System and method for optically verified sample authentication are described herein. An example system includes a detection device to authenticate a sample and to return a positive authentication result if the sample is authentic and return a negative authentication result if the sample is not authentic, the detection device containing an optical emitter to emit a series of pulses of light in a first sequential pattern, a smartphone in close proximity to and facing the detection device and the sample, the smartphone containing a camera to detect the first sequential pattern of light, and a database to store data from the smartphone, wherein the optical emitter emits the first sequential pattern of light before the detection device authenticates the sample, the smartphone captures a first image of the detection device after the smartphone detects the first sequential pattern of light emitted by the optical emitter, and the smartphone transmits first data to the database after the detection device authenticates the sample.

A system to authenticate and identify items is described herein. An example apparatus includes an illuminating source to illuminate a sample with a first emission of light having a peak wavelength at a first wavelength and a second emission of light having a peak wavelength at a second wavelength, a photo element to detect a first optical response emitted by the sample after the first emission of light and to detect a second optical response emitted by the sample after the second emission of light, and an identifier to identify the sample based on the first optical response and the second optical response.

An example method includes illuminating a first phosphor layer on a substrate with light having a first wavelength, wherein the first phosphor layer has luminescent properties such that when it is illuminated by light having the first wavelength, it emits light having a second wavelength, the first phosphor layer is divided into a first two-dimensional grid of cells arranged in a first spatial pattern, wherein each cell of the first phosphor layer corresponds to one bit of an identification code, a first portion of the first phosphor layer is removed from a first number of cells of the first two-dimensional grid of cells to expose the substrate for the first number of cells, capturing a first image of the light emitted by the first phosphor layer having the second wavelength, determining whether the first phosphor layer is authentic based on the first image, and determining the identification code based on the first image.

A luminescent infrared transparent sticker is disclosed herein. An example apparatus includes a substrate that is transparent with respect to light at a first wavelength and light at a second wavelength and an adhesive on a first side of the substrate, wherein the adhesive contains taggant that has luminescent properties such that when the taggant is illuminated with light at the first wavelength, it emits light at the second wavelength.

An example method includes emitting first electromagnetic radiation having a first wavelength through a first end of a tube for a first duration of time, the tube being filled with a liquid and a dye diluted in the liquid to a first concentration, ceasing the emission of the first electromagnetic radiation for a second duration of time following the first duration of time, detecting a first strength of second electromagnetic radiation emitted by a luminophor coated on a screen at a second end of the tube at the conclusion of the second duration of time, the luminophor having luminescent properties such that the first electromagnetic radiation causes the luminophor to emit the second electromagnetic radiation having a second wavelength, wherein the second electromagnetic radiation is partially absorbed by the dye and the amount of the second electromagnetic radiation absorbed by the dye depends on the first concentration, and determining the first concentration based on the first strength.
