An improved coating for optical fibers is described. The present invention is a dimensionally precise and uniform coating with low-porosity. The improved coating is applied via sputtering within a vacuum chamber. Environmental conditions are monitored within a cylindrical magnetron during sputtering. Sputtering is adjusted or temporarily ceased when environmental conditions approach a damage threshold. Sputtered particles within a plasma cloud are dimensionally similar and adhere to an optical fiber in a volume efficient arrangement forming a more precise, denser, and more adherent coating. Embodiments of the present invention provide improved pull strength by compressively constraining the optical fiber within the coating and by closing microcracks.

Coating for optical fibers

Method for fabricating a charge coupled device

An improved coating for optical fibers and a method for applying the improved coating are described. The present invention is a dimensionally precise and uniform coating with low-porosity. The improved coating is applied via sputtering within a vacuum chamber. Environmental conditions are monitored within a cylindrical magnetron during sputtering. Sputtering is adjusted or temporarily ceased when environmental conditions approach a damage threshold. Coating for optical fibers and method therefor

The present invention consists of a method and a structure formed by such method relating to optical fibers. Specifically, the invention consists of a chemical mill process for shaping the end of a fiber and thereby simultaneously forming both lens and precision mounting region. Also described is a self-aligning structure with integral lens. Both features improve light coupling. The lens focuses light energy entering and exiting the fiber. The precision mounting region facilitates alignment of fiber at couplings.

A display as for images and/or information comprises a plurality of light-emitting fibers disposed in side-by-side arrangement to define a viewing surface. Each light-emitting fiber includes a plurality of light-emitting elements disposed along its length, each having two electrodes between which are applied electrical signals to cause the light-emitting element to emit light to display a pixel or sub-pixel of the image and/or information. The light-emitting fiber includes an electrical conductor disposed along its length to serve as a first electrode, a layer of light-emissive material disposed thereon, and a plurality of electrical contacts disposed on the light-emissive material to serve as the second electrodes of the light-emitting elements. Preferably, the conductors, light-emissive layer and plurality of electrical contacts are formed in a continuous process wherein a transparent fiber passes through a plurality of processing chambers for receiving the electrical conductor, the light-emissive layer and the plurality of electrical contacts thereon.

Light-emitting fiber, as for a display

An inexpensive, robust plasma discharge emitter that repeatably creates a patterned charge on a substrate. To facilitate highly accurate charge deposition, each emitter contains a plasma well for confining the plasma within the emitter. Additionally, a plurality of emitters are arranged in an array to provide a practical charge patterning device. Furthermore, to fabricate an emitter or an array of emitters, a relatively low-cost, repeatable method of fabrication is used that relies upon conventional integrated circuit fabrication techniques.

A method of etching an opening having tapered wall in a layer of silicon carbide (SiC) includes forming a layer of a resist on the SiC layer. An opening having tapered wall is formed in the resist layer so as to expose a portion of the SiC layer. The exposed portion of the SiC layer is then exposed to a plasma of a gas containing carbon and fluorine to etch an opening through the SiC layer with the opening having tapered walls. If a layer of a glass is provided under the SiC layer, the plasma will also etch through the glass layer to provide an opening in the glass layer having tapered walls.
