The invention relates to zirconium-based alloys and methods for manufacturing thereof and may be used in nuclear power engineering. The invention, as claimed, solves the task of obtaining a zirconium-based alloy used for manufacturing fuel rods for the nuclear reactor core, which possess improved engineering and operational properties. The said zirconium-based alloy contains its components in the following weight percent ratio: niobium&#x2014;0.9-1.1, oxygen&#x2014;0.05-0.09, zirconium&#x2014;the rest, and has the structure consisting of alpha-zirconium with oxygen irregularity zones not exceeding 30 nanometers, zirconium sub-oxide of non-stoichiometric composition, and beta-niobium. The inventive method of manufacturing the said alloy includes making stock of zirconium-containing material and niobium pentoxide as oxygen-containing and niobium-containing materials, stock treatment and manufacturing an ingot having the above composition.

Zirconium-niobium oxygen-containing alloy and method for producing said alloy

A zirconium-based alloy for the components of the active core of nuclear reactors comprises (on a weight percent basis): niobium, 0.5-3.0; iron, 0.005-0.5; oxygen, 0.03-0.2; carbon, 0.001-0.04; silicon, 0.002-0.1; nickel, 0.003-0.02; zirconium being the balance; the alloy structure is characterized by an &agr;-solid solution and the &bgr; Nb-phase particles sized below 0.1 &mgr;m and having the niobium content of from 60 to 95%. The alloy may further comprise particles of intermetallics Zr&mdash;Fe&mdash;Nb with the Fe/Nb ratio of 0.05-0.2. The alloy structure may also be characterized by an oxygen-hardened &agr;-solid solution and by the &bgr; Nb-phase particles, and may further comprise particles of intermetallics Zr&mdash;Fe&mdash;Nb sized below 0.3 &mgr;m.

The present invention relates to a method for producing tubing products from binary and multicomponent zircon alloys, consisting in obtaining from an ingot previously submitted to a beta distortion process p source preparation, hot forming said source preparation at the subsistence temperature of zirconium alpha&plus;beta to get a tubular blank hardenning the latter at a temperature higher by 30 to 60&deg; to the temperature at which the alloy passes from an intermediary state zirconium alpha&plus;beta to the beta state of zirconium, mechanically processing, following by a tempering process at the subsistence temperature of alpha zirconium until the finished product is obtained, the cold distortion of the tubular product being effected with the following global stretching: &mgr; >100 for the finished products and &mgr; <50 for the TREX or SUPER TREX-type semi-finished tubular products, whereby at the first stage of the cold distortion the stretching &mgr;<2.0, &mgr;&equals;S /S (where S is the cross-sectional surface of the product before the milling process and S is the cross-sectional surface of the laminated tube) and &mgr;&equals;S /S (where S is the cross-sectional surface of the blank before the first milling process and S is the cross-sectional surface of the finished tube after the last milling process).

This invention relates to the plastic metal working, particularly to tube rolling production and can be applied for tube cold pilgering on rolling machines.
