group of biological molecules with a surface of the support binding the molecules at a surface tension angle to the liquid of less than 180 degrees. The system includes an evaporator configured to evaporate liquid from the support, a solvent applicator configured to apply a solvent for dissolution of the contaminants in the sample, and a solvent removal device configured to remove applied solvent from the sample and thereby at least partially remove the contaminants.

On-probe sample cleanup system and method for MALDI analysis

An apparatus for mass analyzing molecules includes a mass spectrometer configured to select precursor ions having a mass to charge ratio range, a metastable species generator configured to generate a metastable species for introduction into the mass spectrometer, and a mass detector configured to detect a mass of the product ions. The apparatus also includes interaction region in the mass spectrometer where the precursor ions are converted into product ions via interaction of the precursor ions with the metastable species. The mass spectrometer includes at least one of a three-dimensional ion trap, a linear ion trap, or an ion guide. The interaction region is located inside the three-dimensional ion trap, the linear trap, or the ion guide; and at least one of the precursor ions or at least one of the product ions are excited by an alternating electric field or collisionally activated to produce additional product ions.

An apparatus for analyzing a sample material includes a desorption mechanism configured to desorb molecules from the sample material, a metastable generator separate from the desorption mechanism and configured to generate a metastable species, and an interaction region configured for metastable species ionization of the desorbed molecules so as to produce gas-phase ions of the sample material.
