Proposed herein is a method of controlling the thickness of strip stock being rolled between rolls mounted in the roll stand of a mill. An adjusting force is developed to move the supports of one of the rolls, this force exceeding the rolling force and being directed oppositely thereto. Another force prevents the supports of the rolls from moving towards each other and balances the difference between the adjusting force and the rolling force. The factor of proportionality between the movement of the roll supports and the balancing force is in a definite predetermined ratio with the mill stand stiffness factor. The adjusting force is changed in the course of strip stock deformation to compensate for the roll gap variation in proportion to the rolling force according to the following formula:

The device proposed herein incorporates the following components located on both sides of the roll mill stand: hydraulic dynamometers for absorbing the rolling force; hydraulic cylinders for creating and exerting the adjusting force; and valves for oil pressure control in the hydraulic cylinder interior. The hydraulic dynamometers are situated between the supports of one of the rolls and the roll mill stand housing and the hydraulic cylinders are interposed between the supports of the other roll and the roll mill stand housing. The interior spaces of said cylinder and the dynamometer communicate with pumping units that deliver oil thereto so as to build up a pressure in the spaces which is in excess of the rolling force. The valves regulate the pressure effective in the hydraulic cylinder interior in direct proportion to the rolling force and the deforming force of the elastic members of the device.

Device for controlling the thickness of strip stock being rolled

A device for automatic adjustment of a roll gap in a mill stand, comprises hollow hydraulic load cells for absorbing or taking up a roll force. Said hydraulic load cells are mounted under chocks of at least one of the rolls and are not affected by the action of hydraulic cylinders adapted to develop a stand prestressing force. The hydraulic cylinders are of the two-chamber type. One of the chambers of each hydraulic cylinder communicates directly with that of the hydraulic load cell, while the other chamber communicates directly with a constant-pressure fluid source.

Device for automatic adjustment of roll gap in mill stand

The device for automatic adjustment of the roll gap consists of two similar operable parts arranged on each side of a mill stand, each part comprising a two-chamber hydraulic cylinder for prestressing the mill stand. The cylinder is fitted with two rods, one of which interacts with a bottom cross bar of the housing, the other one accommodating a load cell for absorbing a rolling force and being mounted so as not to be effected by the mill stand stress. One chamber of the two-chamber hydraulic cylinder communicates with a constant pressure fluid source and the other chamber communicates with a chamber of the load cell. The two-chamber hydraulic cylinder is fitted with a regulated valve, which has a throttle chamber in communication with a second chamber of the hydraulic cylinder and with an individual variable-pressure fluid source, and a control chamber combined with the chamber of the load cell.

Device for automatic adjustment of a roll gap between work rolls in mill

A device for automatic adjustment of the roll gap in a mill stand has at least one load cell for each side of the stand. The load cells are mounted under chocks of at least one of the rolls and are adapted to absorb a rolling force. For prestressing the stand, the device is provided with hydraulic cylinders which are mounted so as to have no effect on the load cells. The device also incorporates three-chamber fluid (oil) pressure regulators, one for each load cell, communicating through a first end chamber thereof with chambers of the hydraulic cylinders at the respective side of the mill stand, through a midchamber thereof with the load cell chamber, and through a second end chamber with a constant-pressure fluid source. In addition, the device is fitted with regulated pressure valves, one for each load cell, said valves having throttle chambers communicating with a variable-pressure fluid source and with a midchamber of the three-chamber fluid pressure regulators, a control chamber of said valves being in communication with chambers of the load cells.
