A gating large area hybrid photomultiplier tube that includes an envelope, a photocathode for emitting electrons in correspondence with incident light entering the envelope, a collecting anode having a semiconductor device which has an electron incident surface for receiving photoelectrons emitted from the photocathode, a gating grid for gating the photoelectrons emitted from the photocathode, an electron optical system for focusing and directing the photoelectrons generated by the photocathode toward the electron incident surface, and an ion target for collecting positive ions from the photoelectrons. The envelope has a first opening and a second opening; the photocathode is disposed at the first opening, while the collecting anode is disposed at the second opening of the envelope.

A large area hybrid photomultiplier tube that includes a photocathode for emitting photoelectrons in correspondence with incident light, a semiconductor device having an electron incident surface for receiving photoelectrons from the photocathode, and a cone shaped container. Large area hybrid photomultiplier tube

A system and method for viewing objects at a fire scene allows fire fighters to view objects, including persons, in a smoke and fire filled environment. The present invention utilizes two different techniques to discriminate reflections from an object from scattered reflections from smoke and fire. In one embodiment of the invention, the coherent nature of laser light is employed to pick out objects. Another embodiment of the invention utilizes a time-gated approach to select reflections from objects which are located a specific distance from the laser transmitter.

System for viewing objects at a fire scene and method of use

A hybrid lidar-radar system for detecting the presence of objects, such as cancerous tumors, within tissues by detecting reflected signals from the tissue and discriminating the information related to the cancerous tumor from the undesirable backscattering of light created by the tissue itself. The hybrid lidar-radar system utilizes continuous wave light that is preferably modulated at frequencies up to 60 GHz. The present invention filters the return signals from the tissue at a subcarrier modulation frequency so as to reject erroneous information contained in scattered lights, while at the same time retaining the coherent, unscattered and modulated light information so as to provide for an accuracy detection of tumors within tissues.

Hybrid lidar-radar for medical diagnostics

A chirp signal source includes first and second lasers formed on a solid-state chip or substrate. Each of the lasers has a resonator or cavity which incorporates or includes electrooptic material which changes refractive index in response to an electric field. The lasers are pumped, and the resulting laser beams are coupled to a light-to-electric converter which combines the light beams to generate an electrical difference frequency. The change in refractive index allows the lasers to be swept or chin,ed at a much higher rate than thermal or piezoelectrically operated lasers. This structure has the advantages of tending to reduce temperature effects on the difference frequency. It has the further advantage of a high sweep rate, which can be used to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. A radar or lidar ranging system according to an aspect of the invention uses multiple solid-state lasers, which are thermally coupled together.

A modulated LIDAR system is disclosed, in which a laser for generating an tical carrier signal and a microwave generator for generating a coded microwave signal are provided. A modulator is further provided for modulating the carrier signal with the microwave signal, whereby a modulated signal is generated. A method of detecting a reflective surface is also disclosed, in which an optical carrier signal is generated, the carrier signal is modulated with a coded microwave signal, the modulated signal is reflected off of a reflective surface and the reflected signal is recovered.

Modulator LIDAR system

An actively pumped optical filter includes a vapor cell having a population of electrons with the plurality of energy levels which receives light and transmits light according to a pumping mechanism. A magnetic source is provided for applying a magnetic field to the vapor cell. A first pulsed dye laser applies a first beam of light to the vapor cell causing transitions of the electrons from a first energy level to a second energy level. A second pulsed dye laser is used for measuring the transmission through the vapor cell. A third laser applies a beam of light to the first laser and a beam of light to the second laser. The third laser may be an Nd:YAG laser. Polarizers are disposed before and after the vapor cell and a delay path is provided for delaying the second beam of light before the second beam of light is applied to the laser cell. The delay path is tuned by adjusting the length.
