A battery charger has a particularly advantageous application in the field of mobile radio terminal batteries. The charger generates an output voltage and an output current for charging a battery and includes a first regulator, a second regulator for regulating the output voltage to a predetermined value, a detector for detecting the output current, and an activation system which assumes at least two states.
