An enhanced Session Initiation Protocol ('SIP') registration message having extended header information that is used by an Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem ('IMS') core to determine the registration status of a mobile device and the physical location of the mobile device. The extended header information includes hardware and subscriber identifiers, such as an International Mobile Equipment Identity ('IMEI') and International Mobile Subscriber Identity (&#x201c;IMSI&#x201d;). The IMS core queries an equipment identity register to validate IMEI/IMSI identifiers in the header to determine whether to deny registration to a mobile device. The IMS core also queries a capability database using an IMEI to determine which location determination techniques are supported by or suitable for the associated mobile device.

Enhanced registration messages in internet protocol multimedia subsystems

An E-CSCF receives a Session Initiation Protocol ('SIP') invitation message initiating an emergency communication session from a calling device. The E-CSCF generates an information request message based on the received SIP message and sends the information request message to a location server. The location server determines a geographical location of the calling device and uses the geographical location to determine a destination emergency response center, such as a Public Safety Access Point (PSAP). The location server provides location information for the destination PSAP to the E-CSCF. The E-CSCF generates a modified SIP invitation message using the presence information and sends the modified SIP invitation message to an emergency services network where it is routed to the emergency response center.

System and method for providing emergency service in an IP-based wireless network

The extended header information includes hardware and subscriber identifiers, such as an International Mobile Equipment Identity (&#x201c;IMEI&#x201d;) and International Mobile Subscriber Identity (&#x201c;IMSI&#x201d;). The IMS core also queries a capability database using an IMEI to determine which location determination techniques are supported by or suitable for the associated mobile device.

A user location is estimated based on an IP address assigned to the user's device/equipment during registration for multimedia application services that are provided over the IP multimedia subsystems (IMS) network. The latitude and longitude information of the user location is obtained based on the IP address assigned to the user device/equipment. Such information is used to determine an appropriate server(s) for establishing an IP multimedia service session. In some embodiments, a closely located IMS server(s) is selected for proxying, interrogating, providing or delivering IP multimedia services. In this manner, each user device/equipment communicates with IMS servers that are located close to the user and thus, the geographically distributed load among the IMS gateway servers can be achieved.

Location-based IMS server selection

Techniques for propagating communication awareness for communication sessions are described. In at least some embodiments, a communication session refers to an exchange of communication media between different communication endpoints. According to various embodiments, communication awareness of a communication session is propagated among various autonomous networks involved in routing the communication session. Communication awareness, for instance, is propagated out-of-band from a data stream that carries the communication session.

Propagating communication awareness for communication sessions

Prior reservation of bandwidth is enabled during conference setup. Through synchronization of directory databases at one or more multi-modal communication application deployment sites and use of a multi-modal communication enabled node at an evolved packet core (EPC), bandwidth is statically or dynamically allocated for communication sessions based on requesting user profile, requested modality, location of the user, and similar factors such that a desired Quality of Service (QoS) is maintained during the communication session. Service Providers (SPs) provide differentiated QoS by pre-reserving bandwidth margin over and above what is required. The bandwidth margin is used by the SPs to include additional error correction mechanism. Dynamic bandwidth allocation factors in the location of the UC devices and roaming status.

Multi-modal communication priority over wireless networks

A location mapping service ('LMS') that allows the integrations of an IMS core with the location-based billing methods of a legacy core network. The LMS uses the estimated location of a mobile device during an IMS session in order to determine a Cell Global Identification ('CGI') to associate with the session. The LMS then provides the determined CGI to the legacy core network, so that a billing gateway may determine the billing region to associate with the IMS session. The LMS thereby facilitates location-based billing for IMS sessions in the absence of actual CGI information.
