A high velocity plasma spray method and apparatus with relatively high plasma pressures of 3 bars or above. The preferable range of plasma pressure is 3 bars to 10 bars and a plasma enthalpy of preferably 10 KJ/g or above. The preferable enthalpy range is above 10 KJ/g and up to 20 KJ/g and the preferred specific power (Σ) is in the range of 16 KJ/g to 33 KJ/g.

High velocity plasma torch and method

The present invention is directed at a plasma torch and methods of plasma spraying wherein the delivery of plasma and spray material occurs at extended locations from the anode arc root attachment. Relatively high specific power and relatively high enthalpy plasmas are employed along with a plasma extension module to deliver a plasma spray at a remote location with a minimum enthalpy value.

A plasma apparatus is provided including a cathode module, an anode module, and at least one inter-electrode insert located between the cathode module and the anode module. The inter-electrode insert may have an upstream and a downstream transverse surface. Both the upstream transverse surface and the downstream transverse surface are angled in a downstream direction.

Deposition system, method and materials for composite coatings

A twin plasma apparatus including an anode plasma head and a cathode plasma head. Each of the plasma heads includes an electrode and a plasma flow channel and a primary gas inlet between at least a portion of the electrode and the plasma flow channel. The anode plasma head and the cathode plasma head are oriented at an angled toward one another. At least one of the plasma flow channels includes three generally cylindrical portions. The three generally cylindrical portions of the plasma flow channels reduce the occurrence of side arcing.

Plasma apparatus and system

A thermal spray apparatus is provided for thermal spraying a coating onto a substrate. The apparatus include a heating module for providing a stream of heated gas. The heating module is coupled to a forming module for controlling pressure and velocity characteristics of the stream of heated gas generated by the heating module. The thermal spray apparatus further includes a barrel capable of directing the stream of heated gas from the forming module. A powder injection module may be provided for introducing powder material into the stream of heated gas.

A combustion apparatus is provided having a pre-combustion chamber and a combustion chamber. The pre-combustion chamber houses a preheating combustion for preheating and at least partially vaporizing fuel supplied to the pre-combustion chamber. The preheating combustion is controlled so that only a portion of the fuel supplied to the pre-combustion chamber is burned. The combustion apparatus further include a primary combustion oxidizer supply located downstream of said preheating combustion. The primary combustion oxidizer supply supplies an amount of oxidizer to allow the fuel not burned by the preheating combustion to burn.

Combustion apparatus for high velocity thermal spraying

A thermal spray system includes a combustion unit connected to at least one port for supplying a flow of a combustible fluid from an external source of fuel and oxidant. The combustion unit includes a permeable burner block constructed to receive said combustible fluid from and to generate a high-energy stream of gas. The thermal spray system also includes an exhaust nozzle constructed to direct the high-energy stream of gas toward a substrate, and a material delivery unit constructed to deliver a material into the high-energy stream of gas to form a highly energized stream of particles. When the thermal spray system is used for bead blasting, the provided material is an abrasive material. Alternatively, when the thermal spray system is used for coating a substrate, the provided material is a coating material. The material delivery unit may be an injector or an electric arc unit. Instead of the combustion unit burning the combustible fluid, the thermal spray system may include a source of a high-pressure preheated gas such as a plasma source or an electric heat exchange source.
