A turbocharger assembly is provided which prevents liquid moisturefrom damaging an air fuel ratio sensor affixed to the exhaust pipe. The turbocharger assembly includes a turbine housing, a turbine wheel, a volute defined in the turbine housing, and an upwardly extending exhaust pipe. The turbine housing may be affixed to a center turbocharger housing member. The turbine housing includes an anterior region and a posterior region having the volute. The turbine wheel may be disposed in the turbine housing. A liquid moisturepathway may be defined in the turbine housing and is configured to provide liquid fluid communication from the anterior region toward the volute.

Turbocharger assembly

An exhaust manifold for a vehicle engine may include a plurality of pipes, a pod, a splined collector and a downpipe. Each pipe in the plurality of pipes are operatively configured to be coupled to a corresponding engine chamber at a proximate portion. The pod is operatively configured to align a flow of exhaust gas emerging from each of the corresponding engine chambers to the associated pipe in the plurality of pipes. The splined collector receives the outlet ends of the pipes at a splined collector inlet. The downpipe may be affixed to the splined collector at a small diameter outlet portion. The downpipe includes a first oxygen sensor operatively configured to communicate with a second oxygen sensor disposed in a downstream catalytic converter and an ECM in order to regulate air and fuel for the vehicle engine.

A method for diagnosing an Oxidation Catalyst (OC) device of an exhaust gas treatment system is provided. The method monitors a differential temperature across the OC device. The method determines whether the differential temperature reveals a temperature spike. The method determines that the OC device operates properly in response to determining that the differential temperature reveals a temperature spike.

Diagnosing oxidation catalyst device with hydrocarbon storage

A diagnostic module for diagnosing a particulate matter sensor in a vehicle includes a sensor mode selection module, a heater power detector, and a protection tube diagnostic module. The sensor mode selection module selects a regeneration mode for the particulate matter sensor from among a plurality of operation modes. The regeneration mode regenerates the particulate matter sensor. The heater power detector determines a voltage output based on a voltage applied to the particulate matter sensor. The voltage output corresponds to operation of the particulate matter sensor in the selected mode. The protection tube diagnostic module performs a diagnostic of the particulate matter sensor. The protection tube diagnostic module selectively diagnoses a fault in the particulate matter sensor based on the voltage output determined during the regeneration mode and a regeneration power threshold.

Particulate matter sensor diagnostic system and method

A monitoring system for a single can oxidation catalyst (OC)/particulate filter (PF) member includes a controller including a first temperature sensor input configured to receive a first exhaust temperature upstream of an OC portion of the single can OC/PF member, a second temperature sensor input configured to receive a second exhaust temperature downstream of the first temperature. The controller is configured and disposed to calculate an exothermic capacity of the OC portion and determine washcoat deterioration of a PF portion of the single can OC/PF member based on the exothermic capacity of the OC portion.

Monitoring system for a single can oxidation catalyst/particulate filter

A method is disclosed for controlling a diesel engine equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF). The method includes detecting steady state operation of the engine generating a first flow rate of particulate matter (PM) directed into the DPF. The method also includes, during the steady state operation, triggering exhaust gas recirculation to the engine and thereby directing a second PM flow rate that is greater than the first flow rate into the DPF. The method additionally includes detecting a PM flow rate exiting the DPF in response to the second PM flow rate directed into the DPF. The method also includes comparing the detected PM flow rate exiting the DPF with a PM flow rate threshold. Furthermore, the method includes regulating injection of fuel to regenerate the DPF, if the detected PM flow rate exiting the DPF is greater than the PM flow rate threshold.

Engine control for diesel particulate filter efficiency assessment

An internal combustion engine control system including an internal combustion engine including at least one cylinder configured to perform combustion of an air/fuel mixture therein during a drive cycle. An electronic engine control module is configured to selectively execute at least one soot-based diagnostic operation that diagnoses the internal combustion engine based on exhausted soot. An electronic diagnostic evaluation module is in electrical communication with the engine control module and is configured to disable the at least one soot-based diagnostic operation based on at least one transient drive event of the internal combustion engine during the drive cycle.

An exhaust gas treatment system to treat exhaust gas includes a particulate filter, a second temperature sensor and a control module. The particulate filter includes a PF substrate configured to trap particulate matter contained in the exhaust gas. The second temperature sensor is configured to output an outlet temperature signal indicating an outlet temperature at the outlet of the particulate filter. The control module is in electrical communication with the second temperature sensor to receive the outlet temperature signal. The control module determines a maximum substrate temperature of the PF substrate based on the outlet temperature. The control module is further configured to determine whether the particulate filter includes an active washcoat disposed thereon based on the maximum substrate temperature.

