One or more embodiments of the invention relates to a method of managing data in a cluster. The method includes receiving, by a global event manager of the cluster, a notification that an event has occurred on the cluster, wherein the cluster comprises a plurality of file system redirector proxy (FSRP) nodes. In response to the notification, the global event manager performs a load balancing analysis on the cluster to assign an export location of a file system export to a FSRP node of the plurality of FSRP nodes, and notifying each of the plurality of FSRP nodes in the cluster of the event, wherein the notifying results in an update of a global export table of each of the plurality of FSRP nodes of the assigning of the export location to the FSRP node.

Scaling and distributing namespaces and clients across multiple file system redirector proxies

A client-side deduplication library receives from a backup application at a client a job request for a file-copy operation involving one or more files managed by a backup server. A server-initiated communication channel is established between the backup server and client-side deduplication library. A callback from the backup application specifying one or more types of status updates that the application wishes to receive is registered. The backup server is directed to start a job for the file-copy operation. A status update on the job is received over the server-initiated communication channel without having to prompt the backup server for the status update. If the status update is of the type that the backup application wishes to receive, the callback is called to notify the backup application of the status update. If not, the callback is not called.

Providing status notifications of file-copy operations to backup clients

A database manager maintains a database including information tracking a set of storage units and a set of storage appliances on which the storage units currently reside. At least a portion of the tracking information is cached in a server cache at a namespace redirection server. Some of the tracking information is cached in a set of client caches at a set of clients. A request to access a storage unit is received at a client. A lookup is made into a client cache at the client to find a storage appliance having the storage unit. A determination is made that there is a problem accessing the storage unit using the client cache. So, the namespace redirection server is queried for updated tracking information concerning a location of the storage unit. The client assists the namespace redirection server with management of the server cache.

Capacity-based redirection efficiency and resiliency

Information is stored that maps storage units to a pool of data protection appliances on which the storage units reside. The stored information includes a set of Internet Protocol (IP) addresses through which each data protection appliance can be reached. A connection request is received from a client. The connection request includes an identification of a particular storage unit which the client seeks to access for a data protection job. The particular storage unit is looked up in the stored information to identify a particular data protection appliance on which the particular storage unit currently resides. A list of multiple IP addresses through which the particular data protection appliance can be reached according to the stored information is returned to the client. The client, upon receipt of the list, selects an IP address from the list to attempt an initial connection to the particular data protection appliance.

Automatic selection of network path connecting backup clients to a pool of multiple backup storage appliances

A load balancing algorithm and cluster configuration details are stored at each of a set of namespace nodes of a cluster hosting a deduplicated file system. Upon a client connecting to a namespace node, a server-initiated communication channel is established between the namespace node and the client over which updates to the load balancing algorithm, cluster configuration details, or both are sent. The load balancing algorithm and cluster configuration details are sent to the client, thereby allowing the client to determine according to the load balancing algorithm and cluster configuration details, which particular namespace node should handle a particular file system operation. Thereafter, each connected client is immediately notified of changes to the cluster such as node or service additions or deletions or software upgrades to the cluster so that each client can use the updated information to conduct load balancing.

Offloading namespace redirection to backup clients in a scale out cluster

A method includes receiving, from a client and by a node, a commit request associated with a first datum, sending, in response to the commit request, a second commit request to a second node, wherein the second node comprises the first datum, after sending the second commit request, receiving a first cookie from the second node, making a first determination that the first cookie does not match a second cookie stored in a node cookie hash table, wherein the second cookie is associated with the second node, in response to the first determination, updating a master verifier cookie on the node to obtain an updated master verifier cookie, and sending the updated master verifier cookie to the client.
