The central unit (14) comprises a distortion sampler (16) including a spectral sound analyzer and a memory for recording the digital data of at least one reference sound. The central unit by means of the analyzer analyzes a sequence of such sounds which are received by way of the telephone line (11, 13) and makes a comparison with the recorded data. It thus produces a measurement of the frequency response of the transmission, that is to say distortion and attenuation introduced by the telephone connection, in accordance with the various frequencies. The data of that measurement are used by the central unit (14) to compensate for the signals which are successively received by way of the activated telephone connection. The system comprises a portable acoustic device (35) in which the digital data of the reference sound are recorded. That device may be connected to any telephone apparatus (12) of the network and comprises a manual control for triggering transmission to the central unit (14) of the sequence of reference sounds after the telephone connection has been established by means of the telephone apparatus (12 ). The portable device (35) may also have a recording of a code for identifying the user, for example, for use in a vocal postal system. In addition in a system in which the central unit (14) comprises a voice recognition device (17) the portable device (35) may have the recording of a series of phonetic prototypes, or phonemes, which are specific to the particular user, to be transferred to the central unit to improve the quality of recognition of the speech transmitted thereby. Alternatively the phonemes of different users may be recorded in a memory of the central unit (14) and be selected thereby on the basis of identification code.

System for measuring and automatically compensating for the distorsions

The method consists in analyzing phonemes of the phonetic signal at regular intervals of time, comparing the phonemes with a series of reference phonemes, selecting the reference phoneme closest to the phoneme of the phonetic signal and generating a visible indication of the selected phoneme in real time on a monitor (20) to allow the speaker to adapt his speech to the response of the apparatus. The apparatus comprises a series of analyzers (A.sub.1, A.sub.2 . . . A.sub.n) for a phonetic signal segment for generating a series of vectors (V) to be compared by a set (13) of comparators (C.sub.1, C.sub.2 . . . C.sub.m) with a plurality of reference vectors corresponding to the various reference phonemes. A control unit (19) receiving the result of the comparison controls the visual display on the monitor (20) of a histogram indicating the selected phoneme and also a merit value (P) and a stability value (ST), of the recognition. A lexical recognition unit (22) is adapted to link individual phonemes together to recognize words and to display the words on the monitor (20).

Method and apparatus for the phonetic recognition of words

A text processing system comprises a keyboard, a printing unit, a display unit having the capacity of displaying up to a line of entered text and a control unit which updates the display unit upon each entry of a character from the keyboard, and enables the printing unit to print the last entered line upon reception of an end of line signal from the keyboard. An auxiliary buffer is provided for storing the line last entered via the keyboard. The keyboard includes a line preceding key operative during entry of a line on the keyboard for conditioning the display unit to display at least a portion of the line of text stored in the auxiliary buffer.

Text processing system for displaying and editing a line of text

A textual processing system having a keyboard for entering textual information and for conditioning the system into a plurality of modes of operation including a search mode. The system also includes a record unit for recording and reading out textual information, on and from, respectively; a record medium; a printing unit for printing textual information; a display unit for displaying textual information; and a control unit connected to the above units. The control unit, during the search mode of operation, controls the record unit and the display unit for searching a group of textual information, entered from the keyboard, among the textual information stored on the record medium. The control unit displays the group of textual information entered from the keyboard and displays a predetermined fixed portion of the textual information containing the group of textual information found by the search. The group of textual information can be a reference word identifying the beginning of the particular text of the textual information stored on the record medium, a character identifying the end of the paragraph, or a group of words which are consecutive words of the stored text.

Textual processing system utilizing display aided associative searching

An automatic text processing system, wherein a text is printed by a typewriter and simultaneously recorded line by line in corresponding blocks of a magnetic tape. The system automatically prints the address of the block in which each line is stored, whereby an operator can cause the system to print selected lines of the text by posting the corresponding addresses on the typewriter. The lines or paragraphs of a text can be cancelled or added and their succession can be changed, by posting the addresses of the lines which are to be cancelled, added or shifted in the text. The fair copy is then automatically printed with the lines justified according to a format selected by the operator. According to another embodiment the system can be used to automatically search the information recorded on the magnetic tape.

A magnetic information recording and reading device is embodied in an electronic equipment for the data processing. On a plurality of parallel tracks of a magnetic tape are recorded information blocks aligned at the starting point so as to form a matrix of information blocks. Each column of information blocks is addressable by a corresponding address recorded in a further track of the tape. Each address block comprises a timing character sequence for the addressing of an information block and for synchronizing the reading and/or the recording of data. The energization of a recording head is controlled by the readinng of timing character included in the corresponding address block so that the recording starting point of each of the information blocks are perfectly aligned independently from the speed of the tape.
