Methods and compositions are provided for inhibiting the polymerization of a vinyl aromatic monomer, such as styrene monomer, during elevated temperature processing thereof or during storage or shipment of polymer containing product. The compositions comprise a combination of a quinone methide derivative A) and a phenol compound B). The methods comprise adding from about 1-10,000 ppm of the combination to the monomer containing medium, per one million parts of the monomer.

Methods and compositions for inhibiting vinyl aromatic monomer polymerization

Composition and method of use for tannin based environmentally benign polymeric coagulants are disclosed. Tannin based coagulants are copolymers of naturally occurring tannins and a cationic monomer. One embodiment of the present invention provides for a composition, of a tannin based polymeric coagulant which is comprised of N,N-(dimethylaminoethyl) methacrylate (MADAME) polymerized using t-butylhydroperoxide and sodium metabisulfite. The resulting polyMADAME is converted to hydrochloride and then blended/reacted in an aqueous medium with tannin to obtain a homogenous poly(MADAME)-tannin composition. The method of use comprises adding an amount of the composition effective for the purpose of clarifying oily wastewater from food and beverage, steel, automotive, transportation, refinery, pharmaceutical, metals, paper and pulp, chemical processing and hydrocarbon processing industries.

Tannin based polymeric coagulants composition and method of use

Disclosed herein is a method for producing a 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine. The method comprises forming a reaction mixture comprising at least one substituted or unsubstituted phenolphthalein compound, at least one substituted or unsubstituted primary hydrocarbyl amine, and an acid catalyst; and heating the reaction mixture to form 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine. An adduct of the 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine is formed either by using an excess of the primary hydrocarbyl amine in the first heating step, or by isolating crude 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine after the heating step and then reacting with a further amount of the primary hydrocarbyl amine. The 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine has a formula: where Ris selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen and a hydrocarbyl group, and Ris selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen, a hydrocarbyl group, and a halogen.

Methods for producing and purifying 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine monomers and polycarbonates derived therefrom

A composition comprising a polycarbonate, wherein the polycarbonate has a weight average molecular weight of greater than 15,000, comprises more than 15 mole percent structural units derived from a 2-aryl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimide:

The 2-aryl-3-(aminoaryl)-3-(hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine compounds are useful for preparing other useful monomers and polymers.

2-aryl-3-(aminoaryl)-3-(hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine compounds and methods for making them

Disclosed herein is a method for producing a 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine. The method comprises forming a reaction mixture comprising at least one substituted or unsubstituted phenolphthalein, at least one substituted or unsubstituted primary hydrocarbyl amine, and an acid catalyst; and heating the reaction mixture to a temperature of less than 180&#xb0; C. to remove a distillate comprising water and form a crude 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine product; where the 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine has a formula: where Ris selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen and a hydrocarbyl group, and Ris selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen, a hydrocarbyl group, and a halogen.

A process for forming a cycloalkylidene bisphenol comprises: reacting a cycloalkanone compound of formula:where [A] is a substituted or an unsubstituted aromatic group, R&#x2013;Rindependently represent a hydrogen or a C&#x2013;Chydrocarbyl group; and 'a' and 'b' are integers independently having values from 0&#x2013;3; with an aromatic hydroxy compound of formula [A]-OH, where [A] is as previously described; at a mole ratio of greater than or equal to about 20, in the presence of a sulfonic acid type ion exchange resin catalyst crosslinked with greater than or equal to about 8 weight percent of divinylbenzene, and a promoter selected from the group consisting of a mercaptan compound and a resorcinol compound; to form a cycloalkylidene bisphenol of formula:where [A], R&#x2013;R, &#x201c;a&#x201d; and &#x201c;b&#x201d; are as previously described. Moreover, any acid catalyst can be used with a resorcinol promoter.
