A downhole tool for use in wellbores comprises a layer of hydrophobic material over a body, wherein the layer of hydrophobic material comprises a transition metal boride having a higher hydrophobicity than the body. The downhole tool may comprise a body having a composition and the layer of hydrophobic material comprising a discontinuous phase of the transition metal binder dispersed within a first continuous phase comprising a metal binder. The layer of material may be chemically bonded to the body. An interface between the body and the layer of material may comprise the transition metal boride dispersed within a second continuous phase comprising the metal binder and the composition of the body. Methods of forming downhole tools include forming such a layer of material at a surface of a body of a downhole tool.

Downhole tools having hydrophobic coatings, and methods of manufacturing such tools

A method of boriding a metal comprises forming a molten electrolyte comprising between about five weight percent and about fifty weight percent boron oxide, and contacting at least a portion of a metal with the molten electrolyte. Electrical current is applied to at least a portion of the metal while maintaining a temperature of the molten electrolyte below about 700&#xb0; C. to diffuse boron atoms from the molten electrolyte into a surface of the at least a portion of the metal. A downhole tool including at least one borided component is also disclosed.

A method of forming a down-hole tool comprises contacting at least a portion of at least one down-hole structure comprising at least one ceramic-metal composite material with a molten electrolyte comprising sodium tetraborate. Electrical current is applied to at least a portion of the at least one down-hole structure to form at least one borided down-hole structure comprising at least one metal boride material. Other methods of forming a down-hole tool, and a down-hole tool are also described.

Methods of forming borided down hole tools

A method of increasing a roughness of coiled tubing injector blocks that includes providing a pair of gripper blocks each having a gripper surface configured to grip coiled tubing within an injector head and increasing a first roughness on the gripping surfaces to a second roughness. A coating may be applied to the gripping surfaces to increase the roughness. The coating may be chromium carbide, molybdenum boride, iron boride, titanium boride, or a transitional metal boride. The gripping surfaces may be treated to increase the roughness to a second roughness. The gripping surfaces may be blasted by abrasives or shot peened to increase the roughness. The second roughness may be greater than 20 &#x3bc;m. A system to inject coiled tubing into a wellbore may include an injector head, coiled tubing, and at least two gripper blocks having a gripping surface with a roughness of at least 20 &#x3bc;m.

A method of forming a downhole tool comprises contacting at least one downhole structure comprising at least one metal material with a molten electrolyte comprising anhydrous sodium tetraborate. Methods of forming borided down-hole tools

A composite includes a porous matrix that includes a molybdenum-silicon-boron (Mo&#x2014;Si&#x2014;B) alloy that has a plurality of pores with a lubricant in contact with the Mo&#x2014;Si&#x2014;B alloy, a hydrophobic compound in contact with the Mo&#x2014;Si&#x2014;B alloy, or a combination thereof. A method for preparing a porous composite includes disposing a porous matrix comprising a Mo&#x2014;Si&#x2014;B alloy on a substrate, the Mo&#x2014;Si&#x2014;B alloy comprising a plurality of pores; disposing a lubricant on a surface of the porous matrix; and disposing a hydrophobic compound on a surface of the porous matrix to form the porous composite.
