Parallax in an optical device is reduced by apply one or a combination of several disclosed techniques, including reduced solid angle or increased collimation of light sources, increased diffusion/scattering at an output of the device, and/or reflective structures for collimation and containment of reflected light. The techniques are advantageously applied to a backlight LCD display, and particularly to high dynamic range dual modulation displays.

Parallax reduction

Displays comprise light control layers () in an optical path between a light source (), such as an array of light emitting diodes and a spatial light modulator () such as a liquid crystal display panel. The light control layer comprises an enhanced specular reflector (ESR,) film in optical contact to at least one layer of a transparent or translucent material (B,C). The light control layer transmits light from the light source more readily than the ESR film standing on its own. In some embodiments the display may provide enhanced contrast and peak luminance.

Displays with a backlight incorporating reflecting layer

A display including an image-generating panel and at least one contrast-enhancing panel, a cross BEF collimator between a backlight and one of the panels, and a polarization-preserving diffuser (e.g., holographic diffuser) between the panels. Typically, the contrast panel is upstream of the image panel, and a reflective polarizer is positioned between the cross BEF collimator or and contrast panel, with the reflective polarizer oriented relative to an initial polarizer of the contrast panel. Polarization of light transmitted by the reflective polarizer matches that transmitted by the initial polarizer. Collimated light propagating from the cross BEF collimator toward the contrast-enhancing panel is given a polarization bias by the reflective polarizer, which reflects incorrectly polarized light back toward the cross BEF collimator. Alternatively, the reflective polarizer may be positioned between the cross BEF collimator and the image-generating panel when the image-generating panel is upstream of the contrast-enhancing panel.

Chromaticity of light output by a light-emitting diode, such as a light-emitting diode (LED), is adjusted while maintaining a brightness of the illumination source substantially constant by adjusting a drive schema for the illumination source. A driver for LEDs or other light-emitting diodes provides for varying a drive schema to adjust chromaticity of driven LEDs.

Chromaticity control for solid-state illumination sources

A display comprises a backlight comprising a plurality of individually-controllable light emitters, a light modulator comprising a plurality of individually-controllable elements, and, a retro-reflective optical layer positioned between the backlight and the light modulator. The retro-reflective optical layer is configured to pass light incident thereon at an angle with respect to a normal to the retro-reflective optical layer of less than a threshold angle &#x3c6;, and reflect light incident thereon at an angle with respect to a normal to the retro-reflective optical layer of greater than &#x3c6; in a direction opposite and generally parallel to an incoming direction of incident light.

Retroreflective optical collimation layer and display devices incorporating same

An ultra bright, low wattage inductively coupled electrodeless aperture lamp is powered by a solid state RF source in the range of several tens to several hundreds of watts at various frequencies in the range of 400 to 900 MHz. Numerous novel lamp circuits and components are disclosed including a wedding ring shaped coil having one axial and one radial lead, a high accuracy capacitor stack, a high thermal conductivity aperture cup and various other aperture bulb configurations, a coaxial capacitor arrangement, and an integrated coil and capacitor assembly. Numerous novel RF circuits are also disclosed including a high power oscillator circuit with reduced complexity resonant pole configuration, parallel RF power FET transistors with soft gate switching, a continuously variable frequency tuning circuit, a six port directional coupler, an impedance switching RF source, and an RF source with controlled frequency-load characteristics. Numerous novel RF control methods are disclosed including controlled adjustment of the operating frequency to find a resonant frequency and reduce reflected RF power, controlled switching of an impedance switched lamp system, active power control and active gate bias control.
