Body support systems such as mattresses include breathing layers that define internal air flow guides and form part of the structure for pressure redistribution. At least one air flow unit is coupled for fluid communication with the breathing layers so that heat and moisture may be drawn away from an uppermost comfort layer or body-supporting layer, through the breathing layers, and exhausted out of the body support system. Alternatively, air may be directed through permeable portions of the layers of the body support system to the uppermost layer, particularly at the torso supporting region.

Mattress with combination of pressure redistribution and internal air flow guides

An ester polyurethane foam is prepared by reacting a mixture of one or more polyester polyols with one or more isocyanates and one or more silicone surfactants in the presence of a blowing agent, such as water, and other additives, such as catalysts. The cured foam is chemically treated in a caustic solution to form a hydrophilic ester polyurethane foam having a water absorption rate of at least 20 pounds of water per square foot per minute, preferably at least 25 pounds of water per square foot per minute. The foam also has greater water holding capacity and wet strength than cellulose.

Hydrophilic ester polyurethane foams

A hinged flexible polyurethane foam protective packaging element is formed from a flexible polyurethane foam laminated to a polyethylene, polypropylene or urethane film. The flexible polyurethane foam has a density in the range of 0.7 lbs/ft to 2.8 lbs/ft and IFD in the range of 25 lbs to 270 lbs. The film has a thickness from 2 mil to 125 mil. The foam is cut through all or substantially all of its thickness without cutting through a portion of the film. The uncut portion of the film creates a repeatably bendable hinge.

Hinged flexible polyurethane foam protective packaging and shipping element

Polyurethane foams formed under vacuum (below atmospheric pressure) conditions using a specific mixture of polyisocyanate and with a major portion of methylene diisocyanate (MDI) and a specific mixture of polyether and graft polyols exhibit superb static shock cushioning characteristics (energy absorption) as illustrated by drop curves of deceleration versus static load. The foam-forming ingredients are mixed together and foamed under controlled pressures in the range 0.5 to 0.90 bar (absolute), preferably 0.5 to 0.8 bar (absolute). A major portion of the MDI is 4, 4&prime; methylene diisocyanate.

Energy absorbing foams

A mattress including (a) an innerspring, (b) one or more upholstery topper layers including an edge support that is a foam construction with at least two foam layers, and (c) one or more quilt panel layers. The at least two foam layers form the edge support or firming perimeter edge, wherein the first foam layer has ( ) a defined firmness, ( ) a thickness greater at its perimeter, and ( ) a central portion forming a receiving space. The second foam layer has a defined firmness less than the first foam layer and is nestably insertable into the receiving space of the first foam layer. The firming perimeter edge functions to provide a firmer mattress edge without compromising the thickness of the mattress or requiring additional materials or labor during manufacturing.

Synthetic foam pillow

A thermal and acoustic barrier for automotive floor pan carpeting is made by cutting synthetic foam sheet in a continuous process to create a foam surface complementary to the three dimensional shape of the floor pan surface. The cut foam sheet is bonded to the underside of the carpeting and installed with the complementary foam surface facing the floor pan.

Method of making an automotive carpeting with precut conforming foam

A foam mattress pad of adjustable size has an initial predetermined length, width and thickness. The pad is provided with punched areas or holes, preferably in rows or columns forming a guide for cutting or tearing away strips of foam material to decrease the size dimensions of the pad. In a preferred embodiment, the holes are formed in rows or columns in the base of troughs between peaks of a convoluted surface of the mattress pad. The holes in the troughs may be separately punched or cut before or after the foam is convoluted. Preferably, the holes in the troughs are formed as the foam is cut by the band knife blade during one pass between convolute rollers. Longer projecting fingers are applied to some portions of the convolute roller to achieve the holes in the bases of the troughs. The mattress pad so formed may be sold in a large size, such as queen or king, and reduced by the consumer to a desired smaller size, such as twin or full, by tearing or cutting away strips of foam material along the punched area guide.
