Techniques for selectively updating regions of a display are disclosed. In the illustrative embodiment, a display engine of a computing device sends messages to a display to update particular update regions of the display. As not the entire frame is sent, sending only the update regions can save bandwidth and power. In the illustrative embodiment, some of the update regions for a frame sent to the display may be compressed and some of the update regions for the frame may be uncompressed. Due to overhead in the compression, sending small update regions uncompressed may reduce the bandwidth and/or power used.

An example apparatus include a display panel, a display controller to adjust an image to be displayed by the display panel, and a power savings controller to access an image provided to the display controller, execute a machine learning model using the image as an input to generate an aggressiveness value, and provide the aggressiveness value to the display controller, the display controller to adjust the image based on the aggressiveness value.

Wireless display sharing with dynamic resolution switching

Technology for a display controller is described. The display controller can detect a frame update when the display controller is in a dynamic sleep state. The display controller can wake up from the dynamic sleep state and enter a selective update state at a programmed vertical blanking interrupt (VBI) that precedes an actual VBI. The display controller can perform a scan-out with a display panel during the selective update state. The display controller can return to the dynamic sleep state in a same time frame after the scan-out is completed. The display controller can exclude timing logic to send a VBI at every time frame to the display panel to maintain time synchronization between the display controller and the display panel.

Display pixels having integrated memory are disclosed. A disclosed example memory pixel includes a light emitter on a semiconductor substrate, memory co-located with the light emitter on the same semiconductor substrate, and a comparator in circuit with the memory, the comparator to control a flow of electrical current to the light emitter based on pixel data from the memory and timing information.

Example smart panel display apparatus and related methods are disclosed herein. An example apparatus to control a display of an electronic device includes a user presence detector to determine a presence of a user relative to the device based on image data generated by an image sensor of the device. The example apparatus includes a gaze detector to determine a direction of a gaze of the user relative to the image sensor based on the image data. The example apparatus includes a backlight manager to selectively adjust a display brightness based on the presence of the user and the direction of the gaze of the user.

Smart display panel apparatus and related methods

Microphones are located between pixel display elements (e.g., micro-LEDs and OLEDs) in a display. Display-integrated microphones allow displays to have thinner bezels. Audio processing components can also be incorporated into the display and allow audio processing offloading from processors external to the display. Arrays of microphones allow for the beamforming of received audio signals to enhance the detection of sound from remote audio sources. Piezoelectric elements can also be integrated into a display to allow for localized haptic feedback. Integrated piezoelectric elements can act as speakers and beamforming techniques can be used to activate sets of piezoelectric elements in coordination to direct sound to a specific location external to the display. Piezoelectric elements can aid in display thermal management by creating acoustic waves to move heated air within a display to create a more uniform thermal profile within the display or to remove excess heat from the display.

Haptics and microphone display integration

A lid controller hub (LCH) comprising processing components located in the lid of a mobile computing device, such as a laptop, processes sensor data generated by input sensors (microphones, cameras, touchscreen) and provides for improved and enhanced experiences over existing devices. For example, the LCH provides hardened privacy and the synchronization of touch display activities with the display refresh rate, the latter providing for a smoother and more responsive touch experience over existing designs. The LCH enables continuous gestures comprising touch gesture and in-air gesture portions as well as multi-plane gestures in which an initial touch gesture places the device into a mode or context in which it recognizes and acts upon subsequent in-air gestures. Touch operations of a mobile computing device can be based on user presence, user engagement, and a level of user interaction with the device.

Techniques for selective display frame fetching are disclosed. Some example techniques disclosed herein cause at least one processor to at least determine if an indication of a new frame includes an indication of a flip event, and identify one or more dirty regions of the new frame based on the flip event. Disclosed example techniques also cause the at least one processor to fill a display buffer with the one or more dirty regions of the new frame, scan out the one or more dirty regions of the new frame from the display buffer to a display port, and apply an adaptive contrast and backlight enhancement based on a histogram of changes in the new frame.

Particular embodiments described herein provide for an electronic device that includes a display and is configured enabling a low power refresh during a semi-active workload. The electronic device includes a display engine, where the display engine generates a video stream with a frame rate, a display, where the display includes an image viewable by a user and the image is refreshed at a first refresh rate, and a timing controller located in the display, where the timing control receives an indicator from the display engine and uses the indicator to determine that the first refresh rate can be lowered to a second refresh rate without the frame rate of the video stream from the display engine being changed. In an example, the indicator is frame with no image data at the start of the frame. In another example, the indicator is an implicit indictor sent by the display engine.

Methods, apparatus, systems and articles of manufacture to reduce power consumption and improve battery life of display systems using adaptive sync are disclosed. An example apparatus includes an interface to transmit frame data to a sink device, the frame data generated by a processor; a timer to initiate in response to the transmission of the frame data to the sink device; and the interface to transmit a low power indication to the sink device after the timer reaches a threshold amount of time.