Particulate filter washcoat diagnosis based on exothermic substrate temperature

A method is disclosed for regulating an exhaust after-treatment (AT) system having a diesel particulate filter (DPF) in fluid communication with a diesel engine. The method includes detecting operation of the diesel engine during which the engine generates a flow rate of particulate matter (PM) directed into the DPF. The method also includes detecting a flow rate of PM exiting the DPF in response to the flow rate of PM directed into the DPF. The method additionally includes tracking the detected flow rate alongside a predicted PM flow rate for monitoring and comparison thereof. The method also includes pausing in time the tracking of the predicted flow rate, if the detected flow rate has experienced a decline. Furthermore, the method includes resuming tracking the predicted flow rate when the detected flow rate returns to a value before the decline and using such value to regulate operation of the AT system.

Regulation of a diesel exhaust after-treatment system

A method for determining an over-temperature condition in an exhaust gas treatment system is provided. The method compares a current soot load in a particulate filter with a threshold soot load. The method compares each of a plurality of temperatures sensed by a plurality of temperature sensors with a threshold temperature. Based on determining that the current soot load in a particulate filter of the exhaust gas treatment system exceeds a threshold soot load and that one of the plurality of temperatures exceeds the threshold temperature, the method determines that the exhaust gas treatment system is in an over-temperature condition. Based on determining that the current soot load in the particular filter does not exceed the threshold soot load and that two or more of the plurality of temperatures exceed the threshold temperature, the method determines that the exhaust gas treatment system is in an over-temperature condition.

Detecting over-temperature in exhaust system

An exhaust treatment system includes a particulate filter having a filter substrate configured to trap soot contained in exhaust gas. A regeneration system is configured to perform a regeneration operation that regenerates the particulate filter by burning away soot stored in the filter substrate. A control module is in electrical communication with the regeneration system to generate a first control signal that initiates the regeneration operation based on a comparison between at least one operating condition of the exhaust treatment system and a threshold value. The control module generates a second control signal in response to detecting at least one diagnostic signal. The second control signal initiates the regeneration operation independently of the comparison.

A method of detecting a thermal event is provided that relies not only on monitored exhaust temperatures, but also on temperature gradients propagating in the direction of exhaust flow. Specifically, the method of detecting a thermal event in a vehicle exhaust system includes monitoring at least one operating parameter at multiple locations spaced in exhaust flow of the vehicle exhaust system. The method then includes initiating a protective action if the monitoring indicates that at least one respective predetermined temperature requirement and a respective predetermined temperature gradient requirement are exceeded at two of the multiple temperature sensor locations within a predetermined time period.

Method of detecting a thermal event in an exhaust system based on temperature gradients and exhaust system configured for same

An exhaust treatment system to treat exhaust gas includes a particulate filter configured to trap soot contained in the exhaust gas, and a pressure sensor that outputs a pressure signal indicative of a pressure differential of the particulate filter. A soot mass module is configured to determine a soot mass indicative of an amount of soot stored in the particulate filter based on the pressure differential. The soot mass is selectively determined according to a first soot model or a second soot model. An adaptation soot load module corrects the first soot model based on the second soot model such that the first soot model is adapted to the second soot model. A frequency regeneration module determines an actual rate at which the first soot model is corrected. The frequency regeneration module further determines the particulate filter is excessively regenerated based on the actual rate and a threshold.

System to monitor regeneration frequency of particulate filter

A method of determining aging of a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) in an engine exhaust system includes receiving a first sensor signal from a first nitrogen oxides (NOx) sensor positioned in exhaust flow upstream of the DOC. The first sensor signal is indicative of an amount of NOx in the exhaust flow upstream of the DOC. The method further includes receiving a second sensor signal from a second NOx sensor positioned in exhaust flow downstream of the DOC. The second sensor signal is indicative of an amount of NOx downstream of the DOC. A difference between the first sensor signal and the second sensor signal is calculated via a controller. A DOC aging level based on a predetermined correlation between the difference and DOC aging is then determined by the controller.

An exhaust gas treatment system includes a particulate filter to collect particulate matter from exhaust gas flowing therethrough. A regeneration module performs a regeneration operation that regenerates the particular filter. The regeneration operation generates an exothermic event which heats the particulate filter above a target temperature that burns the particulate matter. At least one temperature sensor is disposed adjacent the particular filter to determine at least one temperature of the exhaust gas. The exhaust gas treatment system further includes a temperature diagnostic module to determine a temperature profile of the particulate filter based on the temperature of the exhaust gas. The temperature diagnostic module further determines a temperature deviation of the particulate filter based on a comparison between the temperature profile and a target temperature. The temperature diagnostic module diagnoses the regeneration operation based on a plurality of temperature deviations and a selected time period.
