An interfabric link between two separate Fibre Channel fabrics so that devices in one fabric can communicate with devices in another fabric without requiring the merger of the two fabrics. The interfabric switch performs a conversion or a translation of device addresses in each fabric so that they are accessible to the other fabric. This translation is preferably done using a private to public loop address translation. In a first embodiment the external ports of the interfabric switch are configured as E_ports. A series of internal ports in each interfabric switch are joined together forming a series of virtual or logical switches. The virtual switches are then interconnected using private loops. The use of the private loop is enabled by the presence of translation logic which converts fabric addresses to loop addresses and back so that loop and fabric devices can communicate. Because each port can do this translation and the private loop addressing does not include domain or area information, the change in addresses between the fabrics is simplified. In a second embodiment the external ports are configured as NL_ports and the connections between the virtual switches are E_ports. Thus the private to public and public to private translations are done at the external ports rather than the internal ports as in the prior embodiment. The virtual switches in the interfabric switch match domains with their external counterparts so that the virtual switches effectively form their own fabric, connected to the other fabrics by the private loops.

An isolation switch blade Fibre Channel switch presents F_ports to form a first Fibre Channel fabric and N_ports to a second Fibre Channel fabric to appear as node devices. The isolation switch blade may be used to connect a plurality of blade servers to a Fibre Channel fabric. Fabric events engendered by the insertion or removal of hot-pluggable devices are handled by the isolation switch blade and 'event storms' on the Fibre Channel fabric are avoided. The isolation switch blade presents the blade servers to the FC fabric as a virtualized N_port.

An Inifiniband (IB) network that incorporates a Fibre Channel (FC) network is disclosed. The IB and FC networks are coupled by a gateway that maps the FC network to a virtual IB network. In generating the virtual IB network, the gateway may provide a virtual IB target for each node port in the FC network, and may further provide a minimum number of virtual IB switches necessary to support the virtual IB targets. The gateway assigns a globally unique identifier (GUID) to each of the virtual IB targets, and may further associate local identifiers (LID) with the virtual IB targets. The gateway preferably emulates subnet management agents (SMA) and general service agents (GSA) of the virtual IB targets when management IB packets are received, and the gateway preferably converts non-management IB packets directed to the virtual IB targets into FC frames directed to the corresponding target FC devices.

Method and apparatus for mapping between a fibre channel network and an infiniband network

A system and method for sending frames between a public device and a private device comprise a phantom device mapping, an address translation, a frame payload translation, and a CRC regeneration. The system and method assign a phantom AL_PA for the public device and establishes a phantom device mapping between the phantom AL_PA and the public device's Port_ID. With the phantom device mapping, the present invention directs all communication between the public device and the private loop device as if the communication were between a phantom device and the private device. Specifically, the system and method comprise a public-to-private address translation in one direction and a private-to-public address translation in the other direction. During the public-to-private address translation process, the source address of the frame is converted to a phantom AL_PA. The public-to-private address translation uses a Port_ID to phantom AL_PA mapping table and finds an entry where the Port_ID matches the source address. The public-to-private address translation replaces the source address of the frame with the phantom AL_PA of the matched entry, and the destination address with the AL_PA only of the destination device. The private-to-public address translation replaces the destination address of the frame with the Port_ID of the matched entry, and the source address with the fabric assigned address of the private device.
