A blood filter device having occlusion-resistant characteristics. The occlusion-resistant characteristics decrease the likelihood of the filter being blocked by thrombi. The filter device includes at least one anchor portion for anchoring the filter device within one or more arteries, and a filter portion for filtering thrombi from the blood entering the artery. In some embodiments, an anchor portion is capped with a filter cap. In various embodiments, the filter cap is protrudes into the aorta to promote occlusion resistance. In one embodiment, the device can be modified in situ to re-establish normal blood flow through the artery in the unlikely case of thrombotic or other blockage of the filter. In some embodiments, a bypass opening or open channel defining an access port is provided to accommodate passage of surgical instruments into the artery and to enable blood flow to bypass the filter should the filter become heavily occluded.

A medical device for ablating tissues within a heart chamber comprising a guiding member intended to be introduced in the oesophagus of the patient and an ablating member comprising an ablation electrode mounted at the distal end or tip of catheter. Both the head of the guiding member and the tip of the ablating member are magnetised and can enter into magnetic coupling when their distal ends are brought in close contact. Once the magnetic coupling is achieved, the tip of the ablating member is guided by moving the guiding member. The guiding member can include sensors enabling to monitor physiological parameters during the intervention.

The catheter is guided along a blood vessel of a patient by the bipolar electrode functioning as a mobile sensor on the catheter tip connected to the electronic unit to monitor the advance of the catheter and determine any modification of successive signals received from the bipolar electrode in order to detect any deviation of the catheter tip from the required path along the blood vessel and to deliver control signals comprising a GO signal, a STOP signal or an END signal to respectively enable, interrupt or terminate the advance of the catheter. The bipolar electrode moreover serves to verify the contact of the catheter tip with the wall of the heart cavity of the patient by creating impulses and detecting the appearance of corresponding induced signals on a surface cardiogram of the patient. The combination of the bipolar electrode on the catheter with the electronic unit provides a portable catheterization system particularly suitable for performing urgent cardiac catheterizations outside hospitals.

The invention relates to a radially expandable multi-layer tubular structure which is intended to be used as a stent and to the production method thereof. The inventive structure comprises an outer layer () and an inner layer () which are solidly connected to one another. One of the aforementioned layers () is provided with hollow channels () through the thickness thereof while the other layer is provided with perforations (). Said channels () can be used to alter the mechanical properties of the stent and to house a medicament for the local treatment of the vessel in which the stent is disposed.

Expandable multi-layer tubular structure and production method thereof

The balloon catheter comprises a catheter tube surrounded distally by an elongated inflatable balloon. Throughout the catheter tube is a longitudinal lumen for positioning a radioactive radiation emitter within the balloon. The catheter comprises a second lumen for directing inflation fluid into the balloon. Belt means creating a waist are mounted on the balloon to squeeze it down to nearly the diameter of the catheter thereby leaving a small passage for the inflation fluid. The belt means divide the balloon into sections to assure a close center fit of the catheter within the balloon.

A system for intravascular ionizing radiation therapy including a radiation device and a guide wire having radiopaque markers to facilitate precise repositioning of the radiation source along the length of the treatment site. The radiopaque markers are separated by a distance L, which corresponds to the distance between the 50% dose points in the dose fall-off regions. This produces partial dose overlap when the radioactive source is positioned in tandem adjacent each radiopaque marker. Preferably, only the dose fall-off regions overlap thereby providing more uniform and complete radiation exposure along the length of the treatment site.

System and method for intravascular ionizing tandem radiation therapy

A prepared catheter for intraluminal treatment of a vessel section with ionizing radiation, which catheter has an elongate shaft with a proximal end and distal end as percutaneous transluminal access to the vessel section, an inflatable balloon at the distal end of the shaft, and inflation lumen which runs through the shaft and opens into the balloon, and a source of ionizing radiation which can be positioned in the balloon, and which catheter is filled with a gas for applying pressure to the balloon. In this way, only a comparatively small proportion of the ionizing radiation is absorbed and rendered ineffective as it passes through the gas, and the intended dose of radiation can be administered within a short treatment time. The inflation lumen preferably has, along the greater part of the length lying within the patient's body during treatment, a cross-sectional area having a value in mm,not greater than the balloon in mm,divided by 1200. In this way, a reduction in the overall profile of the catheter is achieved while at the same time retaining the desired deflation times for the balloon.
