An embodiment provides a method for deriving an alkalinity measurement, including: introducing a fluid sample; measuring, a phosphate amount of the fluid sample using a colorimetric reagent; measuring a pH of the fluid sample, wherein the pH of the fluid sample correlates to a hydroxide amount of the fluid sample; introducing an acid to convert all the inorganic carbon to carbon dioxide; applying a positive potential to the SP3 substituted carbon electrode; introducing, prior to or substantially simultaneously during the application of the positive potential to the SP3 substituted carbon electrode and in the reaction chamber, at least one acid reagent comprising a metallic catalyst that converts the carbonate and the partially oxidized species to carbon dioxide; determining total organic carbon by detecting an amount of carbon dioxide produced by the oxidation; determining the total organic carbon from the oxidation of the organic carbon species, and determining a derived alkalinity based upon the phosphate amount, the hydroxide amount, and the amount of carbon dioxide generated from the inorganic carbon. Derived alkalinity

An embodiment provides a method for digesting at least one analyte of an aqueous sample, including: introducing an aqueous sample comprising at least one analyte into a digestion device comprising one or more carbon substituted material electrodes; digesting the at least one analyte by applying an electrical potential between an anode and a cathode of the digestion device, wherein the digesting comprises a step-wise disintegration; measuring the at least one analyte of the aqueous sample from the digested material, using a measurement device selected from the group consisting of: an electrochemical device and an optical measurement device; and modifying the electrical potential based upon the measurement of the at least one analyte. An embodiment provides a method of forecasting water quality deterioration in a water distribution system, including: receiving, at an electronic device, a data set comprising measured values of a plurality of components within the water distribution system; determining, based upon algorithmic analysis of the measured values, a water quality index; and providing, based on the determined water quality index, a recommendation to mitigate water quality deterioration in the water distribution system. An embodiment provides a method for real-time management of analyte recovery within a system for measuring at least one parameter of a fluid within the system by monitoring signals from the system against a set of conditions, the method including: receiving, from the system, signals providing information regarding the system, wherein the system includes at least one reagent flowing into the system and recovers analytes within the fluid, wherein the analytes provide an indication of a value of the at least one parameter; identifying, by analyzing the signals, whether the analyte recovery of the system is meeting the set of conditions identifying a desired analyte recovery of the system; and modifying, based upon the analyte recovery not meeting the set of conditions, conditions of the system for recovery of the analyte, wherein the modifying includes adjusting at least one parameter of the system.

An embodiment provides a method for compensating for inteferants in measurement of alkalinity in a reagent-less system, including: introducing an aqueous sample into a measurement device comprising one or more series of electrodes; applying an electrical signal to the aqueous sample using the one or more series of electrodes, wherein the electrical signal is selected from the group consisting of: current and voltage; identifying, during application of the electrical signal, that the electrical signal reaches an oxidation threshold and measuring, prior to reaching the oxidation threshold, a first electrical response to the electrical signal, the first electrical response attributable to interferants in the aqueous sample; identifying, during application of the electrical signal, that the electrical signal reaches an endpoint and measuring, from the oxidation threshold to the endpoint, a second electrical response to the electrical signal; and measuring an alkalinity of the aqueous sample based upon a difference between the first electrical response and the second electrical response. An embodiment provides a method for real-time management of device maintenance utilizing quality metrics defined based upon inputs of the device, the method including: receiving inputs corresponding to a particular device, wherein the particular device provides measurements of a parameter of a fluid; generating, from the inputs, quality metrics for and unique to the particular device; monitoring the particular device while the particular device is deployed, wherein the monitoring occurs in view of the quality metrics; and triggering, responsive to detecting information corresponding to the particular device is violating at least one of the quality metrics, a notification to a user to perform an action corresponding to the particular device.

An embodiment provides a method for oxidizing organic carbon, including: introducing, in a reaction chamber of a total organic carbon analyzer, a fluid sample comprising organic carbon, wherein the reaction chamber includes an electrochemical cell and wherein the electrochemical cell comprises an SP3 substituted solid carbon electrode doped with a conductivity elevating composition; applying, using a generator, a positive potential to the SP3 substituted carbon electrode, the positive potential being sufficient to oxidize organics in the fluid sample to produce carbonate and partially oxidized organics; introducing, in the reaction chamber, at least one acid reagent comprising a metallic catalyst, prior to or substantially simultaneously during the application of the positive potential to the SP3 substituted carbon electrode, that converts the carbonate and the partially oxidized species to carbon dioxide; and detecting, using at least one detector, the carbon dioxide produced by the oxidation. A method for determination of an unknown analyte using quantitative electrochemical generation of a detectable species, which provides specified quantities of the species, is described. As an example, free chlorine concentration measurements may be performed using N,N-Diethyl-p-phenylenediamine (DPD), or N,N-bis(2,4-di-sulfobenzyl)toluidinetetrasodium salt (SBT), for obtaining an in-situ calibration curve, whereby matrix effects are eliminated.

A carbon quantifying cell configured to receive a fluid is provided, including two or more electrodes positioned at least partially in the fluid, and meter electronics configured to place an electrical oxidization, polarization, and/or adsorption program across the two or more electrodes and at least partially oxidize carbon materials in the fluid, apply an AC voltage of a predetermined amplitude across the two or more electrodes, measuring the resulting AC current across the two or more electrodes, wherein a ratio of amplitudes and a phase angle difference provides information for calculating a fluid impedance, receive an electrical response of the fluid to the electrical oxidization, polarization, and/or adsorption program, quantify the carbon materials in the fluid using the electrical response, and detect interfering materials in the fluid using the fluid impedance.
