A hybrid controller for controlling a hybrid vehicle is set forth. The hybrid vehicle has an engine, an electric motor and an engine controller determining a crankshaft torque. The hybrid controller includes an optimization module determining an electric motor torque, determining an engine torque and communicating the engine torque from the hybrid controller to the engine controller. The hybrid controller also includes a motor control module controlling the electric motor based on the electric motor torque.

Method and system for controlling a hybrid vehicle

An axle torque control system includes an axle torque request module that receives an axle torque request and that selectively outputs the axle torque request. An axle torque conversion module receives the axle torque request and converts the axle torque request to an engine torque request. A rate limit module receives the engine torque request and a pedal engine torque request and selectively adjusts the engine torque request based on the pedal engine torque request.

Axle torque based cruise control

An engine control system comprises a pedal torque determination module, a driver interpretation module, and an actuation module. The pedal torque determination module determines a zero pedal torque based on a desired engine torque at a zero accelerator pedal position and a minimum torque limit for an engine system. The driver interpretation module determines a driver pedal torque based on the zero pedal torque and an accelerator pedal position. The actuation module controls at least one of a throttle area, spark timing, and a fuel command based on the driver pedal torque.

Method to include fast torque actuators in the driver pedal scaling for conventional powertrains

An engine system includes a throttle actuator module and a torque control module. The throttle actuator module controls a throttle actuator based on a desired throttle area. The torque control module determines an actuator torque. The torque control module determines a rate limited torque, a maximum torque, and a minimum torque based on the actuator torque and a predetermined rate of change. The torque control module determines the desired throttle area based on the actuator torque when the rate limited torque is greater than the maximum torque. The torque control module determines the desired throttle area based on the actuator torque when the rate limited torque is less than the minimum torque.

Securing throttle area in a coordinated torque control system

An engine control module comprises a torque control module, an engine speed (RPM) control module, and an actuator module. The torque control module determines a first desired torque based on a requested torque. The RPM control module selectively determines a second desired torque based on a desired RPM. The torque control module determines the first desired torque further based on the second desired torque when the engine control module is transitioning from an RPM control mode to a torque control mode. The RPM control module determines the second desired torque further based on the first desired torque when the engine control module is transitioning from the torque control mode to the RPM control mode. The actuator module controls an actuator of an engine based on the first and second desired torques.

A method and control module for controlling an engine includes a requested torque module that generates a requested torque and a maximum toque capacity module that determines a maximum torque capacity corresponding to a maximum torque capacity of the engine. A launch trim torque threshold determination module determines a launch trim torque threshold. A comparison module that compares the requested torque and the launch trim torque threshold. An output module that applies a fast rate limit to the requested torque up to the launch trim threshold when the requested torque is less than the launch trim torque threshold and a shower rate limited torque request when the requested torque is greater than the launch trim torque threshold.

A control system for a vehicle includes a first counter that indicates a first count of a number of cylinders of an engine of the vehicle that are fueled. A second counter indicates a second count of the number of cylinders that are fueled. A control module determines a secure count based on the first count and the second count. A system for detecting contamination of an air filter for an internal combustion engine includes an air pressure sensor disposed downstream of the air filter, an air flow sensor disposed in an air intake system of the engine, and a control module in communication with the air pressure sensor and the air flow sensor. The control module is configured to estimate an atmospheric pressure based on a signal received from the air pressure sensor. The control module is further configured to determine a contamination level of the air filter based on an air flow rate provided by the air flow sensor and a pressure drop across the air filter based on a pressure difference between the estimated atmospheric pressure and a second pressure measurement from the air pressure sensor that corresponds to the provided air flow rate.

A controller estimates a temperature of a catalytic converter in a vehicle and determines an engine speed. The controller shuts off fuel to the engine if the estimated temperature is greater than a maximum temperature of the catalytic converter and the engine speed is greater than a maximum engine speed. If the estimated catalytic converter temperature is greater than the maximum temperature, the controller delays a spark retard request to the engine. The controller updates vehicle torque with an integral torque if an RPM error is within an RPM error range and vehicle speed is less than a maximum vehicle speed for a first period. The controller increases torque to the engine by a proportional torque if an RPM error is within an RPM error range to prevent engine stall. The controller updates the integral torque when the RPM error is within an RPM error range for a first period.

Apparatus and method for electronic throttle control power management enhancements

A diagnostic apparatus is suitable for use in an automobile controller and includes a power supply terminal conducting a reference voltage, a sampling circuit and a reference voltage diagnostic circuit. The sampling circuit is coupled to the power supply terminal and has an output terminal for providing sampled values of the reference voltage. The reference voltage diagnostic circuit has an input terminal coupled to the output terminal of the sampling circuit. The reference voltage diagnostic circuit maintains a historical value of the reference voltage over a predetermined time period, compares a current sampled value of the reference voltage to the historical value, and indicates a fault in the reference voltage in response to the current sampled value being different from the historical value by more than a predetermined threshold.

Reference voltage diagnostic suitable for use in an automobile controller and method therefor

Methods and apparatus are provided for ensuring that a throttle increase accompanying a change in the number of active cylinders of an internal combustion engine will not occur too long with more than a selected fraction of all the cylinders activated, so as to not startle a driver. The apparatus comprises an electronic controller that generates the throttle increase if less than all the cylinders are requested to be activated. A determination is made as to whether the number of cylinders being fueled is equal to or less than the selected fraction. A timer is started if the number of cylinders being fueled is greater than the selected fraction. The throttle increase is turned off if the amount of time measured by the timer exceeds a threshold before the number of cylinders being fueled becomes either less than or equal to the selected fraction.

Methods and apparatus for providing security for electronically-controlled cylinder activation and deactivation

A method and apparatus for determining the mass air flow into an internal combustion engine without the use of a mass air flow sensor. Speed density and throttle position methods of estimating mass air flow are combined using a first Kalman filter. In one aspect of the invention, the input throttle position into the throttle position mass air flow estimate is the measured throttle position obtained from the throttle position sensor. In another aspect of the invention, the input throttle position into the throttle position mass air flow estimate is the output of a second Kalman filter, which uses as its inputs the measured throttle position obtained from the throttle position sensor and the desired throttle position obtained from the pedal position sensor.

Elimination of mass air flow sensor using stochastic estimation techniques

A multiple state automotive data storage and analysis procedure in which vehicle operating parameters are continuously logged in a first state while monitoring the vehicle operating condition for occurrence of any of a predetermined set of trigger conditions. Upon occurrence of any of the predetermined set of trigger conditions, logging operations are suspended and confirmation of occurrence of any of a predetermined set of storage conditions occurs in a second state. If such occurrence is confirmed, a third state is entered in which the logged parameter values are transferred to more permanent memory devices for off-line analysis thereof. If such occurrence is not confirmed, operations of the first state are resumed.

A driver override of a cruise control system is detected and employed to suitably alter the powertrain controls. A driver override of the cruise control system is detected by a lack of correspondence between the engine throttle position and the cruise control servo position, taking into account any hysteresis and lash which may occur in the linkage coupling the servo to the throttle. The lash is determined by storing the measured servo position whenever the measured throttle position is equal to a predefined value, and the controller responds during a detected driver override by instituting normal or noncruise related control parameters. This control permits the cruise control parameters to yield smooth control without unnecessary shifting while retaining a more responsive control during driver override conditions.
