The invention relates to compounds of formula (I), prepared by quaternising a compound (II) by means of at least one compound R&#x2014;X:R=H or &#x2014;CH; R=&#x2014;CH; &#x2014;CH; &#x2014;CHor &#x2014;CH; and compound (I) is optionally quaternised on one of the nitrogens, which is symbolised by the fact that the R, Xand &#x2295; associated with this nitrogen are shown between brackets; if compound (I) is quaternised on a single nitrogen, Rand Xhave the following meanings: (1) R=&#x2014;CHor &#x2014;CHCH; and X=Clor CHOSO; or (2) R=a C-C-alkyl group; and X=Bror I; if compound (I) is quaternised on both nitrogens, the two Xmay be the same or different and the two Rmay be the same, in which case: (3) R=a C-Calkyl group; and X=CHOSO, Bror I; or different, in which case: (4) one of the R=&#x2014;CHor &#x2014;CHCH; and X=Clor CHOSO; and the other=a C-C-alkyl group; and X=Bror I.

These compounds are represented by the formulae (Ia) and (Ib). To prepare them, in a first stage, p-xylylene dichloride is reacted with a compound (II) to produce a compound (III) and, in a second stage, the compound (III) thus obtained is reacted with a compound of formula (IVa) or (IVb), resulting in an aqueous solution of the compound (Ia) or (Ib) respectively, the water of which is removed, if appropriate.
