Caller name is authenticated using authentication certificates issued by a registration authority that registers callers who wish to terminate calls to callers subscribed to the registration authority. In one embodiment, the authentication certificates are sent to a called device or a proxy for the called device via a path that is separate from the call setup path. An indication is conveyed to the called party to indicate whether the caller name was successfully authenticated.

A system and method are provided for management of access security by user and device. A security policy enforcement point is provided with a user policy module to receive user credentials from an access device of the user and a point for setting device dependent security policy to receive device credentials from the access device. The user policy and device policy are combined and used in the SPEP to enforce a user and device based security policy.

Mechanism for identifying malicious content, DoS attacks, and illegal IPTV services. By monitoring the characteristics of various control messages being transmitted within a network that services Internet protocol television (IPTV) content to identify suspicious behavior (e.g., such as that associated with malicious content, denial of service (DoS) attacks, IPTV service stealing, etc.). In addition to monitoring control messages within such a network, deep packet inspection (DPI) may be performed for individual packets within an IPTV stream to identify malicious content therein (e.g., worms, viruses, etc. actually within the IPTV stream itself). By monitoring control messages and/or actual IPTV content within a network (e.g., vs. at the perimeter of a network only), protection against both outside and inside attacks can be effectuated. This network level basis of operation effectively guards against promulgation of malicious content to other devices within the network.

A mobile IPTV system enables authenticating and off-loading of IPTV operations from a mobile device to an external fixed viewing device. The mobile device performs authentication to an IPTV network to receive decryption key(s) for use in decrypting IPTV content and provides the decryption key to the viewing device. The viewing device uses the decryption key to decrypt and render IPTV content thereon.

Malicious sources within networks are identified using bait traffic, including mobile IP messages, transmitted between a collaborating network device and a collaborating mobile client that has a fixed connection to the network. The bait traffic entices a malicious source to transmit malicious packets towards the collaborating mobile client and/or the network device. Upon receiving a malicious packet, the collaborating mobile client or the network device is able to identify the source of the packet as a malicious source and report the presence of the malicious source within the network.

Malicious clients within a wireless access network are identified using bait traffic transmitted between a collaborating wireless access point and a collaborating client. The bait traffic entices a malicious client to transmit malicious traffic towards the collaborating wireless access point. Upon receiving the malicious traffic, the collaborating wireless access point is able to identify the malicious client and report the presence of the malicious client within the wireless access network.

The policy manager conveys to various policy enforcement points throughout the converged fixed/mobile network the applicable security policies which take into account the user's identity and the access technology being used.

A method for defending against MAC table overflow attacks comprises a plurality of operations. An operation is performed for determining whether each one of a plurality of MAC addresses within a MAC table has one-way traffic or two-way traffic corresponding thereto. Thereafter, operations are performed for designating each MAC address having two-way traffic corresponding thereto as a first category of MAC address and for designating each MAC address having one-way traffic corresponding thereto as a second category of MAC address. In response to the number of the MAC addresses designated as the second category of MAC address exceeding a prescribed threshold value, an operation is performed for causing a timeout value of at least a portion of the MAC addresses designated as the second category of MAC address to be less than a timeout value of the MAC addresses designated as the first category of MAC address.

Facilitating defense against MAC table overflow attacks

A method and apparatus are provided for authenticating a user attempting to establish a service which uses SIP. The user registers with the SIP server by providing the digital otoacoustic signature of the user. Thereafter, when the user attempts to initiate a session through the SIP server, the SIP server sends an Authorization Request message to the SIP client of the user. The SIP client reads the user's digital otoacoustic signature, generates a response based on the digital otoacoustic signature, and embeds the response in a second Invite message sent back to the SIP server. Meanwhile, the SIP server determines an expected response, based on the digital otoacoustic signature registered by the user. If the response provided by the SIP client matches the response expected by the SIP server, the SIP server allows establishment of the server. The invention is of particular use with IP telephony services, since end user devices used with such services are ergonomically well suited for reading of otoacoustic signatures. The invention may also be used to authenticate an intended recipient of an SIP call.

Mechanism for authentication of caller and callee using otoacoustic emissions

Methods for authenticating peer mobile network nodes for establishing a secure peer-to-peer communications context in an ad-hoc network are presented. The methods include accessing wireless infrastructure network entities at low bandwidth and for a short time duration to obtain cryptographic information regarding a peer mobile network node for the purpose of establishing secure peer-to-peer communications therewith ad-hoc network. Having received cryptographic information regarding a peer mobile network node, the method further includes challenging the peer network node with a challenge phrase derived from the cryptographic information received, receiving a response, and establishing a secure communications context to the peer mobile network node based on the validity of the received response. Advantages are derived from addressing security threats encountered in provisioning ad-hoc networking, by leveraging wireless infrastructure network security architecture, exemplary deployed in UMTS/GSM infrastructure networks, enabling seamless mobile network node authentication through the existing UMTS and/or GSM authentication infrastructure, while pervasively communicating with peer mobile network nodes in an ad-hoc network.

Method of authenticating a mobile network node in establishing a peer-to-peer secure context between a pair of communicating mobile network nodes

Mechanisms and methods for providing a mobile/wireless device with protection against false access-point/base-station attacks using MAC address protection are presented. The mobile/wireless device known as mobile client (MC) gains access to wireless network by discovering and selectively associating with an access point (AP). The MAC addresses of both the AP and the MC are protected during all communications between the AP and MC during the discovery phase. This protection mitigates MAC address spoofing type attacks on both the AP and the MC.

Protection for wireless devices against false access-point attacks

Methods and systems for secure communications are provided. Secure end-to-end connections are established as separate multiple secure connections, illustratively between a first system and an intermediate system and between a second system and an intermediate system. The multiple secure connections may be bound, by binding Internet Protocol Security Protocol (IPSec) Security Associations (SAs) for the multiple connections, for example, to establish the end-to-end connection. In the event of a change in operating conditions which would normally require the entire secure connection to be re-established, only one of the multiple secure connections which form the end-to-end connection is re-established. Separation of end-to-end connections in this manner may reduce processing resource requirements and latency normally associated with re-establishing secure connections.

Secure communication methods and systems

A method for enabling a mobile node to transmit encrypted data over a path including a wireless link and an untrusted link, while avoiding double encryption on any link. The data on the end-to-end path is encrypted using an application specific security mechanism, or an L2 mechanism is used for encrypting the data on the wireless link as mandated by the wireless standards, and an application specific security mechanism is used for encrypting the data on the untrusted link. By avoiding redundant double encryption, the method of the invention results in optimizing the use of network resources in bandwidth-limited wireless networks and increases the life of the mobile node battery.
