A rotary engine rotor and a method for supplying rotary engine rotors are provided. The rotary engine rotor has a center axis, a rotor body, a plurality of peripheral surfaces, and a plurality of recess members. The rotor body has a central bore that extends along the center axis. The plurality of peripheral surfaces are disposed around an exterior perimeter of the rotor body. Each of the plurality of recess members are disposed in a respective one of the plurality of peripheral surfaces. Each recess member includes an interior cavity open to an exterior of the rotor.

A material property of the monolithic body may change as the pilot chamber structure extends between the exterior surface and the interior surface. The interior surface forms an outer peripheral boundary of the pilot chamber. The pilot chamber is internal to the pilot chamber structure. The pilot aperture projects into the pilot chamber structure to the pilot chamber. The fuel aperture projects into the pilot chamber structure to the pilot chamber. The ignitor aperture projects into the pilot chamber structure to the pilot chamber.

A rotary internal combustion engine includes a main rotor housing that has a peripheral wall that circumscribes a rotor cavity, a first interface surface and a second interface surface. A rotor is disposed within the rotor cavity. First and second side housings are secured against corresponding first and interface surfaces of the main rotor housing. The main rotor housing, the first side housing and the second side housing are formed from an aluminum alloy and at least one of the first interface surface and the second interface surface include an anti-fretting coating.

During a manufacturing method, a protective coating is applied to a first chamber surface of a first component to provide a coated first chamber surface. The protective coating is applied to a second chamber surface of a second component to provide a coated second chamber surface. The second component is configured with the first component to provide a pilot chamber structure. The pilot chamber structure includes a pilot chamber, a pilot aperture, a fuel aperture and an ignitor aperture. The pilot chamber is formed by the coated first chamber surface and the coated second chamber surface within the pilot chamber structure. The pilot aperture projects into the first component from a distal end of the pilot chamber structure to the pilot chamber. The fuel aperture projects into the pilot chamber structure to the pilot chamber. The ignitor aperture projects into the pilot chamber structure to the pilot chamber.

A side housing for a rotary internal combustion engine, has: a side wall defining first threads, the first threads extending around a central axis; a side plate having a rotor-engaging side facing away from the side wall and a back side opposite the rotor-engaging side and facing the side wall; and a nut rotatable relative to the side plate about the central axis, the nut and the side plate axially locked to one another, the nut defining second threads extending around the central axis, the side plate secured to the side wall via a threading engagement between the first threads of the side wall and the second threads of the nut.

A side housing for a rotary internal combustion engine, has: a side wall; a side plate having a rotor-engaging side facing away from the side wall and a back side opposite the rotor-engaging side and facing the side wall, the side plate defining first threads located on the back side, the first threads extending circumferentially around a central axis of the side plate; and a nut rotatable relative to the side wall about the central axis of the side plate and axially locked to the side wall relative to the central axis, the side plate secured to the side wall via a threaded engagement between the first threads of the side plate and second threads defined by the nut.

A process for joining two or more powder injection molded parts by preparing at least two green parts from a feedstock including a binder and an injection powder.
