Techniques for carbon sequestration and storage site selection are presented. The techniques include: obtaining range estimations of criteria for potential carbon sequestration and storage sites; selecting random criteria values in respective range estimations; forming a decision matrix from the random criteria values; weighing the decision matrix to obtain representative vectors; scoring at least some the potential carbon sequestration and storage sites according to similarities of respective potential carbon sequestration and storage site representative vectors to a best vector and to a worst vector; ranking the potential carbon sequestration and storage sites according to the scores; repeating the selecting, forming, weighing, scoring, and ranking a plurality of times to obtain a plurality of sets of scores and a plurality of rankings; displaying a visualization of the plurality of rankings; and selecting a carbon sequestration and storage site from among the potential carbon sequestration and storage sites based on the visualization.

A stimulation includes an injection of a volume of fluid into a formation. A method includes obtaining a mechanical earth model of the formation, modeling a hydraulic fracture growth pattern in the formation from a stimulation of the formation, determining an increase in pressure in the formation resulting from the stimulation, and predicting whether a seismic event will occur in the formation based on the increase in pressure.

A method, apparatus, and program product estimate anisotropic properties of an anisotropic formation based at least in part on determinations of a deviation of a wellbore associated with the anisotropic formation and an availability of non-sonic measurement data associated with the anisotropic formation. The determinations are used in the selection of at least one computer-implemented model that in turn may be applied to determine one or more unknown elastic constants for an elastic stiffness matrix.

Workflow for determining stresses and/or mechanical properties in anisotropic formations

A method for modeling hydraulic fractures of a well. The method includes receiving a reservoir model that describes petrophysical properties of a subsurface of the earth near a reservoir. The method then receives one or more mechanical properties of the reservoir and generating a geomechanical model of the reservoir based on the reservoir model and the mechanical properties. After generating the geomechanical model of the reservoir, the method generates a three dimensional (3D) representation of the hydraulic fractures based on the geomechanical model and the reservoir model.
