A modular cable unit for oilfield wireline includes multiple cable modules. The cable modules are interchangeable to achieve a modular cable unit with desired telemetry and electrical properties to suit a specific application. The cable modules can be an optical fiber module, a power cable or an opto-electrical module assembly. The cable modules that make up the modular cable unit are preferably arranged in a triad configuration defining a substantially triangular tangent periphery and are surrounded by a polymeric casing having a circular periphery. The triad configuration of the modular cable unit contributes to an improved mechanical strength. A floating-tube type optical fiber element with improved mechanical strength is also disclosed.

Modular opto-electrical cable unit

A cable assembly for use in a hydrocarbon well of extensive depth. The cable assembly may be effectively employed at well depths of over 30,000 feet. Indeed, embodiments of the assembly may be effectively employed at depths of over 50,000 feet while powering and directing downhole equipment at a downhole end thereof. The assembly may be made up of a comparatively high break strength uphole cable portion coupled to a lighter downhole cable portion. This configuration helps to ensure the structural integrity of the assembly in light of its own load when disposed in a well to such extensive depths. Additionally, the assembly may be employed at such depths with an intervening connector sub having a signal amplification mechanism incorporated therein to alleviate concern over telemetry between the surface of the oilfield and the downhole equipment.

Extended length cable assembly for a hydrocarbon well application

A powered fiber optic cable for use in a hydrocarbon well of extensive depth and/or deviation. The cable may couple to a downhole tool for deployment to well locations of over 30,000 feet in depth while maintaining effective surface communication and powering of the tool. The cable may be configured to optimize volume within a core thereof by employing semi-circular forward and return power conducting portions about a central fiber optic portion. As such, the cable may maintain a lightweight character and a low profile of less than about 0.5 inches in diameter in spite of powering requirements for the downhole tool or the extensive length of the cable itself.

Dual conductor fiber optic cable

A fiber optic cable comprises a cable core comprising at least one optical fiber and one of at least one electrical conductor and at least one strength member disposed adjacent the at least one optical fiber, at least one polymeric inner layer enclosing the cable core, and at least one polymeric outer layer enclosing the cable core and the inner layer to form the fiber optic cable, the outer layer operable to maintain integrity of the cable within a predetermined temperature range.

Enhanced fiber optic seismic land cable

An electrical cable includes insulated primary conductors and at least one insulated secondary conductor, which extend along the cable. The primary conductors define interstitial spaces between adjacent primary conductors, and the primary conductors have approximately the same diameter. The primary conductors include power conductors and a telemetric conductor. The secondary conductor(s) each have a diameter that is smaller than each of the diameters of the primary conductors, and each secondary conductor is at least partially nested in one of the interstitial spaces. The electrical cable may include at least one fiber optic line.

Electrical cable

A heating and distributed-temperature-sensor cable permanently fixed in a wellbore that permits known amounts of heat to be introduced to subsurface formations and improved temperature measurement thereof. The heat is introduced into a target zone of the wellbore by forming the cable in two sections: an upper section that carries an electrical current without generating significant amounts of heat, and a lower section that generates heat from the electrical current. Continuous distributed-temperature-sensing is performed through measuring various scattering mechanism in optical fibers that run the length of the cable.

Active cable for wellbore heating and distributed temperature sensing

A component is deployed into a well on a carrier line having an optical cable. An optical signal is transmitted into the optical cable, and a travel time of the optical signal in the optical cable is determined. A profile of a characteristic along the optical cable is determined, and a length of the carrier line deployed into the well is determined based on the determined profile and the travel time.
